Bug fixes
Fixed percentage values showing as an empty box for players whose system language is set to French, Arabic, Persian, Norwegian or one of several others. Shop discounts, the Hard Mode tooltip and the settings sliders all read correctly now, whatever language your machine is set to.
Fixed the Town Hall's final upgrade being impossible to afford. Only four Cheese Wheels existed in the entire game against its cost of five, so no amount of dungeon-crawling could ever max it out. Market Crash in Chapter 3 now awards the fifth. If you'd already cleared Market Crash, your save receives the missing wheel the next time you load it.

Reduced the Wall Crusher's cooldown from 8 seconds to 7 seconds, with its final upgrade tier rebalanced to match.
Gameplay
Hard Mode now unlocks after completing the Prologue. New players get a smoother introduction before taking it on, since finishing the Prologue opens up a lot more of Heroes Suck at once, Hard Mode included. The toggle stays visible with a tooltip explaining why until then.
Bug fixes
Fixed area powers like Aero Blast hitting a smaller radius than their cast circle showed. Heroes standing near the edge of the displayed radius could dodge the effect even though they looked like they were inside it. The hit area now matches the circle you see on the ground.

A small hotfix for a couple of Wall Crusher issues found right after launch.
Bug fixes
Fixed a Wall Crusher on the edge of the dungeon preventing stages from starting. A Wall Crusher pushing toward an outer row or column made the Battle button do nothing for both story and challenge stages. Stages now start normally, and those Wall Crushers work as usual.
Fixed the Wall Crusher's wall passing straight through heroes. Heroes caught by a Wall Crusher now take damage and get knocked back as intended.

A quick update ahead of the September 15th launch. No new content this time, just some fixes and an audio pass.
Bug fixes
Fixed several town NPCs slowly drifting from their spot during long play sessions. Kaelviir, Remi, Hilda, Logan, and Mayor Perceval could inch away from where they belong the longer you stayed in the world. They now stay put.
Fixed the town interface sometimes disappearing after leaving a building. Exiting somewhere like the Storehouse right after entering could rarely leave the town UI gone.
Raised the character limit on the in-game feedback form from 1,000 to 2,000. Room for longer bug reports and suggestions.
Content
Renamed the Chapter 4 stages.
Audio
Added hover sounds to: traps, ability selection, and town building buttons.
Added dedicated sounds for entering the Shop, Scriptorium, Town Hall, and Storehouse. Each building now has its own sound instead of a generic one.
The Mastery window now plays its own distinct sound when opened, instead of the generic sound.
Made several rounds of audio mixing adjustments across sound effects and music.

Thanks for playing the demo and the beta! The full game launches on Steam on September 15th at 11:00 AM ET. Chapters 3 and 4, the ending, and the rest of the campaign are all on the way. Your existing demo and beta saves carry over, so nothing you've built gets left behind. In the meantime, here's everything that's changed since the last demo build.
New in the full release
Steam Achievements. 35 of them, covering traps, town buildings, mastery trees, combat and more. Most unlock right away based on your existing save. Lifetime kill-count achievements are the exception, since that wasn't tracked before now, so those start counting from today.
Steam Cloud saves. Your saves now sync automatically, so you can pick up on another PC where you left off.
New splash screen.
Traps
Flame Jet's burn now scales with the trap. It used to stay flat no matter how much you upgraded or forged the trap, so it fell behind the further you progressed. Now it's a share of Flame Jet's own damage and keeps pace at every grade and forge level. A new upgrade line pushes that share even higher.
Overlapping Flame Jets now stack their burn duration instead of resetting each other's timer.
Loot
Fixed Glorious Chests paying out the same loot as Grand Chests. The rarest chest tier now actually outshines the one below it.
Opening a Glorious Chest now has its own sound effect.
Quality of life
New inventory hotkey. Press I to open your inventory without hunting for the button, or rebind it in Settings.
New screenshot hotkey. Press H to hide the UI for a clean shot of your dungeon, also rebindable in Settings.
Trap unlock cards now show stats on hover, before you commit.
Credits now scroll on their own and include some additional attributions.
Bug fixes
Fixed some older mastery nodes being purchasable before you'd reached their intended dungeon level.
Fixed trap upgrades quietly losing sell value when you took an upgrade-cost mastery. Taking one now refunds the difference.
Fixed gold popups appearing in the wrong corner of the screen when an enemy died off-camera.
Minor performance cleanup on the main menu screen.
Clarified a confusing line in the Powers guide.
Dialogue
Added over 50 new hero barks for entering a stage and dying.

Two months of work since the last demo build. Most of it went into the save system, plus a round of performance work aimed at the later-game waves, preparing for release, and a handful of real balance changes.

The beta is open
The closed beta is live as of today, August 11, and runs through August 25. It covers the Prologue through Chapter 2 and is distributed through Steam Playtest. Chapters 3 and 4 are being built separately and aren't part of it.
The first wave of invites has gone out to creators, press, and newsletter subscribers, and there's still room. I'll be sending more batches before the window closes. If you want in, join the newsletter at dawninglight.gg/newsletter and you'll be in the pool for the next one.
Balance
Aero Blast hits dramatically harder. Its damage was well below where it needed to be, so rank I now deals 60 damage, up from 15.
Hidden Spears' knockback doubled. Spears now actually shove things once fortitude is broken.
Hidden Spears' sixth Base Damage upgrade now requires a higher trap grade. It was purchasable out of order, skipping ahead of the ranks meant to come before it.
Saves
Older saves load and upgrade automatically, so your demo progress carries forward.
Automatic rotating backups. If your save is damaged, the game falls back to the newest healthy backup instead of failing.
Fixed the game hanging on the Load screen when a save file had been cut short mid-write.
Damaged saves now tell you what was lost and load the rest, instead of erroring out or, worse, breaking later mid-run.
Bug fixes
Fixed enemies getting permanently stuck on the field at 0 HP. An Arrow Rain bolt hitting an enemy that was already dying could break every despawn that followed for the rest of the session.
Fixed gold being spent without the tile being placed. This traced back to a startup crash on unusual window sizes, which also stopped the analytics consent prompt from ever appearing.
Fixed a trap cooldown icon staying stuck on screen when the Guild Master's Trap Blast landed after you'd already lost the stage.
Fixed aura effects lingering on the field forever after their owner died or the ability was recast.
Camera fixes. Pan, rotate and zoom no longer stick when a gesture gets interrupted, and camera collision against terrain and buildings has been reworked.
Damage numbers now scale against your own output. Popup size didn't vary with hit size and ballooned as you zoomed in. A big hit now reads as a big hit whether you're in the prologue or chapter 4.
Holding Alt to preview a mastery node's maxed values now keeps working as you move between nodes.
Performance
Aimed at the Chapter 4 stages, where the enemy count climbs well beyond one-hundred.
Enemy ragdolls rebuilt on a lighter rig, and their physics now only recalculates when something has actually changed.
Damage-number popups are pooled and pre-warmed. Crit numbers weren't pooled at all, and the rest grew mid-fight, a measurable source of hitching during big waves.
Audio
New Kaelviir dialogue in Embervale. Fresh welcome, trap-building and respawn lines.

Introduced a new font for text-heavy areas of the game to improve readability.
Redesigned the pause menu to improve functionality and allow movement around the map.
Story replay - view story cutscenes again from the 'Defend' menu.
New 'potential loot' UI element - this shows all the possible loot that can be dropped from each stage.
Made the dungeon entrance more spacious and freed up 2 more tiles for dungeon building.
The physics system has undergone heavy optimizations, more than doubling FPS in some situations.
Updated various icon visuals.
Lighting tweaks and improvements.
Some music tracks have been improved.
Bug fixes
Various save data issues resolved. Particularly saving and loading files in the same session was causing some data to initialize improperly.
More Kaelviir dialogue interjection subtitle mismatches have been fixed.

Replay button has been re-added.
Inventory UI - this shows all the lovely loot you've collected in one single interface.

Clamped cutscene UI to a 1080p resolution width so those of you with ultra wide monitors can have a better experience.
When you're progressing through story and challenge stages, it will now automatically select the next stage for you.
Ability damage will now display separately from trap damage.
Save files have been completely revamped with a new structure that will crunch the file size even more, and provide a solid framework for future content.

Balancing
Hero health values have received a bit of balancing. Overall, they are slightly less in the demo. This change was mostly targeting beta content.
Gold purchase cost for traps has been removed. This makes early game a bit easier and more fun, in my opinion. It also removes an extra 'invisible' fee on top of building a new tile.
Bug fixes
Fixed a bug not allowing players to play challenge mode stages.
Fixed an issue causing jittery movement on heroes when they die.
Fixed the knockdown effect for Aero Blast.
Fixed a soft lock condition during battle.
Various minor UI bug fixes.

Features

Challenge mode has been crunched down from 10 total stages to 5. This reduces a bit of tedium, and gives it a more challenging difficulty curve.

Loot chest rebalancing. Overall reducing the amount of gold and knowledge, but adding some gears.

Fixed a condition where certain ability slots could no longer be used during battle.

Features

Voice acting! Kaelviir now has voice lines that play as you interact with the game.
Heroes now have a gearing system. As they level up, their gear will improve.
All new music. Experience the new and improved soundtrack.
All new building upgrade system. You can experience this by upgrading the forge. The demo is limited to level 2, but in the full game each building will have 5 levels.
Changes

Skipping cutscenes now shows a summary.
NUMEROUS optimizations. Seriously, a lot of things were done in this regard. There's still a lot more to do. Visit the graphics settings menu if you'd like to tweak the settings to your liking.
Various QoL improvements were added. Including pre-selecting an ability before it comes off cooldown.
Balancing

Removal of damage ranges, now everything deals a flat amount of damage. This means less RNG.
Challenge boss loot chests have been balanced to drop less often, but give more rewards, proportionally.
Bug fixes

Rare soft lock conditions have been squashed.

It's been a while! I've been making new content, and QoL changes. I figured it's time to update the demo. Here's the deal, though. I recently moved, things have been chaotic. I've also transitioned to a new source control, so I lost some history. As such, these patch notes are probably incomplete. I put in as much as I could remember, but I vaguely recall rebalancing quite a few things, especially challenge mode. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the update! Here's what I remember...
Features

New trap: Arrow Rain. This replaces Time Warper. This may only be a temporary change, we'll see. I wanted to give you a new trap to try out!
Defeat rewards! Sounds crazy, I know. Now you'll keep 20% of the gold and experience, and all of the loot dropped upon a defeat.
New Forge UI.
Changes

Mastery expansion and cleanup! I've added a lot of QoL to the mastery trees, and added a whole new one in this update. I'll let you see for yourself. Btw, I also added a hotkey to preview the max level.
Flame Jet now has 2 new attach points.
New descriptions for various items.
Replaced some icons with newer ones. Most notably, "Battle" is now "Defend".
Lightning pylon now attaches to the ceiling.
Traps now show fortitude damage.
Added a new UI element for hero fortitude. (It's the yellow bar under their health.)
Balancing

Added a cooldown to the pendulum axe, which can be removed again with enough upgrades. This trap felt a little too strong early game, but it can scale back up to how it was in the mid game.
Loot chests now have a greatly reduced drop rate, but have rewards increased to compensate. Overall, chests should feel less burdensome and a heck of a lot more rewarding. But there's still RNG, so no guarantees!
Bug fixes

I think I fixed a bug related to stacking traps - but I can't remember anymore. Please let me know if you're still able to stack them.
Fixed discrepancies with the functionality of the "Esc" button. Again, please let me know if you notice anything out of the ordinary.

Fortitude: Heroes now have a fortitude value that must be depleted to knock them down. This value and fortitude damage each trap does will be displayed on the UI in a future update.
Ability tooltips! Hover over an ability to see more information.
Graphics options! A few options have been added to customize the visuals and get a bit more performance on lower end machines. More to come!
Changes

Doubled the physics framerate from 50 to 100. This provides more accurate physics simulations at the cost of a little bit more CPU usage.
Changed navmesh to allow enemies to get closer to the walls. This was initially put in place to have heroes avoid corners a bit more, but with more traps coming it will be less of an issue. This was also causing heroes to teleport around after they regained balance.
Adjusted selection colliders on flame jet and pendulum axe to be a bit smaller.
Balancing

The Pendulum Axe was previously (intentionally) ignoring some collisions if they weren't strong enough, and also ramping damage based on the impact. This logic has been removed, so the pendulum axe should now feel more consistent and powerful.
The settings menu UI/UX has been improved.
Optimizations

Exterior environment has been optimized. Grass shadows have been removed, and meshes have been combined, with the removal of geometry that is not visible.
LOD (Level of detail - essentially varying quality meshes of a particular asset) has been removed on foliage and instead been changed to use different LODs based on the graphical setting. Medium is now the default grass detail setting, since it is the heaviest on performance.
Bug fixes

Fixed a trap trigger bug that would reset the internal delay for activating the trap.
Fixed a soft lock when starting a stage after unlocking powers and having guides disabled.
Fixed a shader issue with certain traps fading out at the wrong angles.
Enemy health bars don't jump around as much when taking damage now.
Fixed a bug that was temporarily allowing two traps to be placed on a tile.
Some environment display issues have been resolved.
Resolved error spam when disabling a trap selection while it is changing position.
What's next?

The Pendulum Axe has been reworked. This trap was the least used trap - for a good reason. It wasn't reliable, and rarely felt like it was hitting when it mattered. It has been overhauled to intentionally strike at enemies as they pass by. Overall, it feels a lot better and more in line with the other traps. I would love to hear your feedback on the changes to this trap.

Fixed text color display issue when you have an amount of gold equal to the required amount.

This patch is focused on completing the core game loop and adding more varied gameplay. The new challenge mode will be the home of the hardest content the game has to offer, but also the most rewarding.
Features

Challenge mode - 5 new challenging stages with randomized waves of enemies. You may even face a new boss in this mode!
Loot chests - earn them by defeating bosses in challenge mode.
Town building: Forge
Trap tier improvements: use Kaelviir's forge to improve traps to tier II.
Changes

Added new resources: Gear, Scroll, Loot Chest.
Removed resources: Stone, Wood. They initially were going to have a use, but the design has changed and they are no longer needed.
Item descriptions now show on the tooltip when hovering over an item on various interfaces.
Trap upgrade cost now shows in red if you don't have enough gold.
Enabled enemy damage when hitting environment while ragdolled.
Improved and optimized hero pathfinding. The game feels a little more challenging now because the heroes are better at avoiding each other.
Balancing

Flame Jet now has a cooldown upgrade at the base tier.
Lightning Pylon starts with 1 less bounce. You can purchase the bounce back as an upgrade. This trap felt a little too powerful, so the extra investment should make it feel more balanced while still allowing it to be just as strong with proper investment.
Greatly reduced drop chance of loot from heroes. From 15% down to 7.5%. The new challenge mode is now the main source of loot.
Reduced level scaling on gold drops.
The gold cost of rank 4 of trap base damage has been slightly reduced on all traps.
Bug fixes

Critical: Resolved an issue where trap upgrade data was lost when loading a save after closing it for the first time. This caused all trap upgrade data to be lost any time you closed the game after the first playthrough. Yikes.
Time Warper now slows by the correct value. Previously it was slowing by 20% instead of the stated 25%.
The cursor can sometimes get stuck in the 'holding' state. One known case was resolved. More edge cases are on the large.

Boss enemies have had their health increased.
Hard mode difficulty and rewards have been doubled. Previously, the challenge wasn't really felt too much. This should make it more apparent.

Guides are now ordered properly when reviewed in the menu.
What's next?
I've been working hard on the new game mode, 'Challenge'. I'm finalizing the new feature now and it should be available in the coming weeks. In this game mode you will face randomized waves of enemies with bosses. It has a greater risk, but also comes with greater reward.
