It's been a very busy couple of weeks, adding numerous new puzzles and maps to RuneSage. The latest release combines these with significant improvements in performance, better graphical and audio effects, and various small tweaks to improve immersion and the flow of the game. The
It's been a very busy couple of weeks, adding numerous new puzzles and maps to RuneSage. The latest release combines these with significant improvements in performance, better graphical and audio effects, and various small tweaks to improve immersion and the flow of the game.

Added new map mechanic.
Added more maps to find.

Added destructable walls.
Added magic effects to treasure chests.
Added sound effect when viewing a map for the first time.

The latest release of RuneSage focuses on improving the in-game mechanics. In particular, it provides a quicker method of casting spells, and more indications of how far through the game you are, but also a number of small tweaks to graphics and audio to help improve the immersion.

Added a quick way of casting spells (just press and release the controller trigger).

In practice, that means making the tutorial area much easier so you progress more quickly onto the main part of the game, and then adding more puzzles and opportunities for spell casting to give a richer, more immersive experience thereafter.

Added more places to use magic spells.
Added more NPCs to give clues to the harder puzzles.
Added more visual clues to the locations of the hidden pathways.
Added requirement to cast a spell to open chests.
Added requirement to grab the map out of a chest.
Added ice puzzles.
Improved behaviour of main menu to default to showing last selected option.
Improved graphics for the earth spells.
Improved audio for ice melting.
Improved audio for chest opening.
Improved layout of the forest mazes.
Improved layout of the hidden sun crystal area.

Fixed bug which could rarely cause the main menu to show no options.
Please note that, although save games are fully backwards compatible, the game mechanics with the treasure chests have changed. Anyone who started playing on V0.19.0 or earlier will find that chests no longer automatically open, and instead you (and anyone starting with V0.20.0 and onwards) now need to cast a spell to open them, and then reach out and grab the maps that lie within.

As well as helping drive the story along, this also significantly improves immersion in the game world as it makes the purpose of collecting the crystals more obvious.

Hot on the heels of adding the fire rune last week, this week I'm delighted to be able to release an update that adds the ice rune to RuneSage as well. That means yet more new areas to explore, more new spells to cast and more new puzzles to solve, pushing the gameplay length up to over 15 hours.

Hidden deep in the ruined castle, it's incredibly exciting to announce that the fire rune has been found in the latest update to RuneSage. If you can find it, the power to cast fireballs, flame-throwers and the brightest of lights to aid your adventuring in the deep will surely be yours. With more puzzles to solve, more quests to complete and more areas to explore, RuneSage now offers 10-12 hours of immersive adventuring in one of VR's longest games.
