When I started working on Verlies: Resurrection, one thing was clear in my mind: I didn't want to simply create a third installment. I wanted to create the game I had always imagined behind the name Verlies.
The first question some people might ask is: Do I need to have played the previous games? The answer is no. Verlies: Resurrection was designed as a fresh start. Returning players will recognize the spirit of the series, but newcomers can dive in without feeling like they're missing part of the story.
Since the very first Verlies, my goal has always been the same: to pay tribute to a style of game that has become increasingly rare. A dungeon crawler where exploration, discovery, and the unknown take center stage. A world that doesn't adapt itself to the player, but instead asks the player to adapt to it.
The first two games embraced this philosophy through extensive procedural generation. Almost everything was randomized: levels, enemies, items, statistics, and loot. Every playthrough told a different story.
With Verlies: Resurrection, I've chosen a radically different approach.
The dungeons remain procedurally generated in order to preserve that feeling of uncertainty when venturing into the depths. But everything surrounding that exploration has been handcrafted. Every location, every character, and every item exists for a reason.
I wanted the world itself to constantly tell a story.
In many games, items are simply rewards. Here, they are often fragments of a larger narrative. A rusted weapon, a forgotten pendant, a half-burned letter, or even a discarded tool can reveal a past event, a personal tragedy, an ancient belief, or the existence of someone you may never actually meet.
Environmental storytelling has become one of the pillars of the project. I love the idea that two players can explore the same area and come away with completely different understandings of what they saw. Some will move forward without paying much attention to the details. Others will spend hours piecing together clues scattered throughout the world in an attempt to understand what truly happened.
The game itself is also far more ambitious than its predecessors.
For the first time in the series, Verlies features a fully developed story, a rich and detailed lore, numerous characters to encounter, and events that go far beyond simply looting dungeons. The world has its own history, its own mysteries, and its own scars.
Yet despite this new depth, I wanted to preserve what has always defined Verlies: the feeling of being alone in a world that is completely indifferent to your existence.
The game doesn't try to explain everything. It doesn't cover the map with quest markers. It won't constantly tell you where to go, what to do, or how to solve every problem.
Some mechanics will need to be discovered. Some secrets will remain hidden from most players. Some locations will only reveal their true nature to those willing to observe carefully and think for themselves.
I want discoveries to feel meaningful because they were earned.
In a world where many games strive to eliminate uncertainty and guide players every step of the way, Verlies: Resurrection embraces the opposite philosophy: trusting the player's intelligence, curiosity, and sense of adventure.
Because at its core, that's what has always fascinated me about the greatest dungeon crawlers.
That feeling of stepping into a hostile place without knowing what awaits beyond the next door.
And sometimes emerging from it with more questions than answers.
