The Philosophy of VERLIES III — You Are Not Welcome

I’d like to talk a little about the philosophy behind the creation of the VERLIES series.

Most games are designed to reward the player. The world is built to let you progress, enemies are obstacles to overcome, and no matter what happens, the game will usually find a way to let you move forward.

VERLIES is deliberately different.

Here, you are not welcome.

The world does not want to help you. The creatures you encounter are not there to provide you with a fun challenge: they are there to kill you.

I know that VERLIES III’s difficulty can be intimidating. But unlike the older VERLIES games, I no longer want difficulty to be unfair. You cannot die simply because a dice roll decided your fate.

The combat system is even designed so that, in theory, a skilled enough player could go through an entire fight without taking a single hit.

But here’s the thing: we are not machines.

Stress, fatigue, pressure, a moment of inattention… all of these things eventually make us make mistakes.

And that is where the real challenge begins.

When faced with an enemy that seems impossible, I want you to eventually find yourself thinking:

“I’m not the one who’s going to die. I will get through this. No matter what.”

You will fail. You will die. You will try again.

Then you will learn.

You will understand the enemies, their attacks, their timings. You will become calmer. More precise. More confident.

Your character grows stronger, but so do you.

I don’t want VERLIES III to be the story of a hero the world was waiting for.

You are an intruder.

An outsider moving through a world that would rather see you dead.

And I want that progression to be as much mental as it is mechanical.

The world does not become easier.

You become capable of surviving it.

I don’t want everyone to finish VERLIES III.

I want those who do to genuinely feel like they accomplished something. Not simply that they finished a story, but that they overcame a trial.

I want you to feel like you entered this hell, left blood, sweat and tears behind...

...and somehow managed to come out alive.

Stronger.
