Exploration Drone & Fog of War

Explore the map and uncover the fog of war with your new Drone! The exploration drone is unlocked by completing objectives. The drone main uses is to find resources outside your starting area. Also, you cannot purchase land tiles that are fully covered by the fog.

The drone has a battery and charges itself with its own solar panels. All you need to do is set waypoints by entering world coordinates.

Improved Crafting

We have completely remade the crafting tool from the ground up! To read more about all the crafting changes, please see the devlog HERE.

Shipping Depot

The Shipping Depot is a new building which you start with which acts as the central place for everything that involves shipping. The Shipping Depot is the new home for Market Orders, Selling items to the market, and completing contracts.

You now get paid out for contracts when the contract is being picked up.

Reward Objectives

The in-game objectives have been remade with new SFX, animations and 13 new objectives to complete. Plus, completing them unlocks tools, money and items as a reward.

Challenges

When starting a game, you now have the option to turn on up to 5 different challenges. These challenges include:

Windy - Wind will never go below 80km/h (49mph)
No Warnings - All warnings are disabled and cannot be enabled.
No Worker Skills - Workers will not be able to increase their skills.
Eco Conscious - Cannot operate Coal Heaters and Coal Generators (you will be given two turbines and a battery at the start of the game)
No Pausing - The pause button is disabled.

Improved Tutorial

The in-game tutorial has been updated to hopefully be less force full and more helpful! There are new short tutorial videos to provide a more visual experience. The skip tutorial option are more obvious and frequent and you are never forced to open a menu because of a tutorial.

Bug Fixes & Other Improvements

Improvements

You can now toggle the visibility of each Warning / Urgent Type
Weekly Targets now only start on Week 2
Additional Loans available in the Payment History Tab
When moving items, you now see outlines and info of where you can insert an item into (for example: inserting an item into Storage or adding Fuel to a Coal Heater)
You will now receive a message at the bottom of the screen which will describe to you the reason you cannot do a certain action. (For example: you cannot craft this item because you are missing this ingredient)
Separated the Bakery into its own building
Manage Food Supply (Limit what workers can consume for plants)
Increase starting area from 10x10 to 12x12
Increased Range and Effectiveness of both Wooden Walls and Wind Diverging Walls
Add Keybinding for the Automation tab
Contracts now display when the next contracts will be available
Keybindings now work when in moving tab
Show keybinding below each tool button
Added separate volume slider for weather SFX
Everyone starts the game with a seed of each plant
Utility Menu now displays the qty remaining of a item (ex: power cable, water pipes)

When a worker dies, you lose contract company reputation
Lowered the time to grow trees in the Automatic Tree Farm (400 to 260)

Welcome to our August 2022 Devlog! Today we'll be discussing some exciting features which will be available in the upcoming major update: Fog of War. The Fog of War update release date will be announced soon, but we are targeting around the end of September / October of 2022.

Complete Crafting Revamp

Yes, the crafting mechanic has been rebuilt from the ground up! No more trying to find where your item has spawned when crafting. Now, you will be able to choose where the crafted item will be placed. There are many other differences which will be discussed below.

Crafting Modes

There are two modes in the Crafting menu: MINE and CRAFT

MINE

The MINING tool is used to convert resources into usable materials. For example, clicking on a tree will turn it into wooden planks. You will also be able to visually see that the interactible tiles will be in green and the tiles which you can’t do anything with will be in red.
As always, large resources can only be mined with a Mining rig.

CRAFT

As you might have guessed, this tool allows you to craft items. First, you need to navigate to the CraftOPedia to ‘equip’ items that you want to craft into your Recipe Hotbar. To craft an item, open the crafting menu, select an item from your recipe hotbar, then click on the space where you want to place it in the world.
You can now see how much of each item in the crafting recipe you currently have available. Also, the crafting tool will automatically use items around the world and in storage for the crafting recipe.

Drilling Down the Crafting Recipe

Instead of equipping all items you need to craft a building in the Recipe Hotbar, you can click on an item within the crafting recipe to bring up its recipe. For example, a FarmHut required a wooden structure to be built. Instead of equipping both items in the Recipe Hotbar, you can simply equip the Farm Hut. Once the FarmHut is selected in the crafting menu, you can craft the wooden structure by clicking on its image.
Once the wooden structure is built, the game will automatically bring you back to the previous recipe (which would be the Farm Hut).

Improvements to CraftOPedia, Again

This should be the final overhaul for the CraftOPedia. We have made an entirely new section where you can view exactly where an item can be made.

Bakery

Bakeries are now their own building. It is no longer part of the FarmHut and Greenhouse. It functions the same as Factories and Assembly Machines.

You can now manage how much of each ingredient is set aside for Bakeries. This prevents workers from consuming it before it can be used to make baked goods.
Farms can now be used with Links (Automation).

Where can I Move Items to?

Quality Of Life - The game now displays where you can insert an item while moving them. For example, when moving Coal, you will see a indicator of 'FUEL' on top of every item that requires Coal for fuel (like Coal Heaters and Coal Generators).

What's Next?

We have a few more features planned for the Fog of War update. Such as introducing 'Rewarding Objectives' which will replace the current outdated Objectives.
We will also introduce Challenges which will add another level of difficulty to the game. More info on these features in the next Devlog

I would like to take this opportunity to talk about what is currently being worked on in Death By FrostByte!
These features and improvements will be available in the next update!

What's New?

Fog Of War

We are currently experimenting with Fog Of War which will hide the entire map except for the starting area. You will be given an "Exploration Drone" which you can use to slowly uncover the map! The drone works by inserting coordinates for it to follow.

The drone will have a light during the night. It will also require time to charge its battery. There will be upgrades available to speed up its exploration time and charge rate.
Also, you can't buy land that is completely hidden. Buying land will clear all partial fog of war on it.

Toggling Specific Warnings

The next update will include some new improvements to the warning system. First, the warning panel at the top left side of the screen has gotten a makeover to match the theme of the other panels.

You will now be able to enable each warning type, or even have the option to toggle the entire warning system On or Off.

These are all the new features so far. However, there will be more new content that will be announced in the next Devlog!

Game Improvements / Quality Of Life

Refining the Utility Tool Menu

- Added a new counter which represents how much of the current utility (for example: Power Cables) is available to place.
- The Underground Lines and Gates button are hidden until they are unlocked via research.
- Moved the button which opens a panel that list all circuits. This "Overview" button is now much easier to find than before.

In-game Tutorial

- If you accidentally leave the in-game tutorial enabled when starting a new game, you are now greeted with an option to "SKIP ALL" tutorials once you are loaded.
- All tutorials now have the options to be closed.
- Moved the tutorial panels to the bottom left corner of the screen instead of having it in the middle of the screen.
- You are no longer forced to interact with a specific element when going through the in-game tutorial.
- Fixed one tutorial panel which was assuming the player has already built the coal-generator.
- The in-game tutorial is still not completely revised and more improvements are expected to come!

Other Improvements

- The starting area is now 44 tiles larger! It used to be an area of 10x10, now its 12x12.
- You are now guaranteed 2 of each resource type when starting a new game.
- You can now move items while being paused.
- You only get one email a day now for new worker skills. (Before it was one email every time someone obtained a new skill)
- You are now alerted when new contracts are available
- Both the Wooden Walls and Wind Diverging Walls have better range and wind reduction.
- Fixed and issue with the Pinned items displaying an item recipe when starting a new game.

Update Features (v0.15a)

Fahrenheit & MPH

Now you can change the weather measurements to Fahrenheit and MPH in the settings. This is a small addition to the game but will greatly increase your experience if you are accustomed with the imperial measurements. The metric measurements are still the default.

CraftOPedia Redesign

The CraftOPedia has been completely redesigned to give the player more impactful information on each item. You can now see items that are locked by research.

Emails

We have created emails as a way to provide information to the player without it being intrusive. For example, we have removed the Market Recap menu that pops up at the end of the day. Instead, you will receive an email which you can view at any time. You will also receive emails about your workers and other events.

Navigate Through Pinned Crafting Recipes

If you have a complex crafting recipe, instead of pinning each crafting level, you can now navigate up and down each crafting recipe from the crafting tool! This feature was suggested by our steam community!

Events - Phase 1

This update will feature an introduction on game events. You will experience every few days that an item in the Market will have its price skyrocket due to "short supplies".

There will be more events and lore added to the game in the future!

Game Improvements & Balancing

Added about 15 minutes of new music, remastered the existing music tracks
Reduced the item quantity from all contract sizes
Increased the length of most research tasks
Have workers start with less skills, (have max set in one 3)
Workers take longer to earn new skills
Reduced loan payment increase: 2000 > 1000
Reduced cost increase when buying land: 60 > 50
Reduced max cost of land: 40000 > 20000
Saving game now takes much less time
Raised max capacity of a power cable: 16kW > 20kW
Raised max capacity of a heavy duty power cable: 40kW > 50kW
You can now hold the Increase or Decrease amount buttons to speed up the changing number
Expand view around the map borders, you can now have a better view items near the map edge
Allow camera movement (WASD) when in storage transfer
Display max output on Solar Panels
Added more details in the world outside of the playable area
Music track will unique for 8 tracks at a time (used to be 2)
Prioritize the main colony storage unit for random transfers (especially for food items)
Delay the music start when loading into the game

Bug Fixes

Fixed issues with SFX volume (both ingame and in the main menu)
Fixed glitch with inserting coal in another item (Coal Generator) while only having 1kg left
Muted SFX while in the loading game scene
Fixed the land expansion tool glitching out after buying land
Fixed issue where the difficulty would change from its first picked option when loading in a save
Cancel Link Setup when exiting setup
Fixed issue that you could not cancel a link if the placement criteria did not pass
Don't allow items to be deposit into storage unit when frozen
Fixed weekly revenue target showing the wrong amount after loading a save
Fixed issues caused by the UnfreezeCrew
Fixed issue were workers would not get a new item to unfreeze in the Unfreeze Crew
Mining production amount text not automatically updated in Mining Rig
Fixed bug where not all coal operated items get 40kg of coal when crafted
Fixed bug with the shipping container not spawning
Fixed snow buildup on items not saved
Fixed Glitch where sometimes the status bar of the water tank stays when moving the item
Fixed issue with circuit overloading not working properly (items where still receiving power)
Fixed: When building wooden walls with material covered in snow, only one of them is affected by the snow slowdown (both should be affected)
Fixed other issues.

Introduction Cutscene

We are introducing some story elements inside the game for the first time. Each time you start a new game, you will see a 2 minute cut-scene which explains some of the backstory of the game.

We have completely reworked the starting game menus. You can now view your starting 5 employees along with their skillsets. If you are unhappy with your starting workers, you can just randomize them to get new ones!

We will be adding more lore and story into the game in future updates!

Worker Portrait & Skills

The workers have been completely remade from the ground up. The workers now feature portraits, shift management (day shifts / night shifts), Skillsets, adjustable salaries, and more!!!

Portraits: Workers will now have a randomly generated portrait to help the player identify different workers more easily. This also gives us the opportunity to add more clothes types and costumes for future updates!
Skill-sets: Workers will now start with a randomly generated set of skills. There are 5 different skills (Farming, Mining, Machinery, Research and Unfreezing). The higher their skillset is, the faster they will complete tasks. Workers will also earn new skillpoints when working which you will be able to choose which skillset to improve.
Shifts: Each task that require workers will need staff for both Day Shifts and Night Shifts. This will force you to expand your workforce much more than before. Plus, you will be able to view the exact location of where they are working!
Salary: You can now adjust the workers salary, but be careful! If the worker is unsatisfied with their salary, they may quit! When adjusting the salary, the worker will let you know if their salary satisfaction is either (Poor, Fair or Good). Also, workers with a higher skill level will expect a higher salary.
Personalization: Unhappy with the workers name? You can now edit them to whatever you like!

Autosaves

Autosave will automatically save your game every (1, 2 or 7) in-game days depending on what your preferences. The default is set to every 2 days but you can change this in the settings. You may choose to turn off autosaves in the setting as well.

Autosaves will only override the same autosave.

Research / Upgrades Overhaul

Whats New?

There are now 12 different researches in total! Almost all of the old researches have been remade.
The Research Menu has been completely remade.
The Upgrades Tab is now part of the Lab and not the Main Shelter. Upgrades are available after researching the Upgrades Tab Research.
The Weather Station has been merged with the Lab.
The Research, Upgrades and Weather tabs share the same workers.
There are 8 new Upgrades Available. Including Auto Planting which makes that Farms will automatically replant the same seed without you needing to collect plants manually.

What Changed?

We have replaced the research speed mechanic with the workers skills.
We have removed the Weather Station as an item.
The Lab has been retextured and now takes up an area of 2x2.

Warnings Overhaul

Warning Icons now display a number. This number represents how many warnings are currently going off in each item.
You can toggle off warnings in almost all items.
The SHOW ALL warnings menu was remade and improved.
Multiple warnings with the same message are now collapsed in the top left corner of the screen.
Other Various Improvements

Unfreezing Crews

Instead of manually assigning workers to unfreeze stuff, why not have a dedicated crew to do that for you?

Unfreezing Crews let you assign workers that will automatically go around and unfreeze items and water pipes. You will need to assign workers on both Day Shifts and Night Shifts. You are allowed to assign up to 4 workers per shift. Each worker per shift will be assigned one item to unfreeze.

Unfreezing Priority
Workers will unfreeze an item based on the items Unfreezing Priority and how frozen it is. Each item is given a Unfreezing Priority (None, Low, Med, High or Urgent). You can change each item Unfreezing Priority by navigating to the item menu or by navigating to the weather overlay.

You can unlock the unfreezing speeds upgrades to speed up your Unfreezing Crew.
The Unfreezing Crew is found in the Main Shelter Menu.

New Items

We have added several new items to the game! Here is the list:

Compact Storage: Store more items compared to the regular storage unit while only taking up one tile.
Automatic Tree Farm: Produces an endless supply of wooden planks but requires one worker, electricity and water.
Large Solar Panel: Produce more power with solar energy. Takes up two tiles.
Tall Turbine: Just like the small turbines, it produces power with wind except it is not affected by wind walls! Plus, it produces a little more power than the small turbines.

Changes to the Tutorials

New In-Game Tutorial
We have replaced the Overview Tutorial that was introduced in the Frozen Water Update with a new In-Game Tutorial. You can choose to disable the in-game tutorial when your starting a new game.

The Crafting Basics and Utilities Tutorial available in the main menu have not changed.

Help Buttons
We have added help buttons in some of our menus. By pressing them, it will bring you to a help page giving you more information regarding the menu. Plus, there is an option to get extra help which gives you links to ask your questions directly to the devs and community. The extra links are either to the Death By FrostByte Discord Server or the game Steam Community Forms.

Changes To Manual

Added new manual pages: Land Expansion, Weekly Targets / Objectives, Unfreezing Crew
Improved Manual Index Page: You can now navigate to different sections by clicking on the index lines.

Other Improvements & Fixes

Added 2 New Music Tracks.
Now Displays components and material quantity text when in the Moving Tab.
All Plants have been retextured.
New Time & Speed Menu (top right corner)
Added worker notification when workers quit or optained new skills
New sprite for the currency icon
Improved the tile selection when crafting items
Improved Main Shelter Menu
Changed Input Fields to Popup Input Fields (will limit accidental editing)
Retextured Lead Chunks to look less like Coal Chunks
Improved Item Menus for multiple Items
