We hope you're doing well.🩷 June is in full swing (can you believe half a year has passed already?!), which means it's time for another newsletter about the development of Cat Cafe Manager 2: Big City Bliss!

This month, we're shining a spotlight on a silent but key aspect of any good game: the User Interface.✨

Let's get right into it!🤸

💖UI Deep Dive

A good UI (User Interface) often goes unnoticed, but funnily enough, that's exactly the goal. It's a very important aspect of game development that ensures you can navigate the game with ease and without thinking twice.

Artist and UI specialist Esmeé has worked hard to make the UI in Cat Cafe Manager 2: Big City Bliss both as intuitive and as cute as possible.🐱 She's been refining the menus, buttons, and other on-screen elements that will help you run your cat cafe without a scratch!🐾 I asked her to tell us a little about the process.

🎤My main focus this year has been creating the game's User Interface (UI).

If you've played management games before, you've probably noticed that they're filled with menus, windows, buttons, and information panels. Whether you're preparing resources, serving customers, or managing your café, the game is constantly communicating information to the player.🍰

A big part of UI design is deciding what information to show, when to show it, and how to present it in a way that feels intuitive and enjoyable to use. One example is the "Plating Station UI", which we recently redesigned.🍽️

In an earlier stage of development, players had to walk up to the station and open a full-screen menu to select a prepared dish.🥨 While functional, it could feel a little cumbersome. We've now changed it so the UI appears directly above the player's character (see image below). Players can quickly cycle through their available dishes and make a selection without leaving the game view, making the interaction feel faster and more playful.🧶

Another fun example is the "Cooking Recipes UI":

When designing a new feature, we often start with a wireframe created by Creative Director Rick. A wireframe is essentially a rough sketch that focuses on layout and functionality rather than visuals.

Think of it as the skeleton of the design🦴. Using simple shapes and colors, it helps communicate the features and overall vision for the screen before any detailed artwork is created. 🖼️

Using Rick's wireframe as a foundation, I got to work and expanded on the design. Check out the result in the GIF further below⭐👇.

One of my goals was to maintain consistency with the rest of the game's interface. To achieve this, I reused elements and colors from existing screens that already feel familiar to players, such as the Shop UI. This includes the overall window layout, tabs, scroll bars, and item slots. Reusing these familiar elements helps make the new menus easier for players to instinctively navigate.🩷

My favorite new element is the recipe book panel on the left side! Its paper-like appearance gives the menu a more playful and thematic feel while still fitting naturally alongside the rest of the UI:

Of course, designing a menu isn't just about how it appears in perfect circumstances. We also need to consider how it behaves in different situations.🤔

For example, what should happen when a player doesn't have enough ingredients to cook a recipe?🙅 Or when an appliance is already occupied? 🍳 Buttons, icons, and other visual cues need to clearly communicate these states so players always understand what's happening.

UI Cooking Information

The Cooking UI isn't something that can be considered "finished" yet. UI design is an iterative process. Even after all the artwork has been created, implemented, and fully integrated into the game, we’ll continue refining it based on playtesting and player feedback.🎮

💕As we learn more about how people interact with the game, we may add new icons, adjust layouts, or tweak interactions to improve the overall experience. After all, no matter how good a design looks in art software, you never truly know how it feels until it's in the hands of players.😊

🎂Cat Cafe Manager Turns 4 Years Old Today!!🍰

The first installment of Cat Cafe Manager was released on April 14th, 2022, debuting as our team’s very first game. Back then, we were still a very small team! Roost Games has been steadily growing ever since, and we’re so grateful that we get to continue working on this IP with such a dedicated, tight-knit crew. Hip hip hooray! 🥳

🎮Beta Testing Concluded

By the end of last month, our beta testing period (for Kickstarter backers in the Beta Cat tier and above) came to a conclusion. All the comments, bug reports, survey answers, and recordings we received are invaluable to us and will help tremendously in making Cat Cafe Manager 2 the best it can be.🫶

It was super encouraging to see how warm the overall response was! We received a lot of enthusiasm, particularly about the cat adoption feature🐱, the introduction of two brand-new characters👋, and the general art style🎨. Our next step is to organize all the survey information we received, and use it to improve as we continue development of the game. 🙏

🧁As a little treat, we’d like to share a peek behind the curtain of the beta test we ran. Check out an impression of the gameplay our beta testers got to try below!

⭐VIP Voice Actors

Some actors do not care for money or fame - they work for kibbles and ear scratches. Some have a better work ethic than others, though. Tommy🐈‍⬛ and Vosje🐈, who are extremely professional dev team cats, were hired to record their beautiful meows for our game, with... mixed results.🫢

🎧As our sound designer, Sonya was tasked with collecting cat sounds to implement in the game. Below, she explains how she approached this fun task:

🎤Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent quite some time recording the most important voice actors in the game: cats!🐱 In CCM1, we only used human voices pretending to be cats (which, admittedly, made for some hilarious recording sessions). For CCM2, however, we decided to make a blend of both human and cat sounds. We made this choice because it’s great to have the realism of actual cats, while still being able to create funny and dramatic sounds using human voices.

Recording cats is a challenge in itself.😮‍💨 It’s a bit like trying to work with a musician who keeps running away from you, or who suddenly delivers the most amazing solo right after you stop recording.🤦‍♀️ I found that the best way to go about it is to capture much more material than I need, and then be very critical during the audio selection process. Either way, this aspect of my job has been a great excuse to spend some quality time with cats!

🛍️Let's Go Shopping!

In Cat Cafe Manager 2, it's impossible to run your cafe all by yourself. To grow and improve, you need your entrepreneurial friends. Fortunately, they're always willing to lend a helping hand!🙋

For example, what should you do if you'd like to expand your cafe and build a cozy tea corner?🫖 Easy! You head over to your buddy Rusty at his hardware store - he might even bring a hammer and build you your new annex himself!💪 In desperate need of a cat bed that matches your new wallpaper? No problemo. Visit your friend Carla-Lalla at the Pet Emporium to pick out the cutest one she sells.✨

🚪Welcome, Welcome!

Since we’re aiming for a city filled with lots of different small businesses, we want to avoid constant loading screens whenever you enter a building. Instead, we're designing a more seamless (and much cooler) way to transition gameplay from outside to inside.🩷 With dynamic lighting, smooth fade transitions, and some snazzy camera work, even something as simple as walking into your friend’s shop becomes fun and immersive!🚶‍♀️

In the video below, tech artist Tim gives you a little work-in-progress sneak peek of this new entrance system in action. Again, please be aware that this is early gameplay footage still subject to change.

Every game needs a good soundtrack. We want you to enjoy relaxing music while building your cafe, serving your customers, and - most importantly - scratching your cats behind the ears.🐱 That's why our musician and sound designer Sonya is cooking up some amazing tunes in her studio!🎹 Let's hear what exactly she's been working on:

🎼Adaptive Music
🎤Sonya: "A really cool thing we’re doing more and more of in the second Cat Cafe Manager game, is creating music that moves with the player and the world seamlessly. How, you ask? Let's say you as a player make the decision to walk to a specific area, change the decor, or talk to a particular character, the music will change depending on what you are doing.🐈

This is called adaptive music, and it gives me, as the composer of the soundtrack, lots of freedom and possibilities to keep the music interesting and unique, even for players who spend hours and hours listening to the same track." 💛

🎶Shops & Bops
"Lately, I’ve been working on music for the shopping street🛍️, a place where players will most likely spend quite a bit of time. I had a lot of factors to consider while making this tune. The area has a city-like look that calls for bolder sounds, but it also features plenty of greenery and nature that require a different kind of energy.

I decided to use small percussion sounds recorded in my local park🐝🌳 and blend them with live instruments such as guitar and bass.🎸 The main piece feels quiet and peaceful, but it has room to expand and become more dynamic for major story moments or other scenarios that may come up in your game."

☀️Sunny Sounds
"Another major factor in the shopping street is the time of day. As the player moves through the world, time passes and the atmosphere shifts visually as the day progresses. Morning⛅ should sound distinctly different from evening🌙, so I explored ways to express that contrast through music:

Mornings feel more acoustic, calm, and serene.🩷 Throughout the day, the theme you hear becomes more lively, full, and rhythmic. In the evening, it evolves into something simpler and more electric, giving us a different kind of bliss than the softness of the morning."

🌈Colorful UI

Big strides have been made in the UI department, and we would love to show you a little tease on what you can expect!

UI (which stands for User Interface) is basically everything that helps you interact with all in-game features. Think icons, buttons, pop-ups, menus, colors, and layouts that guide you through the world and help you both understand and achieve the things you want to do. 🎮

It's important to us that our UI doesn't just work well, but also feels like a natural part of the game universe, capturing the colorful, cozy essence of CCM2!

Your Shopkeeper Besties Are Always Willing to Help!

In the image above, you can see how each shopkeeper has their own respective icon, corresponding to their distinct color palette. These will most likely be visible when you're navigating the map,helping you decide at one glance who you want to meet and/or what they can do for you. Need some recipes? You can always knock on Arwel's door. Do your cats yearn for more squeaky toys? Carla-Lalla is your girl!🩷

Fans of the first game might not recognize the two new faces on the right. They're brand new characters you're gonna get to meet in CCM2, and we can't wait to tell you more about them very soon... 👀

It's hard to believe this year is almost over, isn't it?🫨

For us, 2025 has been the year we truly got to dive into the creation of Cat Cafe Manager 2: Big City Bliss. After a successful Kickstarter campaign around the end of 2024, we kicked off 2025 with big plans, ambitious goals, and tons of inspiration. And honestly, we’ve made huge leaps since then!💛

🌷Stop & Smell the Flowers

Over the past month, we’ve been working hard to breathe more life into the streets of Covestadt in Cat Cafe Manager 2. We’ve been busy greyboxing, and tons of new 3D props have been created. The most eye-catching difference is the freshly added vegetation, with plants, flowers, bushes, and trees adding a new layer of liveliness to the game.🌳

Below, you can see what in-game tests with these new nature props look like (but remember that none of these images represent the final product - they’re tests)!

As we round up the year and prepare for the holiday season, we figured there's no better time than now to go through your wish lists! Santa Bonner tells us that everyone in the Cat Cafe Manager 2 community has been exceptionally good to cats this year, so... he has arrived to make a couple of wishes come true! Ho, ho, ho! 🎁

We're happy to say that the following aspects will definitely be included in Cat Cafe Manager 2: Big City Bliss:

Complete freedom in cafe customisation. Furniture styles will not be linked to gameplay progression and benefits. This means that you will be able to decorate the cafe exactly how you want, without experiencing any disadvantages with your customers if you choose not to to place certain objects in your cafe.
A new and improved currency system, compared to the first Cat Cafe Manager.

Walls you can use to divide rooms.

The next list contains great ideas from people within the CCM2 community. We will do our best to include the following things in the game:

Cats with different body types and disabilities.
Hanging plants and hanging cat toys.
These special Furniture Sets: Pride, Garden Witch, Tarot, Insects, Rainforest, Autumn Woodsy, and Flower Power

🐈What Else Are We Adding?

“Nothing beats the original” is a phrase that's thrown around all the time, right? We politely disagree with that.😌 Our team is working hard to make CCM2 a significant step up from CCM1.💪

How exactly? Let us give you a reminder of all the other features we are going to add to Cat Cafe Manager 2!

🐱Your Cats in the Spotlight

🐈Each cat will have their own unique personality. Just like in real life, no two kitties are the same - not on the outside, and not on the inside! In order to keep them happy, it's going to be up to you to figure out what they like and dislike. Additionally, we are working on creating a beautiful variety of visual cat designs to make every cat distinctive in their own right, based on the feedback we've received!
💕As they spend time together, cats will develop different feelings towards each other. Will your kitties butt heads or become best buds? Who knows! This also means that extra special connections can lead to...

Cater to your cats' needs by keeping an eye on their Hunger, Affection, Play, and Hygiene levels.🩷
Adopt your cats in a new way. Win the trust of stray cats with friendly turn-based cat-encounters.
Train your cats and let them help you using their unique Catty Powers✨. Dig up treasures with Burrow Paws, push aside a big boulder to unlock a new area using Mighty Mittens, or discover hidden secrets with Power Snoot!

Take your cats wherever you go as Cat Companions. Your trusty cats won't just entertain your customers in your cat cafe anymore, but can also explore the open world with you as Cat Companions! Cat Companions have all kinds of useful skills, like you can see in the video below. Missy, for example, can use her keen eyes to nab the best berries from a berry-bush! Maybe its time to cook a berry pie back in the cafe?

🧍You & Your Customers:

City-wide open-world exploration. You'll be able to walk straight out your cafe door to explore Covestadt, meet friends downtown, solve puzzles, find hidden treasures, and uncover mysteries!✨
No more advertising for specific customer types. CCM2's cafe visitors will depend on dynamic daily events (weather, city happenings, festivals, etc.). You will have to check your calendar regularly to see which guests are likely to pop in, and start prepping!🧑‍🍳
Did one of your regulars steal your heart?😳 In CCM2, you will be able to romance certain NPCs! Expect gifts, cute dates, and unique romantic story content for each romanceable character!💞
Properly customize the physical features of your character!👗Time for a fresh look? You'll be able to go into town and purchase the finest clothes and nicest accessories to express yourself the way you want!

💌Your feedback and suggestions mean a lot to us. Even though we can’t always make promises, we LOVE getting inspired by your ideas and will do our best to implement them, as long as they’re achievable within our scope and complement the vibe of the game.

We welcome you to Limeline Village, a fairytale neighbourhood tucked into the city of Covestadt! It's lined with canals and narrow streets overgrown with greenery, with colorful historic buildings throughout. Wander and get lost in winding alleyways, uncovering Limeline's magical history and all the secrets it holds... 👀🌳

To shape Limeline Village, our artists Carmen and Esmeé draw inspiration from the charm of historic Dutch design and city architecture (without ever forgetting to also sprinkle a touch of magic into every concept sketch and digital brushstroke✨).

⭐The Magic Is In The Details

Of course, a city is more than its buildings. To truly bring it to life, it’s the little things that tell its story without the need for a single word. Esmeé took it upon herself to really zoom in and design the details that, together, breathe life into the world of Cat Cafe Manager 2.

Traffic signs, storm drains, lightning rods... even litter!🍌 It’s these aspects that make cities feel truly lived in!🩷

We zoomed in quite a bit... now let's zoom back out! To create a playable city for you character to interact in, we need more than engaging art.

In order to test the proportions of the houses, lengths of streets and overall fun of exploring the city, we have started by creating a grid of grey 3D blocks, shaping up a simplified version of the environment of the city. This process is literally called "greyboxing" and even though it is still at very early stages, we wanted to show you how it looks like so far:

🎤 Hi everyone! I'm Esmeé, and I create concept art for Cat Cafe Manager 2 alongside our art director, Carmen. In this newsletter, I'd like to show you what I've been cooking up. And yes, I mean that quite literally, because I've been working on kitchen appliances!

💛Let's Get Cookin'!💛

In Cat Cafe Manager 2, you'll be able to create all sorts of dishes. With the right ingredients, you can follow different recipes by using a variety of machines.

My particular design challenge was to make each machine look as if they would actually be able to create your envisioned dish on their own. That way, the player (you!), can tend to other things that need your attention (like serving customers or scratching your favorite cafe cat behind the ear).

💛Needs More Whimsy!💛

A microwave is just a microwave, so looking up references for an appliance like that is easy. But in the world of Cat Cafe Manager 2, some appliances need a more 💫whimsical touch💫. Sometimes, I need to come up with unique machines, which is a lot of fun but can also be tricky. I don’t know about you, but personally, I don’t have a candy machine in my kitchen to use as reference. So… how do you go about designing one?🤔

💛Making This Thing Work💛

In the case of the candy machine, I researched how real candy is handcrafted. I sketched everything out and noted each step (from kneading to pulling, and so on). I then put every step of the handcrafting process together, combining them all into one big monstrosity of an appliance. Not because that's the design I want to go for, but because it helps me visualize which elements would actually be needed in order to have a functioning candy machine.🍬 After that, I take a step back and ask myself which parts of the process I can simplify or remove.

Once that step is done, I pick a sketch I like and create a few variations of the object. While doing so, I keep in mind the angle from which I want the player character to approach and use the machine. When working on these appliances, I love drawing inspiration from Play-Doh playsets and Habbo Hotel furniture.🩷

After receiving a round of feedback from lead artist Carmen and/or creative director Rick, I refine the sketch we like best. Depending on the complexity of the object, I also draw a side or back perspective for our 3D-modeller Mischa and add some notes.

🍭And... TADA! that is how you end up with a Candy Machine design that looks both fun and functional! :-) Below, you can see what it looks like when these 2D concepts are translated to 3D!

🍼Cat Cafe Manager 2 will have KITTENS!

Whereas cat cafes in the original Cat Cafe Manager were only inhabited by grown cats, things will be a little different in your city establishment in Cat Cafe Manager 2: Big City Bliss.

Because you know, when two cats love each other very, very much... there's a chance they will surprise you with ✨AN ADORABLE KITTEN!✨😻

💕As you can see, kittens will be fully-fledged inhabitants of your cat cafe. They need to be nurtured, fed, and loved as much as your big cats do. Perhaps even a little more!🎀

Our lead game designer Rick will fill you in on some more details:

🎤"We're still working out the exact details for kitten gameplay, but we do know that when two cats get close enough, your cat cafe might be blessed with a little kitten! Kittens inherit visual traits from their parents, but may also acquire their stats and personality quirks. Every kitten is a happy accident, though, so don't expect to tactically breed the ultimate cafe cat.

Of course, kittens are incredibly cute, so your customers will be extra delighted by them. Since they're babies, they also tend to require a little more care than your grown-up cats. They get tired a lot more quickly, so expect them to take lots of cat naps. Growing up is hard work, after all!"

⭐New Cat, Who Dis?

You might have already noticed that it's not just the kittens that are new. Our bigger cats have a new look to them as well! We decided we wanted to give the purring stars of Cat Cafe Manager 2 a little make-over to make them look even cuter. And so we did! 😻

✨A glow-up!✨

Our lead artist Carmen explains how these updated design choices came to be:

🎤"Even though we were already pretty happy with our initial cat designs, we still felt there was room for improvement. That left us with the following question: How do we increase the cuteness of our cat designs?

Simpler, rounder shapes equal more adorableness, which is why I started by adding more inflated, circular forms. I drew inspiration from beloved characters like the Dutch cartoon rabbit Nijntje (internationally known as Miffy), who show that simplicity can be highly effective to achieve that endearing look. With that in mind, I changed the head shape of our cats from an oval to a circle.

Next, I softened every sharp corner I could find to create a sweeter, friendlier look. I simplified the face by reducing black lines and positioning the eyes and snout closer together. The end result is a cat design that is even squishier, softer, and snugglier than before!

Et voilà! That sums up every ingredient needed to create the ultimate cute cat design!"

😽Smitten With Each and Every Kitten!

But Carmen, what about the design process of the brand-new bouncing babies? How did those little floofballs come to be? 👶

🎤"To establish the kitten designs, I studied the fresh look of the adult cats first to figure out a way to make them even more adorable. The key was making the kittens smaller and somehow rounder than the adult cats.

And so I made their heads relatively large compared to the regular cat design and really leaned into that baby look. To top it all off, I added the classic kitten triangle tail.🩷

We're super happy with the updated cats and brand-new kittens, and we hope you are too!😊"

🧑‍🍳We're COOKING!

As demonstrated above, we've already put a lot of love into the explorable outside world of Cat Cafe Manager 2: Big City Bliss over the last couple of weeks. However, it's also important to give some much-needed attention to the most important place of all: your cat cafe!🐈

In the next couple of weeks, we'll be focusing our efforts on setting up gameplay for cooking, decorating, taking care of your cats, and serving your customers. Additionally, we'll be working on the cat cafe’s interior, updating the temporary models and visuals we built for the Kickstarter trailer to new assets that will actually be there to play with when the game launches in Early Access. We hope to have more to share about this in the next couple of months!

🪑Decorating Your Cafe

There is something we CAN share with you already, though: a very early version of the cafe decoration tool! In the GIF below, you can see exactly what our programmer Ernst has been working on:

🤔So... What exactly is happening in the GIF?

In the visual, you can see how Ernst opens up the decoration menu. This menu allows him to see all the furniture and decoration pieces he has collected so far. Of course, you'll be able to furnish your cafe with more items than just chairs (unless you want to transform your game into Chair Cafe Manager; we won’t judge!🪑🪑😸). Every item you place in your cafe can be rotated and positioned anywhere you like.

We’re obviously still early on in the process, but we can already tell it’s going to be so much fun to decorate your cafe with all assets being fully 3D! Oh, and we also have some neat ideas for how pieces of furniture could interact with each other. 🏠Ernst has also been working on a feature that will let you expand your cafe, allowing you to create new rooms and make your floor plan bigger. That feature still needs a little more time cooking in the oven, though, so we’ll save that for another time!

🪹Roosties at Events

Roost Games is a cooperative that operates on a completely remote basis, so we are always super excited to see each other in person at cool game-related events! 👩‍🎨INDIGO Showcase Rotterdam Lead artist Carmen was invited to talk about the artistic process of developing Cat Cafe Manager 2: Big City Bliss at INDIGO Showcase, a game industry business event in the Netherlands.

In her presentation, she highlighted the importance of focusing on details to make an in-game world feel truly lived-in and to enhance visual storytelling. Additionally, she shared the creative thought process behind the jump from creating a friendly village to a cosy city.

Earlier in May, a couple of Roosties met up at A MAZE., a German game event that celebrates alternative and artistic game culture in Berlin. Some of us actually met each other in person for the very first time! Fun stuff! 💛

🙀 These tiny furballs require a little more care than your average feline... but aren't they CUTE?

💪 Kittens start off with lower stats than most cats, but can become very good little kittens if you spend the time & resources to nurture them.

💖 If certain specific cats get close... your cat cafe might be blessed with a new kitten soon! Be sure to take good care of the parents, too!

We also wanted to share some details about the 🐟😻 Adopting stray cats mechanic!

🧭 Finding a stray cat for the first time will add it to your 📀 Cat-o-Dex.
Different strays will appear in different places. If you forget where you found one, you can easily check your Cat-o-Dex!

🌦️ Some strays will only appear under certain conditions, such as a specific time of day or weather. But don't worry, kind folks in town might give you hints on how to find rare stray cats!

Once you find a stray, you can approach them and start a 🐟😻 Stray Encounter!

These are turn-based encounters where each turn, you decide how to approach the stray. Try to win their Trust without startling them!

✋ Petting a stray cat is a great way to earn lots of Trust, but it may cause them to get skittish and run away!

🥫 Most cats can't resist the allure of cat food. If they look ready to run, lure them back in with their favorite treat.

🐱 Some of your Cat Companions can also help! Having them cuddle and play with the stray can put the them at ease and win their Trust!

For this mechanic, we got inspired by the Pokémon safari zone and other pacifist turn-based RPGs. I hope you look forward to finding all the stray cats and winning their trust!

When we started working on the original Cat Cafe Manager, I never in my wildest expectations would imagine we'd one day make a sequel, let alone that the game's fans would help fund its development directly. It's so amazing to me, still. Thank you, really.
