After long months of work, revisions, reworks, balancing, bug hunting with a club, persuading the interface to behave, and holding diplomatic negotiations with particularly stubborn machinery, we are finally ready to announce the date of the final closed beta test for Bravers.

It begins on April 11.

It has been a long road. Over that time, we revisited, rebuilt, and rewrote a great deal, and more than once found ourselves looking under the hood in places that probably should not have been inspected without protective goggles. We fixed quests, tuned the balance, reworked individual mechanics, tracked down strange enemy behavior, cleaned up the interface, refined the pacing, and did our best to make every flight, battle, and trip to the dock feel exactly the way it should in the world of Bravers: a little dangerous, a little chaotic, and incredibly engaging.

We have also fixed a huge number of issues lately — from minor rough edges to bugs that behaved as if they wanted to become part of the lore themselves.

And now Bravers has reached a very important milestone. The final closed beta test is not just another testing phase. It is the last major trial run before release — a moment when it is especially important to gather fresh impressions, see how the game feels as a whole, and make sure its core systems, content, and pacing all work the way they are meant to.

During the test, your feedback will be especially important: what works well, what feels weak, where combat is too punishing or too easy, where the interface gets in the way, where the economy falls short, what feels unclear, and what, on the contrary, turned out especially well.

We want to see not only technical issues, but also how the game feels overall: whether exploring the world is exciting, whether building and upgrading your ship feels satisfying, whether it makes you want to keep pushing forward, whether the atmosphere pulls you in, and whether this whole strange flying-underground machine holds together as one complete experience.

I also want to say a special thank you to everyone who has followed the project, supported it, shared feedback, sent their thoughts, and helped during previous stages. Bravers has become a better game because of that support and attention to detail. Every bug report, every strange issue pointed out, every message along the lines of “it seems like your engine is bolted onto the plot the wrong way around” — all of it genuinely helped move the game forward.

Prepare your ships, check the fastenings, count your ammo, do not trust suspiciously quiet corridors, and remember: if something in Bravers looks safe, it probably just means you have not gotten close enough to it yet.

Ship Blocks Storage in Docks

You now have the convenience of storing your unused ship blocks at the docks! Say farewell to the "You have some uninstalled blocks" message.

With this new feature, you can store and reuse your ship blocks as you progress. It's a seamless way to manage your resources and tailor your ship to ever-changing challenges. Enjoy the freedom to experiment and optimize your ship without interruptions.

Partial Repairs in Docks

Do you know that you can repair your ship blocks at the docks for a much cheaper price compared to ad-hoc repairs? The only downside is that you must pay for the complete repair.

But now, with the latest update to the demo version, we've got some exciting news for you – introducing the ability to do partial repairs! It's super easy – just choose the specific block you want to fix, select resources you want to allocate for the repair, and see how the blocks get mended in proportion to the resources you've provided.

Concentrate Fire

Concentrate fire like never before! Now, you can select a single target, causing all weapons within reach to focus their firepower.

This improvement enables a more precise and coordinated assault, ensuring that every available weapon is utilized against your chosen adversary. Take control of your arsenal and strategically target foes, maximizing the effectiveness of your firepower in every encounter.

Some minor, but noteworthy changes

We've also made some changes to the lightingand rebaked it. As a result, you'll notice slightly refreshed visuals, an enhanced overall atmosphere, and improved performance.

Now, with a simple click of a button, you have the ability to save and restore the positions of your crew as you see fit!

We've made a few improvements to the enemy behavior. They've gotten a little smarter now and won't just blindly charge at your ship anymore.

We've streamlined the crew control for a more intuitive experience. Say goodbye to the guesswork associated with the next mouse right-click action. Now, crew management is more straightforward and user-friendly.

Numerous enhancements to the Docks and Journal windows.

Confession time – we've all been there, forgetting to connect controllable blocks to the command block. But worry no more! With the latest update to Bravers demo, these blocks will now be automatically connected as soon as you leave the shipyard.

Behold the all-new loading screen featuring a status bar – no more guessing if we're stuck or Unity is weaving its magic.

We want to say "Thank you" to our Bravers community for the feedback we got about the demo version of Bravers. We have worked hard to prepare an updated demo version for you to play. And today, we are happy to announce it is available on Steam for everyone.

Build points

We like creativity, but we also believe having 5 turrets is not the same as having 5 storage blocks.

Even if you have enough resources, you cannot build a ship with 10 turrets and go for revenge. Each block now has its own cost in build points. You receive building points with levels or through skills and perks. So plan accordingly.

Save system

We know you have been waiting for it. Now you can save your game at any time and then resume later on.

Do not forget we have some sort of permadeath system in place. Whenever you killed, the save will be deleted, and you have to start from the beginning. It is not a bug. It is a feature.

Key bindings

Another requested feature. Now you can assign your preferred keys to any actions in the game. Want to move forward with "S" and backward with "W" - now you can.

Two new enemies

Be careful. Fire Spitters and Pirates are not the biggest problems anymore. There are 2 more enemies around waiting for the Brave captain.

One of them already looks dangerous, but wait for him to start shooting (or better not). Another one is hard to spot, but trust us - you will remember that moment.

New ship block

We added a new block to the demo for you to try different game strategies. Being simply an armor block, it may change your game style completely. There is no need to tank with your engine anymore.

But even with lots of resources, you cannot build a ship surrounded by armor blocks. Remember that build points story?

Rendering and Visuals

We fixed the FPS issue. We changed the Unity version (that was a bumpy ride). We completely changed the rendering pipeline and the way we work with assets. As a result - 300+ FPS (we even had to cap it) and a new look of the scenes. Enjoy.

Equipment and Perks system

Now you can equip your crew members with items. Maximum of 2 items allowed per crew member. It will give you some bonuses, to make your life easier. Try using binoculars, for example.

Sometimes your crew members will get perks. Those are mainly random and can be positive and negative. Remember, you can still throw any crew member out of the ship.

Help System

We added more information to the in-game help menu. Do not hesitate to look through if you are new to the Bravers world.

Performance

We are sorry :weary: if FPS issues made an impact on your game experience with Bravers demo. It is gone now. We worked hard for the last week to identify the problem and work on the solution. We got at least 2 times increase in performance in the worst case scenarios. In most cases, it is 3 to 5 times (Alex said it could be 20 times higher...). Now you are limited to your refresh rate, not the hardware.

Crew Positions

We know. It was painful... each time you have to go one by one and assign your lovely crew members to the stations. It is history now.

Now your crewmates should remember their positions and return to them after you leave docs. We love to see how they go the blocks. It is like you go to the office each Monday.

Sure it would not work if you sell blocks or got new crew members, but still. What a huge time saver!

Other small but important changes

Ship direction icon added to the map
Loot lifetime increased by 50%. Kill first, pick up later.
Encounter rewards increased still could be a fire though...
Now you can open and close journal using same hotkeys
Capacity and Weight wouldn't show at the bottom panel if they appeared on other UI elements

We also fixed some bugs

Romans fault. He forgot to add enemies to one of the world blocks. At all. They are back and very angry. We would not name the location now; you will find out if you get to that place next time. Watch your back!
When using the tactical pause, the timer on loot drops does not pause. Now you can have a cup of coffee and then get back to your loot.
Controlled block is displayed on ship structure screen after destruction.
Booster can be activated without crew member in controlling block after undock.
Enemies stuck at the wall.
We did not show the ending text at the end of the game in the Russian language. Извините.

As we mentioned before, we have come to the point where we need a demo version of the game. Through this text, we want to share our expectations for the demo version and share with you what we will be working on in the near future.

Why do we need a demo

Feedbacks and reviews

We have been working on the game for over a year now. We know everything about it and we love every byte of it. And it can be a problem - we have very little feedback and comments from regular players who are not familiar with the world of Bravers.
Do you like the graphics? Do you like controls? Is it necessary to change the speed of the ship or add new weapons? What is the overall feel of the game? We want to hear and listen to others to make our game fun for everyone.

Measure performance

Working on Bravers, we aim for performance. We work with lighting, use low-polygonal models, create our own physics and AI. But sky's the limit. The demo version and performance reports from different players with various hardware will provide us with information so we can further tweak the performance.

Spread the word

We are open to critics and suggestions. The demo version will help more people to discover Bravers. We want as many people as possible to participate in the development of Bravers. We would like to bring together everyone who likes our game and just those who like to develop games on our Discord.

Roadmap for demo

Our task tracker handles a huge number of tasks for the demo version. Today, we would like briefly tell you about some of them to share our plans for the very near future.

At the moment we are still using the standard Unity buttons in many parts of the UI. Our aesthetic perception prevents us from keeping them in the demo version, so we all have a lot of work to do designing the new UI.

The story of Bravers will also unfold through a series of quests. To make the game more interesting to play, random encounters will occur during the game. Some quests and encounters will be available in the demo version.

At this stage, we are good at the basic ship, character, and crew controls. For the demo though, we lack the crew skills management system. We have an idea of what it should look like. Just need to implement it. Easier said than done.

We are also working on an in-game tutorial. We believe the controls are very simple, but the tutorial makes the learning curve easier. The tutorial will show you how to design and control your ship, how to command your brave crew, and survive.

The journey is always better in a good company and with good music. There is a complete silence in the world of Bravers today, rarely interrupted by shell explosions. We promise to fix it in the demo version. We cannot promise that it will be the final soundtrack, as there is a long road ahead of us with audio. Still, we will do our best to show the feel and atmosphere of the Bravers world.
