Hello friends!
I wanted to post something since it has been a while, and I don't have much in the way of good news. I found out the Discord link was out of date, and have since updated the links, they should now work my apologies!
I have been trying out a few methods to continue development while working on the big "2.0 Update" which is yet to he named. Unfortunately, I have been so focused on how to remake the game, that I've left the base game completely untouched.
Due to my time constraints, I have been attempting to use AI as a way to speed up development on a seperate fork of the source code, and the results are beyond undesirable. While I was able to implement a few performance upgrades, mostly centred on loading in asteroids live instead of keeping thousands loaded, I have ended up destroying a lot of the code base in the process by experimenting. This is the result that I expected, however I was really hoping to be wrong for the sake of Stellaxy.
The good news is that the original code is still in tact, however I've wasted a LOT of time just trying to figure out why it doesn't feel fun. Every "upgrade" visually, has come at the cost of gameplay & controls, and I can't accept a worse experience.
Stellaxy, and the sequel are essentially toast. After consulting with a long time friend, I don't believe it makes sense to continue the development process. This sucks, and I hate giving up, but everything I've done has only made the development builds worse.
A few years ago, I came to the conclusion that Stellaxy is not really a good game, and every encouragement otherwise has never convinced me that I'm wrong. It's always "not many people have done it" or "it's still impressive you did it at all" or "it's hard to put yourself out there creatively". These comments are nice for me personally, but not for Stellaxy. I've already been putting myself out there creatively for years before Stellaxy, and that doesn't excite me anymore. I want to make something actually good, and Im accepting that this might be as good as I get as a gamedev.
Outside of that, I am just tired of dealing with trolls, spam, and entitlement. It's not the same as it was 10 years ago (maybe it never was that way at all), and I don't enjoy gamedev as much as I used to. This is a $5 game with a $0 budget, that I made in my spare time, while trying to live my real world life. This is also a game that has cost me job interviews, friends, time to myself, and the respect of others. All because I dedicated years to a game idea that I thought was cool.
It's just not worth the cost anymore, and above all else I feel like I've lost the heart and soul that was originally poured into this game. I loved constructing languages for each species, and developing cultures and personalities for them. I've always loved storytelling, and I really thought videogames would be the medium, because my entire childhood was videogames.
This is a long winded post, because I know some of you genuinely enjoyed the idea behind the game, and I'm really sorry to a few of you in specific. I just can't do this anymore, no matter how much funding I have, my heart is no longer in it. I'm not going to announce a new game, and I wish you all the best.
