This last patch was a huge art update. Almost all characters received a high fps walking animation cycle. Previously, characters only had a running cycle and idle. The walk cycles took up most of the hours contributed to the game since the last patch.

Shogun and Sero's walking sprites have not been updated with a walk cycle.

The autosave feature was great in theory. It was difficult to implement as a feature without adding optimization issues to the game. Familia may again have an autosave feature in the future, but it will take time to find and create the best solution.

Thanks to Mushi, Lemon, Codemora, and LMPGames for all your helps with this patch. The game is better than ever, and I could have never done it alone.

Holy cow! My last major update on Steam was March 20th, 2021. To say it has been too long since I've posted an update is an understatement. I'll admit I got discouraged on this project and a bit burnt out. I took some time to recover and now I'm back in full swing. The last quarter of 2021 was extremely productive for the Familia franchise.
I currently have the Act 2 release date set to this summer. This date will most likely be pushed back further. I keep going back and cleaning up / adding content to Act 1. This means that Act 1 is better, which creates a better foundation for Act 2, so ultimately it's what is best for the whole series. Please be patient. If you would like to expediate the release of additional Familia content, please consider leaving a review or gifting the game to your friends.

Make sure to Wishlist Act 2. It really helps to keep the project on track.

Many hardcore Familia players have requested more difficult and scalable content. Your voices have been heard. Familia 1.3 introduces the Reach Facility.
In ancient times, the mysterious Immortals used the Reach Facility to train their bodies and minds to endure unimaginable horrors. The facility has gone unused for millennia until now. With the help of eletrowisps Oxalis 883 and Scilla 691, you can explore the perilous Reaches. Reaches are dimensional gaps in reality, which are disjointed from spacetime. Here our heroes will face adversaries who are unimaginably powerful.
The Reach Facility, features access to Familia's new procedural dungeon generation system. Every visit to the Reaches will be unique. All runs can also be set to a difficulty level from 1 to 9999 with Oxalis 883. The Reach Facility also gives the player access to the most powerful armor and weapons in the game. Loot from the Reaches is procedurally generated.
Now when your characters hit level 50, they will become a Master of their class. At this point, they can level up their 'master level'. Each master level allows you to upgrade a specific stat of your choice by a limited amount. The stat allocation can currently only be managed by Oxalis 883 .
Gain access to the Reach Facility by completing new questlines. The new questlines update the player on Familia's favorite Goblin, Glen. Glen must be found to help open a mysterious ancient door located in the Kalbi Waterways.

I moved away from the RPG Maker sprite style. I also have set up a system to scale sprites which gives more variety to the game. As I've become more skilled in game dev and art creation, I've implemented more stunning visual content.
There are a few maps I intend to upgrade but for the most part, all of the maps have had a very customized touch.
Along with new maps and sprites, many cutscenes have been refined and enhanced.
There were many bugs plaguing the game for far too long. I'm happy to say that the game is currently boasting very little bugs thanks to all of the community playtesting. I could not do it without you guys. If you find a bug, PLEASE REPORT IT.

Beta versions of both mobile and desktop port of Familia will be hosted on itch.io. Here you can test unreleased content and help contribute to the development process.

Hello everyone! I am sorry it's been so long since I've posted a proper update. I have been appreciate all the love that Familia has been getting from Streamers, youtubers, and bloggers. Sales are steadily increasing every month.
I took a quick break for a few months in January but I'm back now in full swing. I will be streaming on Twitch (https://twitch.tv/mauigamestudio) every day updating Familia and working on Act 2 for all of you.
Wishing you all the best,

Right now if you visit the page, there is a page of me talking about the game. It's not a very polished trailer. Expect some awesome trailers soon.
Yes, I will be and have been creating new sprites for weeks to come. The run-of-the-mill RPG Maker style sprites are not in alignment with the rest of the game's high quality and original style. Bear with me as this is very ambitious update. Come cheer me on on Twitch. I stream every day for roughly 10 hours.
I am aware that there are a few bugs that have been reported and not fixed for months. Rest assured, the fixes are on the way. I have been making big changes to the base game and because of the nature of said changes, it's best to delay updates until mid-April Make sure to report any bugs to the feedback channel in discord or on the Steam forums to make sure I get all the bugs fixed for Act I by the next update.
I've gotten a great response from the initial change in the way enemies engage with the player in Familia. I'm working on a way to randomize where enemies spawn to make the game a bit more exciting for multiple play-throughs.
I've been doing lots of traditional art and pixel art. I am adding character portraits to many of the existing characters like this pirate below.
I did the last Ludum Dare game jam late last year. My goal was simple: participate and become more familiar with Unity. The next game will be released in April and my goal is to make a game that will rank in the top 100. I currently am planning on collaborating with an amazing team so I think this game will be great. Look forward to being able to play the game jam game for free!
With the next update the Familia scores at speedrun.com will be locked in so make sure you try to get on the score board before it's too late. With the upcoming features to Familia, times will be drastically increased to where it will not be possible to get times beyond the current record. Thus, it will be restarted.
Maui Game Studio has been making leaps in social media.

Edit: It has come to my attention that with the most recent update, people are losing their saves. Don't worry! The saves are safe in your installed Familia folder. In the Familia install directory, simply grab the files in the 'www/save' folder and move them to the 'save' folder
Edit: It has come to my attention that with the most recent update, people are losing their saves. Don't worry! The saves are safe in your installed Familia folder. In the Familia install directory, simply grab the files in the 'www/save' folder and move them to the 'save' folder at the top of the Familia directory. If there is no 'save' folder in the Familia directory, simply create one. Doing the above should restore any lost saves. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
Familia, Act 1 is now available for Mac OS. Setting up a Mac OS port was difficult, so please give it a try. There are probably still a couple of Mac OS specific bugs so make sure to report those to me. Just like the Windows version, the Mac OS version of Familia requires a Steam client.
For those of you who are curious about the development side of things, I am now using RPG Maker MZ to continue to work on Familia. I tried RPG Maker MZ when it was first released and was not impressed. However, at second glance, migrating my game to RPG Maker MZ was relatively painless. I initially thought a migration would be far more difficult.
For those of you who just want to play the game, with RPG Maker MZ Familia runs faster than ever. So if you have an older computer, the new version of Familia will run smoother than before. Also, I am always getting better at game development so as I work on the game, it organically becomes exponentially optimized.
The structure of Familia utilizes Acts that are broken into parts. Since the original release of the game, Act 1 featured five parts. With this release, I have added the sixth and final part of Act 1. Act 1, Part Six will be essential in setting up Act 2. Eventually, Act 2, 3, 4, and 5 will be playable in the player's desired order. Thus Act 1, Part 6 will assume the role of a major quest hub where players will choose which character story they wish to follow first.
Familia Act 2 will most likely be released as a DLC. I will be working regularly on Familia content, but I have also been flirting with a retro-style MMO action RPG. The working title for my MMO is 'Stormers' and I have been building it in Unity engine. Expect a new Steam page for both Familia Act 2 and Stormers by the end of the year.
As a side note, I have rebranded my game development company. The new name is 'Maui Game Studio'. I took the opportunity to highlight come culturally Hawaiian symbols in the new logo. I hope you like it.

Edit: I made a video about switching engines on YouTube.
Random Encounters Removed form All Areas Except World Map These areas include the following: Intro desert areas Kalbi Beach, Kalbi Waterfall, Kalbi Cave Volcano areas Kalbi Castle, Kalbi Dungeon, Kalbi Jail Caves Cave and path leading to Kalbian Refuge *The world map features ran
The truth is that I've always been on the fence regarding random encounters. I was trying to create something like the games I played in the 90s. I have achieved that. However, after extensive research and testing I've come to the conclusion that the younger generation of gamers have no patience for random encounters.
This was a difficult decision for me to make, as I love random encounters. I hope to have some form of random encounters as a gameplay option eventually but currently my resources only allow me to create and maintain one version of the game.
Now in hostile areas, enemies will walk around randomly as visible sprites. If your bump into an enemy sprite, they will attack you. Certain sprites will even chase you.
Act 2 content can be found in Familia's current public build, even if not accessible through normal gameplay methods. While I prefer the game is not mined for spoilers I'm also aware that such things are inevitable. All mined content should be considered tentative.
I've had difficulty acquiring high-quality art. Fans of the Familia franchise have high standards for art quality. I am talking specifically about the art I used for character portraits. A continued episodic release is proving more difficult than I initially expected. Recommissioning the same artists multiple times is unrealistic. I will continue to build out the series with placeholder art, which will allow me to commission all the needed art in one go. Thus, the game will be completed later that I hoped. If you would like the game sooner, donations and purchases always help. I'm currently considering a membership program similar to Patreon.
I always welcome testers, especially Twitch streamers. I find streaming new game content to be the useful because I get to see multiple opinions in a single live interaction. Video content creators are great as well. Thus, if you are a content creator and would like to play early versions of the game please contact me. Testing is not exclusive to content creators. Anyone can help. If you are interested in testing Familia, join my discord server or drop by my stream to chat.

I am excited to announce the first optional dungeon for Familia Act 1 is live. This dungeon was a joy to create because I got to create a story within the Familia universe that wasn't confined to the progression of the main plotline. This dungeon is unlike any of the existing game.
While for the most part, Familia is a classic RPG so random encounters come with the territory. However, I wanted to create a dungeon with zero random encounters. Mother's Cave features zero random encounters.
Again Animlouis has helped with some Animations. I am blown away that this guy is willing to help out the project. He is so gracious when I give him feedback. The new animations look great.
While the class is a bit simple, it will be a welcomed addition to Familia players. I can't describe the class too much because it's heavily related to the story of the Mother's Cave. Careful, the new class design may be permanent.
Many new unique fights with new and unique abilities. Fight the most difficult enemies ever seen in the Familia world. New enemies also come with many new abilities.
Complete Familia's most difficult achievement yet by surviving the perils of Mother's Cave.
The following Bosses Have Been Replaced by More Difficult Versions for Game+
I currently am debating making a more difficult version of the 'Fiend of Fire' but have not worked out the details.
Duel Wield Improvements
The dual wield system in the game now damages separately for each hit. Previously, dual-wielding simply combined the traits of both weapons and ran them twice. Going forward, this will heavily affect many abilities. For example, some abilities will only consider the main hand with stacking damage.
Also, certain weapons will only be equipable with two hands. The most prominent example would be the King's Odachi.
The main characters' home now features an in-game tutorial that gives game mechanic insight in the game. Also, the same content from the in-game tutorial can be found in this guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2101704986.

Thank you, everyone, for your help to make Familia the best game it can be. Not only have I received tons of feedback but many from the community have actually helped me with art and code for the game. @Animlouis and @Codemora, in particular, have been especially helpful for this last update.
This update post will be categorized into Art/Music, User Interface, Story, and Mechanics.
With the help of Animlouis, we all have 100%, animated enemies. Initially, in order to keep the project in an achievable scope, I was trying to avoid animated enemies. However, after a massive backlash, I decided to take the time to minimally animate all of the enemies in the game.
Some of the game scenes felt a bit too one-dimensional so a few additional songs were added for some tonal variety.
Additional sprites were required. Showing them here would be a bit of a spoiler but let me know if you see them in the game.

After checking out a game called Insignia by Adam C. Yunis (https://www.twitch.tv/adamcyounis), I decided to add a community menu. Now, players can access my Twitch, Instagram, Discord, and website from the game.
Thanks to Isabella Ava (https://master2015hp.itch.io/olivia-victory-addon) and Olivia (https://fallenangelolivia.itch.io/victory-sequence-ui) for creating great plugins. Also thanks to Codemora for helping me edit these plugins so they victory screen aligned with my vision.

If players were not accustomed to RPG's, they may not realize they can escape from battle. Now at the beginning of the player's first fight, a quick tutorial pops up and lets the player know that escaping is an option.

The prologue has been edited to be a bit more interesting. Return players also will be able to skip the prologue for speed runs.

New unique credit scenes, giving thanks to all those who helped Familia get to this point
I don't want to go into depth about this scene. It contains massive spoilers. It was originally going to be a very long scene and it has been shortened, and I'm very happy with it.
The main town always seemed a bit unfinished, so I went ahead and rebuilt the town from scratch. It has a much nicer vibe now.

Elemental damage and absorption were lacking consistency in the world of Azaconia. For the most part, this has been fixed. The elemental strengths and weaknesses in the game are largely influenced by ninjutsu in the Naruto universe.
Based on test feedback, the game has been made generally easier. Many people feel that the game is still a bit too difficult, but I am standing pretty firm on the current level of difficulty. Let me know what you think.

Added additional achievements. The most difficult achievement was completed by @VetheGoth. This achievement requires the player to defeat a superboss with Sero at the party.
Both enemies and playable characters gained about 30 new skills in this last update.
Act 1 will include a few additional sidequests before Act 2 begins full-scale production. The sidequests will be quests that the player is able to complete at multiple points of the game for helpful gear. My plan is to spend roughly a month creating sidequest content, then I'll decide the exact amount of optional dungeons the game will include. I'm fairly confident that there will be two additional dungeons minimum.
In the last update post, I was debating what next steps we will be taking. The two options (1) set up a demo for mobile ports or (2) start on Act 2. I've decided to start on Act 2 Next. The mobile port will not come along for a while. Windows-based computers easily run Familia with no additional processing optimization. It's best to have a clear view of the current state of current devices before starting a mobile port. If I began the port now, the porting process would have a much larger scope when compared to porting a complete game.
A few trailers are on the way. I want to do three trailers. I plan to first release a gameplay trailer, with a voiceover from myself. Second, I want to do a story trailer, with maybe a guest voice actor. Then I want to release a streamer compilation showing different people enjoying the game.
I hope all of you are happy and healthy. Watch out for that Corona Virus! The last update went great. Thank you, everyone, for the valued feedback. Many awesome changes have been added. I'm very excited. 1) Achievements Achievements are currently active in the game again. I did a

The last update went great. Thank you, everyone, for the valued feedback. Many awesome changes have been added. I'm very excited.
Achievements are currently active in the game again. I did a full speed playthrough earlier today and everything works with achievements active. Halleluia!
All turn-order icons are set up. I also switched out an animated boss.
Previously, the game allowed you to save anywhere. Now a save point is required to save in dungeons.
While it's nice to create new content, polishing is where most of my time goes.

Let's get the bad news out of the way. I made some updates to the combat system. These updates are awesome and they fulfill the game's creative vision. However, any saves made prior to March 1st will now cause the game to crash. If you have gotten very far in the game and wish to continue with your stats and items, let me know.
I am happy to make a custom save file for each and everyone with whatever they want if they purchased the game before March 1st. I'll do this despite the continued warnings in the game's description saying that the game is still in Beta.
May I offer an alternative to requesting the save file? I'm adding new content to the game every week. Perhaps you may want to start fresh and try the game again? It also will not hurt to wait for additional updates.
More bad news: I had to temporarily remove achievements as they were causing crashes and menu errors. Don't worry, I intend to add achievements back into the game as soon as possible. Depending on what works, this could be fast (but it could also take a long time). Even though the game description states that achievements are currently a feature of the game, achievements are not currently a feature of the game.

I would also like to take a minute to talk about what I am still adding to the game so you know what to expect and you can decide rather or now you would like to wait for additional content before starting your adventure.
After the above items are completed two possibilities exist. The most likely possibility is that I will begin work on the next episode, Familia Act 2. The less likely possibility is that I will export Act 1 as a playable demo for Android and/or iPhone. The outcome is contingent on too many factors. I'll let you know when I'm more clear about how to proceed.
Thank you for checking in with Familia. If you want to help this project. Please leave a positive review here on Steam. Come say hello to me on twitch when you have some time.
