Giovanni Ricci’s Men: The Enforcers

Giovanni Ricci tolerates many things. Theft from his pocket is not one of them.

His men are seasoned mercenaries from Venice, Zadar and the lands surrounding the Adriatic, brought north to protect their master's person, merchandise and business interests. They wear fine Italian armor and carry equipment beyond the means of most common fighting men.

Their purpose extends beyond guarding Giovanni.

The lists leave behind dead men, and dead men leave behind valuable arms and armor. Giovanni expects such goods to pass through the proper hands. A fighter who occasionally takes something from the fallen may escape his attention. One who grows wealthy by systematically stripping corpses will not.

Once Giovanni believes a fighter's fortune has been taken rather than earned, he sends his men to collect what he considers his due.

They do not come to negotiate. They will seize the offending equipment. Resist them, and they will beat or kill you for it. Lose the fight and they may strip you of far more than what you originally took. Die, and the matter resolves itself just as neatly for Giovanni.

Dogomoj Ratković is among the men trusted with such work. His loyalty to Giovanni comes from years of shared history rather than simple payment.

Sir Matteo da Castelfranco represents another breed entirely, an accomplished professional in modern Italian armor whose loyalty lasts precisely as long as Giovanni's money does.

For Giovanni, either kind will suffice.
