But spiritual successor Phoenix Point, built by the original X-COM creator Julian Gollop and his team at Snapshot Games, has just launched a vast overhaul that might well scratch the itch. Dubbed the Firebird update, this colossal free upgrade is heavily inspired by its most popular mod, and has been built alongside the team that made it. Phoenix Point arrived on Steam five years ago, and it truly warms our hearts to see a steady flow of new players still discovering it - as well as many veterans returning after a long break. This anniversary felt like the perfect moment to celebrate, and we wanted to show our appreciation by bringing you a new free update, along with a 60% discount for newcomers.
Below you’ll find the areas we focused on for this update, followed by the full patch notes. But before diving in, we owe a major shoutout to the Terror From The Void mod and all of its contributors.
For more than three years, the TFTV team has been tirelessly updating and refining their vision of Phoenix Point - polishing existing systems, rebalancing missions and classes, adding brand-new mechanics, and creating great additional tools. With TFTV you can find a huge range of optional gameplay adjustments, UI enhancements like a screen showing every available haven recruit, redesigned missions and classes, the terrifying Revenants (nightmarish replicas of your fallen soldiers), and countless other improvements.
In fact, many of the changes in this update were inspired by TFTV. If you enjoyed Phoenix Point, we highly recommend trying the mod.
Since large updates can easily break large mods, we worked closely with the TFTV team throughout development. The result is full compatibility, even for ongoing TFTV campaigns.
If you’re playing with mods - such as Terror From The Void or the Officer Class Mod - please make sure you have the latest versions installed.
If your mods don’t update automatically, simply exit and restart Steam.
One of the main issues we identified is that the campaign - especially in the mid and late game - can start to drag, feeling repetitive and overstretched. Phoenix Point is packed with content, but sometimes that content extended the campaign more than it enriched it.
Because the research system controls so much of your progression, we wanted to help players advance more smoothly without cutting content. To that end:
All research times have been reduced by 20%.
Construction time for the major faction-ending project buildings has been reduced by 50%.
These changes help the campaign reach its more interesting decision points sooner, without rushing players or removing depth.
A common frustration for players - especially newcomers - was ending up with just slightly fewer resources than needed to restock basic ammo. This created tedious loops instead of meaningful strategic choices. To ease this unnecessary pressure and help players focus on the broader game, we’ve made the following adjustments:
Reduced ammo production costs by 20%.
Reduced facility construction costs by 20%
This should ease early-game pressure and allow players to invest in their bases and squads more freely.
Haven Defense missions are an important part of the game: they’re a way to earn resources, diplomacy, and reveal Pandoran bases. However, the sheer frequency of them - combined with the inconsistency of their difficulty - often made them feel repetitive rather than rewarding.
Instead of reducing their number (which would break multiple progression loops), we made targeted systemic improvements:
Threat level is now calculated not only from the attackers’ strength, but also from the difference between attacker strength and Haven Defense strength, leading to more logical and fair battles.
Training and Elite Training Centers now grant improved defensive structures, making havens more capable of defending themselves.
All this means Haven Defense missions now feel more optional, giving you breathing room to focus on higher-priority objectives.
We also wanted the strategic layer to be smoother and more intuitive.
The manufacturing screen is now far easier to read and manage:
Ammo is displayed directly on the same row as its associated weapon, reducing clutter dramatically.
A new button has been added to reorder items in the manufacturing queue more easily.
For years, players wondered what happened to partially used magazines after missions. Previously, these were hidden until they combined into a full stack - which caused confusion.
Now:
Partial magazines are displayed clearly, with a proper interface designed specifically for them.
We’ve removed one of the hidden sources of late-game enemy scaling:
Pandorans no longer receive evolution points when their bases are destroyed or when they lose battles to you.
This keeps the long-term difficulty curve fairer and more predictable.
These missions often felt too unforgiving. We wanted to preserve the tension, but reduce the randomness of instant soldier deaths.
Changes include:
Deployment points are now weighted toward reinforcements rather than initial deployment.
Buffer zones have been added between the rescued soldier and nearby aliens.
The rescued soldier is now more likely to survive long enough for you to reach them - but extraction will require more planning.
A long-standing issue caused ambush missions to become extremely rare after loading a save. This has now been fixed, so expect to encounter more of them.
To make ambushes more rewarding and strategic:
Some maps now include loot crates containing valuable items - if you’re willing to take the risk.
Surviving an ambush now grants Skill Points, which you can distribute among your squad.
Cybernetics repairs were often prohibitively expensive. To encourage players to actually use these systems:
Repair costs have been reduced by 50%.
The ancient weapon progression was atmospheric, but too long and too complex, often slowing down campaigns significantly.
To streamline it:
You no longer need to control processing sites to use ancient resources.
Processing sites have been removed from the Geoscape (existing saves will still show them, but inactive).
Processing site maps have been merged into regular resource site missions.
Excavation of ancient sites no longer costs resources or time - missions can begin immediately.
Umbra enemies also received a round of adjustments aimed at smoothing out difficulty spikes while keeping their encounters tense and memorable.
Arthron Umbras now deal slightly less damage.
Triton Umbras have been reworked to heal on hit and move even more fluidly, but their attack cost has been increased from 1 AP to 2 AP to keep them in check.
All Umbras now die instantly when they come into contact with fire, regardless of remaining HP.
Festering Skies has always introduced a unique tension with the Behemoth - a threat so large that players often felt they had little control over its destructive path. One of our biggest goals for this update was to give you more meaningful ways to interact with, disrupt, and counter the Behemoth’s behaviour.
One of the biggest steps was refining how and why the Behemoth attacks havens. Previously, these attacks could feel sudden or inevitable. Now, the Behemoth only targets havens if a Pandoran flyer has visited them and successfully returned. This creates a clear strategic window: if you intercept the flyer before it makes it back, the haven remains safe.
To reinforce this sense of influence, we broadened the systems that generate disturbance for the Behemoth.
You’ll now gain disturbance not just from air battles, but also:
When destroying Pandoran bases
When havens defend themselves during Behemoth attacks
These additional sources make the Behemoth cycle feel more dynamic. Even if it moves into a region you cannot reach immediately, the world still pushes back, and your actions elsewhere still matter.
To support all this, we improved the UI for the air game. It’s now much easier to track enemy aircraft and inspect their weapon loadouts - a crucial part of preparing your own aircraft to counter specific threats.
Myrmidon Adjustments
The Myrmidon has also received a significant redesign to make its behaviour more interesting and more consistent with the theme of the DLC. Ground movement has been reduced while flight range improved, leading to encounters where they take to the air far more often. This changes overwatch possibilities and limits their follow-up attacks, shifting the overall dynamics of these encounters.
Their base stats have been unified across all three variants, with the body receiving increased durability - and disabling it now results in the immediate death of the Myrmidon. The wings remain fragile, giving you the option to ground them by disabling flight and further crippling their movement even when you can’t eliminate them outright. Myrmidons are now also fully capturable, allowing you to gain the vivisection damage bonus if you choose to research one, and to process them into food or mutagens depending on your needs.
Our main focus here was improving the Acherons.
They were originally designed as support units that complicated the battlefield with strange abilities and disruptive effects. But in practice, they often dominated encounters by repeatedly summoning reinforcements or resurrecting corpses - quickly overwhelming squads and forcing a “kill this immediately or lose” situation. We wanted to preserve their identity while reducing this oppressive behaviour.
The first step was making them easier to bring down: their husk armor has been reduced significantly. But the more important change was separating their signature abilities so that no single variant can do everything at once.
Call Reinforcements is now exclusive to Asclepius and Asclepius Champion
Resurrect Corpses is now exclusive to Achlys and Achlys Champion
Both abilities now also have increased AP and WP costs, which prevents them from spamming these actions endlessly. They can still disrupt your plans, but they no longer take over the entire mission.
To keep them dangerous and interesting, we expanded their basic attack options with effects like mist, poison, and acid, and reshuffled their supporting abilities to create more variation between encounters. Acherons should now feel like a tactical puzzle again - unsettling and unpredictable, but fair and beatable.

Terror from the Void takes that vision and runs with it, asking the question: what more could be done in terms of balancing and harmonizing the base game and the DLC content? How could the systems be adjusted with reference to experienced TBT players who value interesting tactical decision-making, while also making the game even more enjoyable for novice players? If the original horror setting was pushed into and explored more fully?
This is a total conversion, created by fans for fans, that seeks to realise the untapped potential in the original product, and elevate one of the hidden gems of the genre by polishing, streamlining, and, where necessary, re-imagining the original. The scope of the work cannot be overstated, and the points above are only a rough guide to the changes. Almost every system has been touched, chopped, and changed, with an insistence on maintaining the original feeling and identity of the product.
Terror from the Void has been built in the grand tradition of fan reworks in the TBT space. Our community response during the open beta has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are enormously proud of our product. From the depths, a new danger has emerged to jeopardize Phoenix and the entire planet. This third wave of Pandoravirus threatens to plunge the world into madness if not confronted, but the road to recovery won’t be easy.
Terror from the Void is a fan-created conversion mod that introduces new and changed game mechanics, enemies, and more for Phoenix Point and includes the team’s previous Better Classes changes, which tweak soldier classes and skills. If you’ve only played the standard Phoenix Point to date, expect a very different experience with this mod!
Terror from the Void is an open beta release that includes many new features, with the Phoenix Rising team focusing on a few key areas for their mod: More player choice and campaign progression, increased strategic options, and a high degree of game customization for players.
Players can now begin their TFTV campaigns aligned even closer with one of the NPC factions through Origins, granting a starter faction soldier to help fight the Pandorans from Day One; for example, selecting a New Jericho origin will award players with a Technician ready to go. These soldiers can even arrive buffed with higher stats to help you face the horrors to come.
And horrors do await, as the Phoenix Rising team has re-introduced Oneiric Delirium, a game mechanic that takes its toll on your soldiers’ psyche as the campaign progresses. Players must manage their soldiers carefully to keep them operational, as Delirium saps their Willpower, but it can also be harnessed into unique perks or advantages. Be warned, though, as the Oneiric Delirium Index increases, more powerful and harsher effects will rear their head, but players can remove this threat as they progress through the story.
The reframing of Oneiric Delirium is just one piece of a story reinterpretation that the Phoenix Rising team has integrated into the Terror from the Void mod. Much of the existing in-game text has been tweaked, and new lore, characters, and more have been added as well as a reassessing of missions to reflect those changes. You can expect a very different campaign flow than in a standard Phoenix Point campaign!
Of course, the core of any mod is how it changes the gameplay, and Terror from the Void offers lots of new challenges and tweaks. Alongside tougher choices when diplomatically engaging with the various factions, TFTV also introduces Void Omens, temporary global effects that bestow bonuses and penalties linked to the addition of Oneiric Delirium. For example, players may find their skills cost more Will Points, but the Delirium has no effect on their soldiers - or for a period of time, havens in the Mist become Infested when destroyed.
New enemies also join the battlefield, including redesigned Umbras that focus on Delirium-tainted soldiers and grow more powerful over time, and Revenants, reanimated soldiers that now fight for the Pandorans that adapt to your tactics. Thankfully, defeating these threats will eventually open new research pathways that grant powerful rewards.
Oh, and don’t think the human enemies are pushovers either. Now, humans deploy in unique groupings based on their faction, which includes different ranked soldiers: a boss, officers, and lower-ranked units. These squads introduce specific tactical modifiers that change how you engage them in combat.
These are just some of what you can expect in the open beta happening right now, with many other surprises and changes awaiting players. And best of all, the Phoenix Rising team has made it easy to toggle the different features on or off so you can tailor the game to your preferred playstyle!

It’s the final countdown, people: We’re headed towards our last update for Phoenix Point, “Hastur,” with our most requested community feature: Steam Workshop mod support.
With this final update, we’ll be opening up Steam Workshop for the community to share their creations and make it easy for any player to enable and subscribe to player-made mods. As an added feature that’s part of our mod integration, each mod can be tweaked by players to finely tune the right balance for their intended game.
To get things started on the right foot, we’re releasing an example mod alongside the Workshop launch that we’re currently calling “Custom Campaign.” This mod will demonstrate what creators can do with modding, while also allowing a greater degree of customization when it comes to kicking off your campaigns such as:
Our programming team has worked very hard to make modding work because we are excited to see what the community brings to the table for Phoenix Point - and for everybody to experience the existing mods that can now be brought over to Steam.
On a separate note: next Thursday, July 21st, we will combine all Phoenix Point content into one Complete Edition bundle on PC. If you already own Year One Edition and the Expansion Pass, don’t despair; you’re not missing out on any additional content, but for those looking to jump in for the first time or upgrade, this will be the definitive way to get all Phoenix Point content with a single purchase.

The recent Kaos Engines expansion was the final piece of add-on DLC for XCOM-style strategy game Phoenix Point, but it didn't mark the end of the line for new features and updates. Snapshot Games says Steam players can expect official mod support to arrive this summer, along with official Steam Workshop integration.
Modding is already possible in Phoenix Point - there's a hub over on Nexus Mods that's got some good ones, in fact. However, modders will have a lot more power to change and add to the game with official tools in hand, which means both the selection and scope of what's available should grow significantly once they're released.
"We will share more details about how mods will work in the future, but we wanted to congratulate the modding community for the work they've already done and look forward to seeing what other mod creators will do when the official support is released," Snapshot writes in a recent update. The developers even highlight the Better Classes mod by the Phoenix Rising Team, which reworks and tweaks the skill trees for all seven Phoenix Point classes.

Having more than 800,000 people play our game is something we never dreamed of when we first came up with the idea for Phoenix Point, and we are deeply grateful to all that have taken the time to suggest improvements, tell their friends, and play the game on so many platforms over these last few years. We’ve done our best to include as many of your suggestions as possible; you have made this game so much better than it ever would have been without you.
While Kaos Engines is the last of our downloadable content drops, we will continue to work on some final patches to improve Phoenix Point, including today’s Azathoth v1.14.3 update for PC. As of today, we’re closing our dedicated feedback portal (Canny) but rest assured that we have captured and backed up all the feedback shared to date, which will be used for guidance on future patches. And don’t worry: if you’d still like to give feedback, you can use the forums or talk with us on Discord. We may not be able to act on it, but we’ll see it.
We’re also excited to announce that true Mod support on PC, including official Steam Workshop integration, is coming to Phoenix Point this summer.
We will share more details about how mods will work in the future, but we wanted to congratulate the modding community for the work they’ve already done and look forward to seeing what other mod creators will do when the official support is released. We have resolved a critical issue with corrupted save files where entering or completing a tactical mission would result in lost Geoscape progress. When starting a tactical mission, if you receive the following error message about a failed save game:
“An error has occurred while overwriting the save file! Please make sure you have enough free memory on your device.”

Hello, Operatives! Our latest DLC, Kaos Engines, is now available, alongside the free Azathoth content update (patch notes at the bottom of this post). If you’re looking for more detail as to what’s in store, we shared insights on the new vehicle and module upgrades previously, but what’s just as important is how you acquire them. As we mentioned before, an independent haven, the Kaos Syndicate, calls the shots on this new research and they don’t give these tools away for free!
To take advantage of Kaos technology, players can access the Syndicate Marketplace haven, where new weapons, the unique Kaos Buggy, and all vehicle upgrades can be acquired for a price. Every 24 hours, the Marketplace refreshes its goods, and while the costs may initially be high, currying favor with their leader by taking on missions will reduce prices and put more options on offer. There are four story missions, each revolving around a particular vehicle the Syndicate’s leader wants you to recover, but even after the DLC missions are completed, the Marketplace remains open for business to offer research completed by the major factions as well as its exclusive weaponry.
Kaos Engines adds five new weapons: a sniper rifle, assault rifle, handgun, shotgun, and heavy autocannon which are only available via the Syndicate Marketplace. While these can’t be manufactured, these guns do not require ammunition, similar to the Living Weapons DLC gear. Armed with these weapons, players can deal increased damage that can include exotic effects, such as poisoning targets or causing acid damage… but, naturally, there’s a catch.
The Syndicate’s leader is a talented engineer, but his dedication towards developing more powerful weaponry has led to a complete disregard for safety, giving Kaos weapons the tendency to malfunction in a spectacular manner. The more a weapon is used, the higher the chance it may malfunction, destroying the weapon and causing different effects to the operative wielding it. But don’t despair, there’s a warning on weapons heading into a critical state for those too timid to roll the dice!
Alongside the release of Kaos Engines is our next free content update, Azathoth, which includes some balance changes that will affect the game whether you own the DLC or not. A few differences players will notice out the gate are increased material and research rewards from Geoscape exploration and encounter events, alongside an increase in materials when completing research. We believe these economic changes may help players who find themselves a little starved for resources. And for those looking for some love around the “Good Boy” mutogs, we’re reducing their deployment cost to two slots in an aircraft, making them a more viable option for future missions.
Oh and one more thing for the free Azathoth update… infiltrators can scavenge for an all-new Kaos Syndicate-themed skin when starting a new game with the code, KAOTIC. Use the key icon from the home screen to access.

Its leader, the Maker, has been tinkering away creating his own inventive weapons of war. Now, Phoenix can take on missions for the Kaos Syndicate and acquire some of their devastating machines and upgrades for their campaign.
In Kaos Engines, players can take a brand new vehicle out for a spin on the battlefield: the Kaos Buggy. The Kaos Buggy boasts both a minigun and a grenade launcher, allowing players to swap between armaments on the fly, and while it may be made of scrap parts, the Buggy can take a beating while dishing out its own damage. And if the situation turns for the worse, the Buggy can hit the Redline and jet out of danger.
As players progress in Kaos Engines, new technology will allow further upgrades for the Buggy, making it a formidable new addition for players to leverage. Its biggest drawback? Players cannot make one of their own and they will need to be purchased directly from the Kaos Syndicate when available, so save those materials.
But the Kaos Buggy is not the only vehicular addition to the game. All-new upgrades from research are in place for all existing vehicles (the Armadillo, the Aspida, and the Scarab) that will let players swap different types of weapons and equipment based on need. Prefer a flamethrowing Armadillo or maybe an Aspida to shoot enemies from a distance? With multiple options for each vehicle, there’s plenty of choice for a particular weapon of war in Kaos Engines.
Not everything is offensive though, with hull and engine improvements that allow tougher armor (or spiked armor to damage melee attackers), increased speed, or even new abilities such as the Aspida hitting its experimental thrusters to hover to higher ground, or yes, outfitting Scarabs with caterpillar tracks to run over those pesky worms. With custom modules for weapons, engines, and hulls for every vehicle, players can tailor their machines to best fit their playstyle.
Each vehicle now also sports its own inventory, assisting operatives in the field more efficiently and making scavenging runs a bit smoother. And players can not just name, but customize their wheels in a variety of colors and armor patterns to make their rides truly unique. Plus, toggle the bonus ‘fancy’ option for some more extreme makeovers! With Kaos Engines, we hope vehicles can become more of a viable option for those that prefer to use them, but let’s get this out of the way: None of these upgrades are covered under warranty!
