You thought we were gone forever?
Coming back with a bang we present you the first new class for Jupiter Hell - the Heavy Gunner! Contrary to what you may think, this one was designed for Jupiter Hell first, and only then appeared in Jupiter Hell Classic, despite the timing :).
Quick note - currently neither Linux nor Mac version of the game will work (use "previous" branch if you need a quick JH fix) - we will try to enable the Linux branch within a few days, but the Mac version will take some time. We updated our backend to SDL3, and are in the process of updating our renderer to SDL3_gpu as well (that's why we're OpenGL only for now) - once that is done we will be able to support all platforms again, but it is a bit of work. We apologize for the inconvenience!
Second note - while the translations were overhauled from the last release (especially the Japanese one), the new content isn't translated yet. We hope to fix this in the near future!
== Heavy Gunner ==
NEW #1905 - new class - Heavy Gunner!
The definite hero of this patch, the Heavy Gunner comes with a majority of brand new traits, including 5 brand new MASTER traits, an interesting class skill, and opening up significantly different playstyles than our other 3 classes!
To tempt you to jump in, I'll list the Master traits - Firefly, Nuclear Coil, Trench Warrior, Meatgrinder, and Ablative Armor. Joining them are new traits - Heavy Handed, Concussion, Armorer, Grenadier, Reclaimer, Bullet Rain and Flare.
== Perk upgades ==
NEW #1933 - weapon ADV perk values now randomized!
CHANGE #1933 - Sustain perk on melee weapons repairs armor on kill
CHANGE #1933 - Retaliate and High Explosive perk buffed
CHANGE #1933 - Swap Harness will only naturally roll on Explosives
CHANGE #1933 - Cleaner, Zombiebane and Mechabane buffs increased
CHANGE #1933 - Stabilized perk can roll on Shotguns instead of Rotaries
CHANGE #1933 - Critical chance balance - JS 15->10, mod 25->20, AV 25->30
CHANGE #1891 - IDR and MDF melee weapons have a separate manufacturer perk
CHANGE #1914 - several weaker weapon/armor perks slightly improved
In an attempt to make drops more fun, we've randomized and increased the range of the values you can get from AV weapons found in the wild, buffed several unexciting ones and adjusted what can appear where. Sustain, IDR and MDF perks have a dedicated effect on meleee weapons now.
== UI/Engine upgrades ==
NEW #1594 - item details window!
NEW #1546 - SDL3 used as the backend, currently OpenGL only (other backends soonish)
CHANGE #1594 - item details window includes better progression info for uniques
CHANGE #1556 - mod perk picker lists all possible perks along with required WK level
CHANGE #1909 - Technician power drop is drop-animated like other items
There's a new item details window, that will both solve the issue of multiple perks cluttering the equipment stats, and also give you more information including stats that are usually hidden (like critical damage). I think many people will also enjoy the expanded mod application interface listing all perks including ones that require higher WK levels.
Finally as mentioned before, significant backend changes are in progress too so report all issues!
CHANGE #1936 - minor buffs - AP SMG, torrent SMG, JAC SMG, riot SMG
CHANGE #1936 - nailgun and super nailgun marked as not auto-reloadable
You get a buff, you get a buff, everyone gets a buff! We went through the entire exotic/unique item list and buffed a lot of the unexciting items. Some of the buffs are pretty significant so keep an eye in-game!
== Gameplay changes ==
CHANGE #1889 - Fireangel hits now reduce enemy fire resistance before applying Burning
CHANGE #1914 - exalted ADAPTIVE nerfed - max 90% resistance, twice as fast decay
CHANGE #1897 - exalted DAMAGEGATE keyword added
CHANGE #1889 - on_area_damage (like Fireangel effect) now works with beam/rail weapons
CHANGE #1914 - buffed damage of rail and launcher weapons
CHANGE #0000 - plasma shotgun crit damage 50->25
CHANGE #0000 - added some guaranteed non-blade melee weapons to the episodes
CHANGE #0000 - added some guaranteed cell weapons to IO
These are more general balance changes, including one very significant to absolute endgame play - the reign of terror of the ADAPTIVE trait is over.
== Level changes ==
CHANGE #1914 - MDF Central manuf. station gets an extra charge per clearance > 1
CHANGE #1914 - Valhalla shutdown warden now costs one card instead of two
CHANGE #1914 - Valhalla has a new terminal option and better potential rewards
CHANGE #1914 - Anomaly can randomly get better rewards the higher the attunement is
CHANGE #1914 - Anomaly Warlock relics no longer have XP penalties
CHANGE #1914 - improved Military Barracks rewards
CHANGE #1914 - improved Refueling Base rewards
CHANGE #1914 - slightly improved Lock and Warehouse rewards
CHANGE #1914 - The Rift has 2 less multitools
You'll notice balance changes directed at branch rewards here. We're trying hard to make the choice of branch meaningfull and prevent having a set meta of branch choices. Keep us in the loop if you think some branches are still underwhelming, or "mandatory".
== Bugfixes ==
FIX #1546 - FMOD updated to newest, fixes Linux issues
FIX #1924 - fixed hunker (cover_mod) having no effect against shotguns
FIX #1930 - fixed forklifts being able to block only exit path (esp L1)
FIX #1920 - fixed music reload issues in mod_mode
FIX #1916 - fixed menu music playing incorrectly after load in some cases
FIX #1926 - fixed rare stage 2 harbinger crash related to movement
FIX #1928 - hacked bots with an entry position will lose the entry position
FIX #1892 - army surplus will work with Dante ammo crates
FIX #1893 - hacked/disabled GATEKEEPER enemies lose their GATEKEEPER status
FIX #1922 - clip expanded weapons will now be properly found with a full mag
FIX #1927 - unlocked locked doors become destructible again
FIX #1914 - Furious will properly stack with Bloodrush
FIX #0000 - fixed Callisto L2 not being able to generate unique items
FIX #0000 - fixed Bloodrush not stacking with other adrenaline damage boosts
FIX #0000 - fixed Shadowcloak UI and values
FIX #0000 - fixed Io intro message grammar
FIX #0000 - fixed JAC bleed affinity
FIX #0000 - fixed crash related to too many permanents (mod only issue)
FIX #0000 - fixed issues related to too long mod paths (mod only issue)
And finally what would be a patch without a juicy list of bugfixes? We fixed a lot of issues, including some long running ones, so hopefully the game will be more stable and enjoyable for everyone!
== Raw changelog ==

== What's next ==
As the cadence of JH updates won't be too often, we'd still like a yearly content update to be a thing. Next version will be either 2.0 Ascension, or 1.10 Aftermath. Yes, there's still more stuff we want to add, and definitely not a single version, but the updates will be now a bit more spaced out :).
In the meantime, do check out Jupiter Hell Classic, it's cooking nicely for a 1.0 release this summer, and already has a Heavy class, but quite different from the JH one!

The new Fanatical Favorites Bundle lets you choose your games from a selection of 20 top titles, including ChaosForge's Steam hit Jupiter Hell, a stylish, demonic shooter game that draws heavily from the Doom series. If you've been looking for your next fix after Doom: The Dark Ages, this bundle is well worth a look, as Jupiter Hell is one of many games that can scratch that particular itch, with others including the gory FPS, Perish. The best part? The more games you pick for your bundle, the bigger the discount you get.

Jupiter Hell Classic is an old-school beast - a tactical, tile-based roguelike forged from the legacy of DoomRL and reborn into the Jupiter Hell universe. It brings back the core combat you know from Jupiter Hell - raw, unfiltered, and twice as merciless - but with a few new moves you'll want to test for yourself.
Whether you’ve been counting tiles since the ’90s, or just wanna see how games used to kick ass before they put on makeup and went 3D - time to see what you’re made of. Lock, load, and go for that demo.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3126530/Jupiter_Hell_Classic/ No cutscenes. No fluff. Just you, your guns, and a kill count visible from orbit. Built for the faithful. Brutal by design.
P.S. What about Jupiter Hell itself, I hear you ask? Well, something's cooking too. Whispers speak of 1.9 being tested on Discord — but if anyone asks, it wasn’t us who told you!

Hello Hyperstrangers
Last year we announced Hordes of Hunger, our own spin on the survivorslike genre. Today, we are happy to share with you the very first public playable demo of Hordes of Hunger and of course we wouldn’t be ourselves, if we did not put a bit of strangeness into the original formula.
Two hauntingly beautiful maps, each overrun by the Beast’s minions and guarded by a horrific boss.
Dynamic combat system that blends the traditional survivorslike scale with arena-slasher's visceral action.
Over 6 side-stories and tasks to undertake. Will you save the few last remaining citizens or focus on gathering supplies from the abandoned city - the choice and consequences are yours.
Sprawling hub to which you will triumphantly return with each victor or be dragged to with each defeat. In this safe space various NPC reside, ready to help you prepare for the next battle and share their thoughts.
10 servants of the Beats to slay or be slain by. Each with their own strengths and weaknesses to exploit. Such as the immense strength and uncontrolled rage of the Teeth Golem which often makes it as deadly to you as to everything close to it.
Two weapons and weapons arts to master. Hew and cut through with the grace of the blade or crush down all opposition the brute force the hammer.
Create your own build from 5 distinct skill trees and over 30 unique skills. Ignite a fire aura, charge up a lighting storm or summon aid to the battlefield.
Get a taste of the depth of the between run progress system.

Just when you thought it was safe, 1.8 "Abattoir" is out!
== Ossuary, Abattoir and expanded Dante! ==
NEW #1862 - new Dante branch - Ossuary!
NEW #1863 - new Dante branch special - Abattoir!
NEW #1864 - new Dante branch Abattoir boss!
NEW #1839 - new Dante enemy variant - frost guardian!
NEW #1868 - Dante has its own station variants!
NEW #1494 - new lootbox models for Dante
NEW #1858 - Dante is now 5 levels deep!
CHANGE #1520 - minor visual improvements of Dante
CHANGE #1570 - improved Dante Inferno rewards
CHANGE #1847 - visibility of Dante crates improved for less bumpin'
This is the meat (heh), of the update - a brand new branch for Dante, with a new mechanic, a new special level and a very interesting and scary boss. Do treat this as a victory lap - the boss fight might prove more difficult than the regular boss, but gives a medal (with a whopping 500 points) to brag about it, kinda "full win" style!
There are several minor improvements (everyone will enjoy the increased visibility of barrels), with new Dante stations with their own set of options, and dedicated lootbox models (yes, terminals will come soon too!).
Length of the main branch has been expanded by one, Inferno rewards have been slightly improved and there's a new Guardian variant to boot!
== Scouts and shotguns ==
CHANGE #1847 - Scouts now start with 3 weapon slots too
CHANGE #1831 - all shotguns apply Slowdown (-50% move speed) for 1.5s
CHANGE #1831 - most shotguns now have 0.75 swap time
Scout 2 weapon slot setup was thematic, but it did restrict the variety of his gameplay. We're eyeing changing his Hoarder trait too in the next patch, but for now he can enjoy the newly greatly buffed shotguns.
== Early game improvements ==
NEW #1703 - CAL L2 boon - either T2 speial chest or terminal procure!
NEW #1859 - CAL L1 - two new intro level generators
CHANGE #1850 - minor improvements to Callisto level generators
More variety in the L1 levels that you've all played to death! Additionally small improvements in Callisto all around, and a special reward in Callisto L2 - a special chest on the first 3 difficulties, or a Terminal procure option on UV+ for less reliance on RNG for the most important items!
== Gauntlet and Conduct medals ==
NEW #1871 - new trial - the Gauntlet!
NEW #1559 - 21 new medals in 7 new "nethack-style conducts" series!
Here's one for the madmen. A new trial, the ultimate challenge, the Gauntlet. A fixed weekly seed for you to compete against other player. Same map, same spawns, same items, same punishing and extremely quickly scaling difficulty. Expect to die.
Additionally, the game now recognizes some conducts - playing without using medkits, multitools, armors, masteries, etc, not unlike the old and loved NetHack conducts (anyone old enough to remember those? :P). See Medals section in player data for details. You get partial credit, so if you maintain a conduct for a bigger part of the game you still get recognized for it!
== Exalted enemies ==
NEW #1846 - 6 brand new exalted keywords!
CHANGE #1830 - exalted RESIST split to IMMUNE and RESIST
CHANGE #1830 - LETHAL and DEADLY can no longer appear together
CHANGE #1830 - UNSTABLE removed from the non-exalted Inferno pool
FIX #1830 - fixed exalted fiends/ravagers with double ranged weapons
Following the theme of catering to the endgame players, we provide some much needed variety and balance (and a vital fix!) in exalted keywords. Some of the new ones are really flashy!
== Japanese translation ==
NEW #1791 - Japanese translation!
Japanese has been added to the list of available languages. Please note that the translation was done against 1.7, so there are some texts still missing - we will update them soon(ish)! We're eager to hear feedback on the translation!
== Other stuff ==
NEW #1843 - new accessibility option - object outlines
NEW #1354 - added and improved skill and kit FX
CHANGE #0000 - FXAA only active on highest shader level
CHANGE #0000 - AWP git gud capped at +200%
While Dante barrels, the worst offender, are now easier to spot, if you want your furniture to be even more visible, you'll enjoy the new outline option. We've added some sweet FX where needed too! Finally AWP got a slight nerf, mostly because it made Endless extremely boring (it's still quite boring, but we'll get to that next release!).
== Plethora of fixes ==
FIX #1825 - prevent Stage 3 boss from flying away too far
FIX #1878 - fixed menu keys being stuck in loop
FIX #1877 - fixed languages menu multipling in mod mode
FIX #1866 - watcher effects will trigger even if watcher can't take action
FIX #1866 - watchers won't watch themselves
FIX #1801 - fixed potential crash on Steam Deck save and quit
FIX #0000 - fixed Deadly Precision abbreviation
FIX #0000 - fixed Supply/Proto mixup in one Asterius breach version
FIX #0000 - fixed offscreen emitters being shortly visible at creation
FIX #0000 - fixed rendering of tiled textures (spaceport, altar)
FIX #0000 - fixed Carnage found bullet count
Several fixes have been made, not all of them on this list. The three major ones are probably the fixes to Watcher AI, the Steam Deck crash fix (hopefully works!) and the Boss fight head flying away instead of fighting like a ... head.

== What's next ==
Yes, this version was supposed to be "Aftermath". Next version will surely be :P. Expect more Dante and Callisto improvements and who knows, maybe finally a new class?
Hyperstrangers! Dreamhack Beyond is right around the corner, Dudes, and you guessed it - we are in it! However, this bit of news isn’t just about that. While you are keeping up with all news related to Jupiter Hell, we would like to showcase other things we have been cooking for

Dreamhack Beyond is right around the corner, Dudes, and you guessed it - we are in it! However, this bit of news isn’t just about that. While you are keeping up with all news related to Jupiter Hell, we would like to showcase other things we have been cooking for your gaming pleasure!
But, but, but... before these beauties will be ready to be injected into your veins, you gotta follow and wishlist. It makes the algorithm gods happy and jolts our developers’ hearts with joyful exuberance - whatever that means.
CosmoPirates
Space, the final frontier, a place devoid of the tight-ass bureaucracy. A place where a man can cruise in their Fiat 126p, lick batteries, and be a self-made cosmonaut! Unless you get raided by pirates, poisoned by a hot-dog from an unlicensed food-shuttle or scammed by Kovalsky at the spaceship dealer.
CosmoPirates takes card battling, deck building to the final frontier of cartoonish comedy. Pimp-out your ride, gather your crew, and take out the cringeworthy overlord. Be wary tho, for there always must be a Cringe lord - and on your journey you might just become one.
There are some things that simply go great together although you wouldn’t think so: potatoes and pizza, mayo and ketchup or Zombies and Golf! That’s right! There is nothing more riveting than trying to land a perfect birdie with a horde of the ravenous undead breathing down your neck.
In NecroGolf, an arcade golf simulator with RPG elements and zombies, you can put your precision golfing to the test. NecroGolf releases in less than a month, on September 15th, so make sure to wishlist it, grab your clubs and get in your golf cart, for in this zombie apocalypse, there is only golf.
If you are in for even more Hyperstrangeness, then embark in 77p egg: Eggwife on a quest whose crude, gory, toilet-humor can only be rivaled by games such as Postal 2, Duke 3D, or Goat Simulator.Master your bodily functions to perform such feats as poop-jumping and employ a wide range of "UK-Legal'' weapons such as the Applicator, Crossbowner and Stigmatic 77,000!
Does this masterpiece have a story? Yes, and a relatable one at that. Building a stable relationship isn’t that easy and our protagonist will need your help on his quest to find a new wife!
Let’s step down from the joyful sensory overload of the above mentioned games to something a little bit different. Something less strange and definitely more hyper.
In Empty Shell, a top-down roguelite survival horror, you will get thrown into a secret facility on a Japanese island. Having signed a contract which stated only one condition “recover the designated target”, you will soon learn why it is so important to read the fine print.
During each run, you will try to get the “volunteer” through the facility while dealing with limited visibility, dwindling supplies and whatever is out there, stalking and hunting you throughout the randomized maze of tight-corridors.
If you are peckish and looking for something more crunchy to stimulate your strategic mind, then look no further than Spirit of Liberty, a hardcore, turn-based, historically accurate strategy game set in WWII.
Master the intricacies of the game’s systems to keep your units supplied and armed with the best equipment and dismantle enemy forces through combined-arms tactics and help from your cabinet of generals.
As tradition commands, we have saved the best for the dessert! Hope you're still hungry for here comes our most ambitious in-house project so far.
Hordes of Hunger is a fast-paced action arena slasher with roguelite elements set in the dark fantasy setting of Ismer. A land engulfed by the living hunger, the cosmic horror known only as the Beast. You are the unlucky one still living inside the nightmare and the only way out is through it.

NEW #0012 - Modding/Steam Workshop support!
NEW #1803 - modmode has been added for modding purposes
Head to Steam Workshop now, as there are already a few mods waiting to be tried out, including Hellpedia, several challenges and a new class to boot!
To those interested in trying their hand themselves, we're slowly building up documentation [here - https://github.com/chaosforgeorg/jh-mods/wiki/] (also serves as a repo for the sample mods) and the best place to ask questions is (as usual) the Jupiter Hell Discord ( https://discord.gg/jupiterhell ).
== Early Game ==
NEW #1391 - early game - 4 exotic weapons, 1 consumable, 1 armor
NEW #1756 - flavor e-mails with branch mechanics spoilers
CHANGE #1799 - EXPT'L - enemies deal 60% damage on EASY (but full acc)
We're constantly trying to improve the early game experience, adding new content and variety. This time we have new early game exotic weapons, a nova device and a new exotic armor. We also introduced new flavor e-mails (gray) in each moon branch that give hints to the nature of the branch mechanics.
Finally, a bit experimentally, we changed how EASY difficulty works - instead of reducing enemy accurancy, we instead reduced enemy damage. The reason behind this change is that being hit is the most important feedback you get in terms of whether you play properly, so EASY was not a great teacher to get to higher difficulties. Feedback on this change is very welcome!
== Tier 2 and 3 Stations ==
NEW #1804 - tech and med stations have tier 2 and 3 variants
Medical and technical stations come in Tier 2 and Tier 3 varieties. There's quite a few never before seen options in those stations so be on the lookout! Mostly they can appear in mini-levels and vaults.
== Quality of Life ==
NEW #1794 - all post mortems are archived in morgue subfolder
NEW #1795 - post mortems can be viewed from highscore screen
CHANGE #1776 - charge based terminals return to last option after use
CHANGE #1793 - backup of score.dat and player.dat if > 1024b
CHANGE #1798 - in Purgatory only the glyph room blocks save and quit
Post mortems got a bit of upgrades. From now on they're all archived in a subfolder of the games folder. You can also view them from the score screen for mortems created from now on. We also added a backup system for score and player dat files. If you accidentaly lose one of them, be sure to quickly recover them from a .backup file. These will not be overwritten immedately, only after a game or two, so you have time!
== Balance ==
CHANGE #1799 - buffed damage of all shotguns
CHANGE #1789 - all rotaries got a damage buff and -25% crit damage
CHANGE #1789 - drum launcher and grenade launcher damage nerf
CHANGE #1789 - Gun Kata - crit damage from lev 1, +100% at lev 3
CHANGE #1783 - most ancient items got significant buffs
CHANGE #1391 - higher level infestations (Endless) will be more varied
CHANGE #1391 - medusa infestations added
As usual, here's the new meta :P. On a more serious note - only the grenade launchers were seriously overperforming (especially looking at you, drum launcher) so a nerf was inevitable. JoviSec armor was a bit to strong, taking away variety in Callisto branch choice and often locking the armor for the whole run. We still want it to be strong, just not OP.
To make up for that, several other things have been significantly buffed - all rotaries, all shotguns, Gun Kata, ancient items and SysOp. Hopefully that increases the variety of stuff that is viable for a run!
Finally, for those Endless players, and just because we have a cruel streak, Medusa infestations are a thing now.
== Bugfixes ==
FIX #1775 - fixed performance issues in Callisto Rift
FIX #1775 - don't add exalted traits to player on INFERNO
FIX #1805 - fixed rare AV trait reroll issue - no more trait remove
The regular amount of bugfixes is also present, some not noted on this list.

Next version will be the Aftermath release, due to sometime still this year, which should bring any requested modding improvements, endgame and Dante Station improvements, and maybe more - stay tuned!
Also, we're working on... can we say it Hyperstrange? (Yes, you can! --HS) Can we? Yeah, the first port of Jupiter Hell. Expect a Nintendo Switch release at the turn of the year ;).
