The launch of RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic on the Nintendo Switch caps off an eventful year for the RCT franchise. In March 2024, Atari began a year-long celebration marking the 25th anniversary of Chris Sawyer’s iconic creation. Since then, the company has unveiled a number of RollerCoaster Tycoon merchandise and apparel collaborations, re-released RCT Classic for Android, rolled out significant expansions for the mobile title RCT Touch, and reacquired RCT 3 from Frontier, reuniting it with the franchise's catalog.

For a game with such a sterling reputation, it’s amazing that it wasn’t mentioned during any Nintendo Directs or given any kind of fanfare. Regardless of how it got there, it’s finally here, and that’s pretty cool on its own.
I’ve mentioned in the past that RollerCoaster Tycoon was one of two games I was allowed to have on my computer back in the early 2000s. Despite being a soft-brained 12-year-old and having almost no capacity for sim games, I always enjoyed its unique gameplay and distinctive charm. I’m not exaggerating when I say I probably haven’t revisited RollerCoaster Tycoon in decades, and the Switch version has definitely left me with mixed feelings.

Last December, RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic—a remaster of 1999's RollerCoaster Tycoon—launched on mobile devices. Tomorrow, it arrives on Steam. Remastered by series creator Chris Sawyer, RCT Classic aims to "combine the best features" from the 18-year old original and its succes

Remastered by series creator Chris Sawyer, RCT Classic aims to "combine the best features" from the 18-year old original and its successor RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. And it comes with the game's Toolkit, Wacky Worlds and Time Twister expansions in tow.

Speaking to those expansions, Wacky Worlds adds an extra 17 park scenarios to the base game, as well as famous landmark pavilions—Big Ben, the Statue of Liberty, etc.—each with its own specific challenges. Time Twister adds 14 scenarios based around historical and/or fantasy themes; while Toolkit offers up a Park Scenario Editor.
If the latter is your cup of tea, this story from Michael Koczwara about an RCT player's ten-year quest to build the perfect theme park is fascinating.
