Square Enix’s experiment in licensing fan-made, crowdfunded sequels to old games they own today emerges from its bunker for the first time with the launch of Fear Effect Sedna. It’s a supernatural stealth shooter following up on Kronos Digital Entertainment’s old Fear Effect games from the PlayStation. Sedna is actually a sequel to the original Fear Effect from the year 2000, though it does tinker with ye olde structure a little in going from that fixed-camera survival horror to more of a top-down shooter style. For those who grew up through the PlayStation 1 era, it was hard not to at least be vaguely aware of the Fear Effect series. Despite their genre roots lying in survival horror, awkward camera angles and all, their mix of stylish comic-style visuals, cornball sci-fi/supernatural espionage stories (with zombies, sometimes) and famously tacky ad campaigns helped the series stand out.
On March 6th, the series officially returns as Fear Effect Sedna, from Studio Sushee. Despite being a true sequel set four years after the PlayStation original, it’s metamorphosed into a real-time-with-pause squad tactics game somewhere along the way.

Sedna, from French developer Sushee and published by Square Enix Collective, launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC priced 15.99 / $19.99 / €19.99. It is a new chapter in the series co-written by Fear Effect's original writer, John Zuur Platten, and stars series stalwarts Hana, Rain, Glas and Deke as well as a new character called Axel. The action is presented in a third-person isometric viewpoint. Expect stealth, puzzles and the classic death cutscenes from the original games.
Sushee is also working on Fear Effect Reinvented, a remaster of the original game. Reinvented is also in development for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

If you owned a PS1 you might remember Fear Effect, a stylish horror shooter that became something of a cult classic. French developer Sushee are trying to tap into that nostalgia with a complete remake of the game called Fear Effect Reinvented as well as a real-time tactics spin-off called Fear Effect Sedna.
The remake is coming next year, and now Sushee have announced that Fear Effect Sedna is too: "early" in 2018, in fact, although there's no release date yet. It marks a slight delay for the title, which was supposed to be out by the end of this year.
So, what do we know about the game so far? It's an isometric tactics game where you'll be able to switch between characters on the fly and plan moves in advance while slowing down time. You'll be dual wielding weapons, stunning enemies and solving tough puzzles.
In terms of the story, it's an international romp packed with assassinations and shady organisations that reunites the team from the original game—Hana, Rain, Deke and Glas.
Sushee has finished its final build of the game but it's working with the indie team at Square Enix to get it over the line, testing it and ironing out any kinks.
You can see some early prototype footage released during development below. It's not the finished product, but I think it still looks decent. There's a free demo available on Steam.

Sony scallywags might remember Fear Effect, the horror shooter that came out on the PSone a full 17 years ago. Quite good, it was, and now it’s getting a remake. Named Fear Effect Reinvented, it’s coming to PC in 2018. If you never played the original, I’ll explain you control three mercenaries shooting and rolling their way through Hong Kong in search of a triad boss’s daughter, who they intend to kidnap and ransom, when events turn a bit supernatural.
The remake is a collaboration between Square Enix’s Collective indie scheme and developers Sushee, who are also working on real-time tactics spin-off Fear Effect: Sedna. The team want the remake to stay “as close as possible” to the original Fear Effect, keeping the gameplay and story but updating the graphics and tank controls.

It was well received but also generated an enduring cult following, with many players expecting more beyond its 2001 Retro Helix follow-up at the time.
This wasn't to be, sadly, however French indie outfit Sushee—the studio behind Goetia—returned to the series via Kickstarter last year with Fear Effect Seda, an isometric tactical adventure game that echoes the PS1 classic.

As of today, Fear Effect Sedna also has a free demo which can be downloaded over here.
Having played through the first 15 minutes or so, I assumed control of both Hana and Rain and was able to switch between the two protagonists at will. Individually and collectively I took down gangs of hostile thugs, making use of the game's dual-wield weapons, stun guns and slow-motion mechanic that allows you to map attacks on the fly ahead of time.
This update post reckons there's 30 minutes of stuff in there—"not an early prototype: the actual demo"—however I came a cropper to a bomb defusal puzzle that I couldn't work out the solution to. As I say, I only poked my head into the demo and I dare say I was overlooking something obvious. Nonetheless, Sushee suggest the game's puzzles are "challenging" and that we should "prepare to fail!"
No concrete launch date just yet, but Fear Effect Sedna is due later this year.
