Air combat, exploration and more await ARK Park fans ready for their next adventure
We are proud to announce that the first DLC for our multiplayer VR game ARK Park will be available by the end of June – for free! Available on all supported platforms, “Pterosaur Hill” will add tons of new content – starting with the introduction of air combat, new maps for exploration, prehistoric creatures, and more.

The “Pterosaur Hill” DLC is built around the concept of flight. Three new maps are included: Mountain Lake, Crystal Sky Lift, and Aviary. In addition to using land-based vehicles, players will now get to: float in a hot air balloon overseeing Mountain Lake; ride the Crystal Sky lift, where they can soar through the clouds; and gaze upon the majestic nest of Quetzalcoatlus – the largest prehistoric flying creature – in the Aviary.

As players progress through the DLC, they’ll meet more than 10 different new species – including the hawk-like Meganeura and the several-meters-long Arthropleaura millipedes. On the dinosaur front, “Pterosaur Hill” will feature the Diplodocus, Pachyrhinosaurus (a.k.a. “Pachy”), Compsognathus (a.k.a. “Compy”), Therizinosaurus, and Gallimimus. – among others. Players interested in learning about ancient creatures can pick up their gene-scanning gun once again and add to their collection!

Air Superiority
Air battles are a key component of “Pterosaur Hill.” Players will be able to hop on a Pterosaur to show off their excellent air combat skills – then traverse the treacherous Death Canyon to find the nest of a fire-breathing dragon. “Pterosaur Hill” also features new weapons and items to spice up combat. For instance, players will be able to equip a Tachi sword to slash away at overly aggressive dinos (the precursor to the katana) and a powerful shotgun perfect for dispatching large numbers of enemies.

ARK Park and this week’s PixArk are the next two installments in the blockbuster ARK series
March 22nd, publisher and developer Snail Games hosted game industry thought leaders, media outlets, and VIPs at Jillian's San Francisco to celebrate the global launch of ARK Park on SteamVR, PSVR, Oculus Rift, Viveport, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. With more than 80 guests in attendance, the event put the spotlight on the future of the popular ARK franchise with its first VR release, ARK Park. Highlights from the event included a live demo of PixARK and a heartfelt video featuring Snail Games vice president Tianqi "Sky" Wu and a loving family's struggle with autism.
Sky’s Journey
While ARK Park was in development, the team in charge received a very special request: A father from Eastbourne, UK – Craig Proctor – asked for a pre-release copy of the game to share with his autistic son, Jason (who happens to adore dinosaurs). Craig believed that being able to walk among those majestic creatures would lift Jason’s spirits and give him a whole new perspective on life. Snail Games was happy to oblige ... and the result is captured in “ARK Park Makes Dreams Come True”:

“We take VR very seriously. What we have here is technology that can truly change the world,” says Tianqi “Sky” Wu, vice president at Snail Games. “It was my great pleasure to be able to make the trip to England – bringing with me a VR headset and a copy of ARK Park to show our newest and possibly youngest fan at eight years old. The love and affection I witnessed left a lasting impression on me – and seeing Jason play the game we worked so hard on filled my heart with joy.”
The video was the centerpiece in a very busy afternoon at perennial GDC hangout Jillian’s San Francisco, which has just emerged from a stunning renovation. Snail Games director Peter Kang kicked things off with an in-depth presentation on ARK Park – and he also discussed upcoming downloadable content and feature updates currently in development. Peter was followed by Studio Wildcard co-founders Jeremy Stieglitz and Jesse Rapczak – who announced that ARK: Survival Evolved has sold over 13 million copies and then proceeded to give the audience a live demo of the ARK franchise’s newest installment, PixArk, where “Death by Velociraptor” was just around the corner.
Jeremy and Jesse also made the “Dino Export” feature public for the first time, which allows ARK: Survival Evolved owners to export their dinosaurs to ARK Park. The appearance, color, and age of each dinosaur are all seamlessly synced – allowing players to “meet” their loyal companions and check their stats face-to-face in virtual reality. More than 10 types of dinosaurs are currently supported on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive; support for PSVR is coming soon – with more “exportable” dino types in the works as well.
Snail Games vice president Tianqi “Sky” Wu was next – showcasing the video of his trip to England. He was followed by art director Guohan Tan, who further explored the magical world of ARK Park through his unique take on the franchise. Peter Kang was back for closing comments.
“ARK Park – like the baby dinos in the game – is in its infancy. VR fans are now getting their first taste of this massive new addition to the ARK franchise,” says Peter Kang, director at Snail Games. “If you want more content in ARK Park, I can tell you one thing: It’s coming. This is an incredibly exciting time for us, and we can’t wait to show gamers what the future holds for them.”

ARK Park, in case the name (not to mention the headline above) doesn't make it clear, is an Ark: Survival Evolved offshoot. Announced last year, it's a fairly laid back museum-like affair where you can wander around and gawk at prehistoric beings. Or is it? Apparently there will be some "hardcore" elements too, if this news story from last year is still accurate.
Anyway, the game now has an official release date, that being March 22. It'll launch for both Vive and Oculus Rift (not to mention PSVR), and is handled by a third-party studio, Snail Games.
"Designed from the ground up as a stunningly realistic dinosaur theme park simulation, ARK Park allows players to freely traverse the grounds without any restrictions whatsoever," so reads the description. "There’s no set plot or schedule to follow; you can choose how and where to go next at all times – exploring the prehistoric park at your own pace."
The Steam page is here, and a trailer is embedded below.

We're probably a few decades from experiencing something like Jurassic Park in real life—which I'm okay with considering the body count those movies rack up. Judging by this reveal of the gameplay footage, Ark Park looks to be the next best thing. Developed independently by Snail Games, Ark Park lets you explore and interact with dinos in a variety of Jurassic climates all from the comfort of your VR goggles. Snail Games invited members of Studio Wildcard, the original developers of Ark: Survival Evolved, to see how Ark Park is shaping up.
Ark Park takes the learning experience beyond the textbook through allowing players to get up close and personal with the dinosaurs.
"Our vision is to create a virtual world where players can explore at their own place and have close encounters with dinosaurs," executive producer Sky Wu tells me. While the game lacks the ever-present danger of Ark: Survival Evolved, that doesn't mean it's a completely passive tour either. "A hard core survival game like Ark: Survival Evolved is too fast paced for VR and might result in discomfort, but we still want core gamers that loved Ark: Survival Evolved to enjoy Ark Park. What we decided to do was make both options available. For core gamers, the game features dinosaur hunting and some hidden elements that are a bit more challenging while the game allows casual players to just hangout, ride, feed dinosaurs and enjoy the view. Overall, Ark Park falls in the casual game category with some optional hardcore elements."
Watching the video, you can see there's a lot more to Ark Park than just gawking at lizards and telling them what nice boys they are. What's more, you don't have to do it alone. "In Ark Park, there will be single and multiplayer modes," Wu says. "Players will embark on excursions and enter different attractions where they will see different prehistoric creatures and plants. A core gameplay element will include collecting gene cubes from dinosaurs, allowing players to develop their own 'petting zoos.'"
But there will be some light survival elements too. Wu says that Ark Park also features "hunting areas" where dinosaurs can attack the player. To survive those attacks, players will need to use their gathered gene cubes and resources to create "survival items and weapons." By unlocking new attractions in the park, they also unlock access to more cubes and crafting options. Collecting those cubes will take some clever thinking, however. For example, players will need to manipulate the environment, such as disturbing an ant nest to attract a big spider, to collect everything.
If fieldwork becomes too tiring, you can always retreat back to the visitor center where you can learn about the various creatures of Ark Park. "Ark Park takes the learning experience beyond the textbook through allowing players to get up close and personal with the dinosaurs," Wu says.
Overall, it sounds like a rather meaty experience—and lord knows that VR needs more of them. It's an interesting decision to take Ark: Survival Evolved to tamer frontiers, but dinosaurs are cool as hell so having the chance to look at them a little closer is certainly welcome. Ark Park is due later this year on both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

The feasibility of designing games for virtual reality has been questioned in recent weeks, however I'd love to see the medium used in ways which transcend the perceived norm. Peacock Studios' Ark Park is a VR experience with this in mind which has you exploring a Jurassic Park-esque world filled with over 100 dinos from Studio Wildcard's Ark: Survival Evolved.
Due next year, Ark Park is a standalone multiplayer "exploration experience" whereby sightseeing seemingly trumps violence and survival. "This interactive experience will fulfill your dreams of entering a world where living breathing dinosaurs are roaming the earth. Explore freely at this grand virtual world where there is no set plot line," reads a press release. "Engage in multiplayer tour to share the visceral gameplay and the thrill of witnessing actual dinosaurs up-close."
According to the PlayStation Blog, players will get the chance to ride around in both vehicles and on the backs of dinosaurs, while a combination of "puzzle-solving logic, action skills, exploration and careful resource management" is required to collect all 'gene cubes' strewn throughout the park—achievements of sorts which indicate successful identification of its 100+ creatures.
"Capturing a creature’s gene cube will allow for you to upload it to Ark Park’s hub area to learn more about the life form, including factoids and vital stats," says the PS Blog post. "Along with this, you’ll learn about how the Ark species have diverged from real-world variants. Gene cubes may also be uploaded to the hub’s petting zoo where visitors can get up close and personal with the creatures."
Ark Park will launch on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift in 2017.
