Making of Order of the Sinking Star: The Game Design Supercollider
Ten years after The Witness , Jonathan Blow and Thekla, Inc. set out to answer an ambitious design question: What happens when you bring together ideas from some of the most brilliant puzzle designers in the industry and put these ideas into one single and massive interconnected
Ten years after The Witness, Jonathan Blow and Thekla, Inc. set out to answer an ambitious design question: What happens when you bring together ideas from some of the most brilliant puzzle designers in the industry and put these ideas into one single and massive interconnected universe? It’s a question that led to the game design supercollider that is Order of the Sinking Star: a game that first started as an experiment -- from both a game design but also a custom game programming language perspective with the creation of “Jai”. But then, as this experiment continued, it was transformed into an incredible 10-year puzzle adventure and programming project unlike any other -- born from a desire to push puzzle game design past its traditional limits to create the largest and greatest puzzle game ever made.
What Do You Mean by Game Design Supercollider?
Instead of building from a single core concept, we created a "game design supercollider" – smashing together the ideas from multiple puzzle game designers to create a puzzle landscape that's much more intricate and vast than what has come before – with this game having a combinatoric explosion of possibilities.
Order of the Sinking Star doesn’t just have a single core concept, instead it’s a massive design experiment built in collaboration with an incredible lineup of puzzle designers, which includes but isn’t limited to:

Jonathan Blow (The Witness, Braid)
Alan Hazelden (Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes, Mirror Isles)
Sean Barrett (Promesst 1-3)
Jonah Ostroff (the Heroes of Sokoban series)
Patrick Traynor (Patrick’s Parabox)
Marc ten Bosch (Miegakure)
Zach Polansky (Enigmash)
and several others!
How Does Everything Come Together?
Rather than having isolated worlds, we built a system where distinct mechanical philosophies collision-test against one another:

Four Realms, Distinct Rules: You begin by exploring four separate domains, each with their own distinct puzzle mechanics/abilities to master, characters to meet, and secrets waiting to be uncovered.
Emergent Crossovers: As you venture deeper and continue to uncover the secrets of the Order of the Sinking Star, the worlds as you know them begin to combine. Abilities learned in one realm suddenly are shared with another, characters from the North end up meeting characters from other locations, and so much more.
For Order of the Sinking Star, what first seems to be four individual core concept ideas, ends up turning into a massive array of surprising new gameplay possibilities and hundreds of hours of gameplay! It’s a game design supercollider that makes the game a mysterious, living puzzle adventure unlike any other.
What About Jai?
There’s so much to cover when it comes to Jai, the new programming language Jonathan Blow created and that he and his team have used for the development of Order of the Sinking Star. If you’re interested, we encourage you to check out Jonathan’s previous panels where he covered details about Jai.
We know many of you programmers out there are curious if you can get your hands on Jai -- we’re happy to re-confirm that not too long after the game releases, focus will switch to the compiler, working first toward a binary release, then, eventually a source release.

We have posted a TECHNICAL UPDATE for the demo, in a beta branch. To try it, you go to the Properties for the game, go to Game Versions & Betas, and pick public-testing (no password).
Included in this version:
Optimizations for faster frame rate, especially on lower-end devices! (60fps on most levels on Steam Deck)
A new, lower-profile graphics setting "Very Performance" that can be used on these platforms to achieve these frame rates (or better battery life).
Increased compatibility with older GPUs and systems with less RAM. (Still no shader model 6.5 support, but we are looking at this).
Separate volume controls for music, sound effects and character voice
Control vsync, frame rate cap, and antialiasing mode from the Graphics submenu.
Switch the text language dynamically from the menu without having to fiddle with Steam settings ..

First of all, we’d like to thank all of you who have played the Order of the Sinking Star Demo this week already. Several of you already have completed all the available puzzles in the demo currently... well done! DEMO UPDATE OVERVIEW: NEW HEROES TO MEET, MORE PUZZLES TO SOLVE, AND MORE TO EXPLORE
Today’s update (aka Demo Part 2, as Jonathan Blow’s called it!) brings plenty of new content to the Order of the Sinking Star Demo – from new heroes to meet to new mind-bending puzzles to solve.
Below’s a quick overview of what today’s update introduces:

New Heroes – The Bard & The Druid: As you solve the intricate puzzles within the demo and unlock new areas to explore, if you progress far enough, you’ll have the chance to meet and play as two new heroes: The Bard and The Druid! With the Bard, she has the ability to charm others and even has the power to move crystals while playing music. The Druid, on the other hand, accidentally transmutes his friends and objects in his path.
A Slew of New Puzzles: For those who’ve finished the demo prior to this update, you know there were 75 puzzles in total. Well, with today’s update, even more puzzles have been added which will officially bring the demo to be over 100 puzzles! Take on the new brain-teasing puzzles – and with the new content, you’ll even have a chance to see what happens when the worlds start to collide...
New Areas to Explore & New Lore to Uncover: With new puzzles comes new areas to explore and of course, new lore to find! Experience even more of the Overworld and uncover even more secrets within Order of the Sinking Star. Will you get one step closer to deciphering this epic tale?

The Steam Next Fest demo delivers a meaningful slice of Order of the Sinking Star -- enough to challenge, surprise, and even spark theories of the game’s overarching mystery.
Below you'll find an overview of the demo, and why it’s one of the can’t-miss demos to check out during Steam Next Fest.

100+ Handcrafted Puzzles in the Demo Alone: A robust introduction to the game’s evolving mechanics and layered puzzle design. There will be over 1000 handcrafted puzzles in the full game available later this year, so this demo just scratches the surface!

One Non-Linear Overworld, Three Magical Worlds: Come and go as you like, as you enter the Overworld, explore three magical worlds and take on a slew of mind-bending puzzles at your own pace. Each world has its own rules, heroes, and challenges -- and you’ll begin to decipher the grand mystery within Order of the Sinking Star!

Progress Carries Over to Full Game: Any progress made in the demo will transfer to the full game at launch later this year, so there’s no need to worry about having to start fresh when the game’s available.

Content Update this Friday, June 19: A major update will expand the demo with even more puzzles to tackle, and you’ll even be able to experience what happens when the worlds of the game start to collide.

NVIDIA GeForce NOW Support: With the power of GeForce NOW, you can stream Order of the Sinking Star on any device and anywhere you want. Whether you’re at home or on-the-go, the world of Order of the Sinking Star is always within reach.

Play via Steam Deck: While Steam Deck Verification is still pending for the full release, the demo runs pretty smoothly on Steam Deck! Ongoing optimization will continue throughout development, with the goal for the game to be Steam Deck Verified by release.

When and where can I play the game exactly?
This public demo is part of the Steam Next Fest: June 2026 Edition, which means you’ll be able to play Order of the Sinking Star via Steam between Monday, June 15th at 10am PT (8am UTC) and Monday, June 22nd at 10am PT (8am UTC). After that, the demo will not be available any longer.
Do I need to register or sign up anywhere to play this demo?
No! All you need to do is download the demo from our Steam Store Page, and you’re ready to go!
Is the demo available worldwide or only in certain regions?
The demo is available worldwide!
Can I stream the game or share footage?
Absolutely! There is no NDA in place for this public demo, and we encourage you to stream or share your screenshots and thoughts across all channels.
What content is available to play? I heard it’s a massive demo.
That’s true, indeed! You’ll be able to take on around 110 levels in addition to parts of the overworld, which connects the different game worlds.
At first, you can explore three of the base worlds that start off the game. Then, on Friday, we'll unlock more of the demo, and you can play some of the content where the game's worlds collide!
Is a controller/gamepad required or supported?
The demo does have controller/gamepad support! That said, it can be played on mouse and keyboard or controller/gamepad -- whichever you prefer.
Are there any limits to play time?
No, you can put in as many hours as you like between Monday, June 15th at 10am PT (8am UTC) and Monday, June 22nd at 10am PT (8am UTC). Just remember to stay hydrated and get some sleep!
Will my game progress in the demo be saved for game launch?
Yes, it will! The progress you make in this demo will carry over to the launch version of Order of the Sinking Star on Steam later this year.
Is this demo available in different languages?
Yes! In addition to English, this demo is available in German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. You can change the language by right-clicking the game in your Steam Library and selecting ‘Properties’. In the following menu, navigate to the ‘General’ tab and select your desired language from the dropdown menu under ‘language’.
Please be aware that the localization of Order of the Sinking Star is still a work-in-progress at this stage of development, and you might encounter placeholder translations or untranslated content in these other languages. We’re aiming to have the game text fully localized by the time it launches later this year!
