September 25, 2026 This cycle is part of a hardening period ahead of the Alpha playtest release. The priority for Alpha is a stable experience: with systems this emergent, we cannot ship broken or stuck states to players, so the focus has shifted from new features to reliability,
One system for drama We kept deepening what happens after a crew member turns on you, but the real work this cycle was under the surface. Every dramatic beat in the game used to be its own tangle of special-case code. A betrayal did one thing, a mugging another, heat rose from a
Quick one this week, but it is one of those changes you feel in every single firefight. Until now, combat had a tell that broke the illusion. A gang member would trade shots with a rival, win, and then a half second later go right back to strolling the block like nothing happened
The Crew panel: see what your crew is doing and why Hey everyone, This one is about visibility. The game has always had a lot going on under the hood. Your crew members have priorities, plans, and conditions that gate what they can do. Until now, most of that was invisible. You'd
The map is now a real city We've been using real-world map data since the start. OpenStreetMap feeds us roads, water, parks, and building footprints when you pick a territory. What changed this week is how completely we use it. Previously, when the game loaded neighborhood data f
Two things landed this week that change how the city looks and feels. One you notice the moment you load in. The other you notice at night. It looks like a city now We've been staring at the same grey-on-grey map for months. The color palette is gone; replaced with something clos
One feature this week that has been on the list for a while: a proper difficulty setup screen. You can now tune how the game plays before you start a run. Choosing how hard you want it When you start a new game, there's now a playstyle button on the setup screen. It opens a panel
You can now pause the game There's a Pause / Play button in the top-right panel, right under the clock. Hit Pause and the simulation freezes completely - no gang ticks, no AI decisions, no world saves running in the background. The map and UI stay live so you can pan around, chec
Dev Log - Customization Hub + Combat AI Fixes CUSTOMIZATION HUB The old Asset Studio was a small sidebar panel. We've rebuilt it into a full-screen Customization Hub - three tabs, everything in one place. Visuals - swap pawn heads and weapon sprites, same as before. Sounds - two
The problem Money laundering wasn't really a decision. You could run your whole operation without ever touching a car wash or a restaurant and nothing bad would happen. Dirty cash and clean cash were the same thing in practice - both sat safely in your stash houses, both survived
Drug labs are now operational Your drug labs now run on a production cycle. Every couple of minutes, a batch of product finishes cooking and the lab is ready for pickup. Your crew member assigned to that lab will walk over, collect the full batch, and the lab resets until the nex
The Director is smarter The system that drives rival activity, police pressure, and world events has been significantly reworked. Rival factions now respect outcomes — if a crew was already sent and hasn't been dealt with, no second crew gets dispatched. You won't see endless rei
Watching a playtest session when the Director decided to send a rival crew across the map mid-operation. They crossed into player territory, found one of the gang members running a corner, and opened fire. As the player there was nothing to do - no button, no order, no way to res
Debtors, Distributors, and Corrupt Officers were invisible in normal gameplay - they'd technically spawn but despawn before the player ever saw them. They now appear at game start, are maintained by the population system, and stick around long enough to interact with. Running ope
How we're tuning BBox: Kingpin - Mod First design and The Director One thing that shaped how we built everything: no data lives in the codebase. Every entity, every event, every rule is a JSON definition - what we call “Mod First” architecture. It's a bigger topic (separate post
