Why We're Bringing Back the First Adventure

Hello everyone, this is the ZENONIA 1 dev team.

We've been sharing key information and improvements about the game through dev notes and notices, but this time we wanted to tell the story of ZENONIA 1's development in a different way.

In 2008, Zenonia's first adventure began on a small mobile screen. After many years, it's now returning on Steam.

Why are we restoring ZENONIA 1 now? What did we choose to preserve from the original, and what did we change? What considerations went into bringing an old title back to life in today's PC environment? The dev team answers these questions directly below.

Q. Why did you decide to restore ZENONIA 1 now?

ZENONIA 1 is where the series began — the game where many players first experienced the fun of adventure and progression in mobile RPGs.

As time passed, it became increasingly difficult to play the original on modern devices, but fans continued to express their desire to experience Zenonia again. We too wanted this first adventure to be something players could still play today, not just a memory left in the past.

This year also marks the 18th anniversary of the original game's release. We felt it was a meaningful moment — a chance for longtime fans to relive that era's adventure and to introduce new players to where Zenonia began.

This project didn't start from a desire to create a brand-new Zenonia, but from wanting to reconnect that past experience with today's players.

Q. What does "restoration" mean to your team?

For us, the core of restoration is keeping the original experience at the center.

Simply making the old version run on PC wasn't enough. On the other hand, modernizing every single element risked turning it into a different game from the ZENONIA 1 players remember.

So we kept the elements that define the identity of the original as much as possible, such as the story and characters, the class and growth structure, equipment and skills, the good/evil system, hunger and weight, and the day/night cycle.

Meanwhile, things that stemmed from the limitations of the devices at the time — control schemes, UI readability, screen layout, settings features — were refined to fit today's play environment.

The most important standard throughout development was simple:

"Does this change help deliver the original's fun more effectively, or does it change the original itself?"

We used this question to decide what to preserve and what to improve.

Q. What was the most difficult part of the restoration process?

The biggest challenge was adapting a game designed for feature phones and small screens to the PC environment without losing its unique feel.

Resolution, aspect ratio, UI placement, input methods, and even seemingly minor things like character movement speed and timing all have a huge impact on how the game actually feels to play. For players who remember the original, even small differences can feel like a completely different experience.

We had to improve controls for keyboard and controller while preserving the rhythm of movement and combat that players felt in the original. And just because we could display more information on screen didn't mean adding all of it was the right answer.

Making features work correctly and making them feel true to Zenonia turned out to be two different problems. Finding the balance that satisfied both was the trickiest and most important part of the process.

Q. How did you decide what to preserve and what to improve?

We based our decisions on whether an element presented players with meaningful choices, or whether it was simply an inconvenience born from old hardware and interfaces.

For example, systems like hunger and weight, the good/evil system, and the day/night cycle might feel unfamiliar by today's standards. But these are important features that shape how exploration and growth work in ZENONIA 1.

Hunger makes players prepare food and resources before setting out on an adventure. The weight limit makes players think carefully about which equipment and items to carry. The good/evil system ties player choices to Regret's journey, and the day/night cycle adds a distinct rhythm and atmosphere to the game world.

We kept the elements that encourage players to think and make meaningful choices.

On the other hand, things like difficulty comparing equipment stats, insufficient control guidance, or repetitive menu navigation had little direct connection to the core fun of the original. We actively improved these to fit the PC environment.

What we wanted to preserve wasn't every inconvenience from the past; it was the choices and the fun embedded within them.

Q. What did you pay special attention to in restoring the game for PC?

Controls, readability, and play flow.

We reviewed input responsiveness and movement flow so the game would feel natural on both keyboard and controller, and adjusted the UI and screen layout so necessary information is easy to grasp at a glance on larger screens.

We redesigned the UI to better match the game's pixel art style, and improved damage numbers, hit effects, and targeting indicators so combat is clearer to follow.

We also addressed things that used to interrupt play flow — quick save, equipment comparison, batch equipment repair, shop controls, and detailed audio settings. This version also includes Steam achievements, expanded language support, balance adjustments, and overall stability improvements.

What we wanted to improve wasn't the fun of the original itself, but the unnecessary friction players had to go through to reach that fun.

Q. Did feedback from the Steam Next Fest demo influence development?

The demo showed us that longtime fans and new players were paying attention to different things.

Players who remembered the original recalled small movements and visual details with precision — things like the double-tap dash and the afterimage effect that appears while dashing. Based on this feedback, we implemented the original-style dash (triggered by pressing a direction key twice) along with the afterimage effect in the full version.

New players sent a lot of feedback about things needed to understand the game — UI readability, control guidance, quest guidance, equipment comparison, and combat information. Based on this, we made further improvements to the UI, convenience features, and combat feedback.

Through this process, we reconfirmed that what players remember isn't just the graphics or story — it's also sensory details, like how it feels when you press a button, or the rhythm of movement.

The current version of ZENONIA 1 wasn't completed by the development team's judgment alone. The feedback from everyone who played the demo and shared their thoughts was a huge help in bringing the original's feel back to life more faithfully.

Q. How did you balance the needs of longtime fans versus first-time players?

For longtime fans, what matters is re-experiencing the ZENONIA 1 they remember. For new players, what matters is being able to understand and enjoy the game without needing any prior knowledge.

So we kept the original story, growth structure, and unique systems intact, while improving control guidance, information delivery, UI readability, and convenience features.

Players who experienced the original can rediscover familiar scenes and the play feel they remember, while first-time players can experience the depth of a classic action RPG — three classes, a variety of equipment and skills, the good/evil system, and resource management.

Our goal was for this to be an RPG people can enjoy on its own merits the first time they play it, not one that requires nostalgia to appreciate.

Q. What do you hope this restoration means to players?

This project isn't simply about bringing an old game back to market.

It's about preserving an important early title in mobile RPG history, and carrying forward the story and adventure within it so it can still be experienced firsthand on today's platforms.

The reason we brought ZENONIA 1 back isn't to replace old memories with something new — it's because we wanted to carry that adventure from your memories into a form you can still play today.

If longtime players who start the game again naturally recall that old feeling, and if new players can enjoy it as a solid action RPG even without any nostalgia, then we believe this restoration will have achieved something meaningful.

ZENONIA 1 officially launches on Steam on August 31, 2026. The full version will include the complete story, from where the demo left off to the conclusion of Regret's journey.

After launch, we will continue to listen to community feedback and keep improving the game so the adventure feels even more enjoyable.
