Of all the games made so far in Unreal Engine 5, the one I've had the most fun with is RoboCop: Rogue City, an unapologetically old-fashioned FPS that delivers some of the most intense, graphic combat seen in video games to date. This is combat that our reviewer of the game described as 'straight up murder' and that caused him to totally lose it when he went to punch a baddie for the first time and RoboCop's fist flew out 'with the force of a particle accelerator, instantly atomizing their skull.'.. In case you missed it, the sequel to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is here, as Senua returns in a brutal journey of survival through the myth and torment of Viking Iceland. Intent on saving those who have fallen victim to the horrors of tyranny, Senua faces a battle of overcoming the darkness within and without.
Here are some of the reasons you should check it out:
A crafted experience of cinematic immersion Sink deep into Senua’s world and story, with beautifully realized visuals and encapsulating sound.
Senua’s unique perspective Experience the world through Senua’s eyes and ears, as a Celtic warrior who experiences psychosis.
A journey into Viking Iceland An epic journey across 10th century Iceland, recreated from real locations in stunning detail.
Every fight tells a story Brutal and visceral combat as Senua battles for survival.
But don't just take our word for it. Here's what the critics are saying about Senua's Saga: Hellblade II...
Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 got a look in at the Xbox Developer Direct last week, and if that's got you interested, you might want to pick up the first game soon. At the time of writing, lasting up until January 25, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has a very big discount of 90% off on
Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 got a look in at the Xbox Developer Direct last week, and if that's got you interested, you might want to pick up the first game soon.
At the time of writing, lasting up until January 25, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has a very big discount of 90% off on Steam. Typically the game sells at £25, but with that discount you can grab it for as little as £2.50, which is obviously quite the bargain, and cheaper than a Tesco meal deal these days - the deal even includes the VR edition of the game, a little bonus for those of you that have headsets laying around somewhere. The soundtrack is also currently on sale, and in a bundle with the two together it'll only set you back £4.61, which is more expensive than a regular meal deal, but cheaper than the five quid meal deal, so it's got that going for it.
There doesn't seem to be a particular reason for the sale, though presumably it's a tactic to get more people to get the first game given the upcoming sequel Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2's deep dive during the Xbox Developer Direct last week. That trailer showed off the next step in Senua's journey, as a celtic warrior who lives with psychosis. Like the rest of the game's shown off during the Direct, it was intercut with some behind the scenes footage of several devs working on the game, including the in-depth motion capture process.

Coming seemingly out of nowhere, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice delivered a PC gaming experience that nobody had experienced before. The sequel to Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice has a release date! Revealed at Xbox Developer_Direct, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II will be coming to Steam May 21, 2024.
Here's what our Ninja Studio Head, Dom Matthews, had to say in a blog post on the Xbox website.
Hello, Dom here, Studio Head at Ninja Theory. As I write this, we are now in the final few months of development on Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, preparing for our launch Day One on Xbox Game Pass and across Xbox Series X|S, Windows and Steam on May 21. It was a pleasure to give you all a deeper insight into Senua’s next journey, our studio and our talented team in Developer Direct.
Since the release of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice , Ninja Theory has transitioned from being an independent team to one that sits within Xbox Game Studios. Although this has seen change for Ninja Theory, particularly in terms of the support now available to us for striving towards our ambitions, what has not changed is our passion and commitment to our studio mission - to craft life-changing art with game changing tech.
This might sound like a lofty mission, but it is something we are proud to have achieved before in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – a game built in a space we called ‘Independent AAA’, where we worked with the creative spirit and freedom of independent development but strove for the types of high-end production values often only associated with AAA games. We also took advantage of the freedom that digital-only distribution offered us to create a game of the length that fit perfectly with our intended experience but could be sold at a lower price to reflect the shorter length of our story. This framework allowed us to focus on the things we really care about – taking our fans on an unforgettable journey into Senua’s unique world.
In Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, our approach is the same. Although we are no longer an independent studio, our creative spirit has in fact been emboldened by our joining of Xbox Game Studios, and in this new chapter of Senua’s life we have been able to push our production values way beyond what we were able to achieve previously. So, my message to players is that if you loved Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, or if you enjoy narrative-led experiences of cinematic immersion, we are building Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II for you.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II will be a game crafted from the heart – a game similar in length to the first Hellblade, with a focused narrative, and sold digital-only at a price of $49.99 USD. And you can once again expect to join Senua in understanding her world through perception puzzles led by her experiences of psychosis, in brutal and visceral combat and in traversal gameplay, this time across the harsh but beautiful landscapes of 10th Century Iceland. Crucially, all these elements are intertwined in a unique visual and audio experience, where everything is in service of Senua’s story. So, you can expect more of the same, but this time with the support to push our ambitions for immersion, fidelity and richness far further than before.
I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all our fans across the world. Your well wishes and support is what drives us on. In Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II we want to make it as easy as possible for you all to enjoy Senua’s journey and so we have increased the breadth of our localization to 26 subtitled languages – including Arabic, Ukrainian and, of course, the language of the land of our journey: Icelandic!
Know that here at Ninja Theory, our partners and collaborators across music, mental health, art and technology are working hard to bring you, once again, a special experience. We look forward to you joining Senua’s new journey on May 21.

Following a recent report that discussed AI led voice acting, Hellblade developer Ninja Theory has clarified that it has no intentions to stop using real voice actors.
GLHF recently ran a report on AI voice acting, and how voice actors are concerned about losing their jobs to the technology. The piece in part focused on one such company working on this tech called Altered AI, and noted how Ninja Theory, currently working on Hellblade 2: Senua's Saga, is working with Altered AI, leading some to be concerned that the studio is replacing actual actors with AI. But Ninja Theory has put any of these concerns to bed with a recent tweet.
"No. For clarity, we use this AI tech for placeholder content only to help us understand things like timing and placement in early phases of development," wrote Ninja Theory in response to a Twitter user asking if the studio was in fact replacing real voice actors with AI. "We then collaborate with real actors whose performances are at the heart of bringing our stories to life."
It's been two years since we first saw Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 revealed on-stage at The Game Awards , and now – to mark the anniversary of the occaision – we've got a brand new gameplay trailer for the game to enjoy. The most striking thing about the trailer? It looks ridiculou
The most striking thing about the trailer? It looks ridiculous; you wouldn't believe it was captured in-engine if the developer Ninja Theory hadn't assured you it was. In keeping with the previous game, we see an ancient world inhabited by what could be mythical creatures or figments of poor Senua's imgaination as she roams the wilds with her kinsmen.

Following our recent update bringing visual enhancements and accessibility improvements to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, we have released a patch addressing some of the minor issues some users were encountering. These include:
• Fix for ultra-wide screen support • Fix for audio levels not being applied properly after the update in certain cases • Fix for sliders not working when dragged along • Fix for RT shadows switching when looking through a portal on Valravn's map • Fix for stuttering some people experience with DX12, done by pregenerating a package of shaders for both RT On and Off presets.

Ninja Theory's acclaimed 2017 action-adventure, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, has just received a new update, bringing August's Xbox Series X enhancements over to PC. Additionally, a range of new accessibility features have been introduced to both versions.
The official description for Hellblade's PC enhancements is a little vague, with Ninja Theory only promising "enriched visuals", alongside DirectX Raytracing, NVIDIA DLSS, and AMD FSR support. However, the new PC release will almost certainly reflect the Xbox Series X version, which introduced the likes of upgraded materials, particles, and draw distances.
If you're curious to learn more, Digital Foundry took at closer look at Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice on Xbox Series X back in August, writing, "Hellblade was always a beautiful game...but this upgrade is a whole lot better and well worth checking out."

After releasing an Optimised for Series X|S patch for Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice earlier this year, developer Ninja Theory has finally released a patch for the PC version that brings substantial accessibility and graphical enhancements to the game. The patch is live right now and comes at no extra cost to current or future players.
The most transformative change to the game's visuals comes in the form of ray tracing, which is used to render more accurate reflections and shadows. Ninja Theory has also taken the opportunity to update the game's materials, particles, and LOD (level of detail) so there's plenty for everyone regardless of their GPU's ray tracing capabilities.
To help boost fps, the game now supports both Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR upscaling techniques. Given how taxing ray tracing can be, even on the best graphics cards, these techniques should help keep Hellblade running at high frame rates without skimping on visual fidelity.
Four years after launch, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice just got a substantial update on PC, adding a bunch of graphical flourishes to bring it up to speed with the times. That means it now has DirectX ray tracing, "updated materials, particles level of detail," as well as support

Just over four years since launch we’re happy to introduce a huge new update to Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Starting with visuals, we’ve integrated the enhancements we made to the recent Xbox Series X|S release of Hellblade, including updated materials, particles, level of detail and Ray Tracing.
This new build includes Ray Tracing presets (Low, Medium, High), with Ray Traced reflections, plus Ray Traced shadows exclusive to the High preset. We think this brings a new depth to Helheim never seen before, so we’re excited for people to retread Senua’s steps in an even more immersive environment. Hellblade on PC now also supports both DirectX 11 and 12, with support for NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR upscaling for an optimised experience.
We have also used this opportunity to add some key accessibility features to make Hellblade available to more people. These include full controller and keyboard remapping, subtitle customisation, and colour blindness presets for Deuteranopia, Protanopia and Tritanopia.
For returning players and those who have yet to experience Senua’s journey into Helheim, we’re excited to provide this free update, making it the best looking and most accessible version to date.

What are the best Viking games on PC? The Vikings weren't the most diplomatic group of settlers in history. The famous seafaring hustlers made haste across Northern Europe, causing chaos wherever they docked. Their devilish deeds remain firmly stamped in our contemporary consciousness; most are familiar with the famous stories of the Edda, the seminal Medieval Icelandic literary works to which we owe much of our knowledge of these Norse brutes. Their stories are inscribed in runestones and have reverberated for centuries, long since they were first committed to rock.
Most of these myths still worm their way into the media we engage with now, from Marvel Comics to Attack on Titan. Yet, video games are one of the most lucrative sources of vicarious Viking myth, putting you in the hefty shoes of the gods or the mere mortals that cowered obsequiously at the beck and call of Asgard.
Viking games see us exploring the mythical underworlds of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and absorbing the souls of freshly-dispatched dragons in Skyrim. We also get to inhabit their gnarled leather shoes as we face off against, err, Samurai and Knights in the anachronistic chaos of For Honor. There's a wide variety to ruthlessly conquer, so read if you want to loot and pillage the best Viking games on PC.
