Hunter x Hunter fans rejoice, a fighting game based on the beloved shonen series is in the works.
With its broad range of characters and their various abilities, you would think that a series like Hunter x Hunter would be ripe with fighting games. Unfortunately, that's not been the case so far, but over the weekend at Jump Festa, developer Eighting and publisher Bushiroad Games announced together that they are making a Hunter x Hunter fighting game. Unfortunately again, that's pretty much it in terms of details, but more details are apparently being shared during Bushiroad's New Year's broadcast next year, January 6 (no, I'm not happy about another year being almost over either).
If you think that the name Eighting is ringing some bells, that's probably because it's worked on some games you've quite likely heard of; in terms of fighting games, the biggest one is easily Marvel vs Capcom 3, as well as its follow-up Ultimate, but it's also worked on games like Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Bloody Roar. On top of that, Eighting also helped out on Arc System Work's DNF Duel, and while it might not be a fighting game, Nintendo's Pikmin 4. So hopefully it's the right studio for the job.

The event, which was bought out by Sony and RTS in 2021, is also making some substantial changes! The Top 8 finals format has been controversially scrapped and replaced with Top 6, apparently to keep things from running overtime.

Despite being in the domain of arcades and consoles for decades, fighting games are now on PC in droves. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (hereby abbreviated to UMVC3) was one such fighter I never thought I’d see on PC, since its fast-paced and utterly crazy combos would never have lent themselves favourably to any device other than an arcade stick. With both Disney and Capcom liking the idea of money though, it was inevitable that UMVC3 would make it. Its followup, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, was a bit of a disaster, with a lukewarm roster and a tacked-on story mode that was a bloated waste of time. But UMVC3 is still worth diving back into.

Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite doesn't release on console and PC until sometime later this year, but Capcom has thrown in a teammate to strike first: a PC release of 2011's Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. It's fast, cluttered, and fairly opaque to newcomers, who, like me, may spend their first multiplayer match watching Phoenix Wright being pummeled like a tetherball by Wolverine and Dr. Doom. But that's part of the MvC charm, and seeing Okami's Amaterasu on PC in any form is life affirming.
The tag-team fighter came out nicely on PC—it's not extensively tailored for our platform, but there are no crucial flaws, either. A basic 'PC Settings' menu controls resolution, fullscreen or windowed options, antialiasing, texture quality, and VFX quality. It supports 4K resolutions, which is nice, though ultrawide display owners will find a pair of black bars hanging out on the sides of their screens. That's slightly disappointing, if expected for a re-release of a 2011 game, but UMvC3 looks really nice on PC anyhow: See the options menu followed by low settings and max settings screenshots below.

The framerate is unfortunately capped at 60 fps, but on my PC with an original GTX Titan, it holds that 60 cap without a hint of stuttering. Most newer Nvidia cards—900-series, 1000-series—should run it flawlessly, then, and probably older ones, too. (The recommended specs include a GTX 560.) I haven't seen any reports of performance issues on either Nvidia or AMD cards, and load times are nearly non-existent on my SSD.
There are complaints about laggy online games, though. It probably depends a lot on your connection and your host's connection. UMvC3 isn't very populated right now, so I can't test a bunch of online matches in a row—it took about 30 minutes before I could even find one opponent (granted, this was the middle of the day on a Wednesday). When I did, it ran just fine. I was easily juggled to death, and can't blame it on lag. I was also juggled to death, without lag, in my second match. (If you're not good at UMvC3, don't expect to have much fun online regardless of the connection quality.)
Most of the negative Steam user reviews do cite the online experience as the primary disappointment, though. That, combined with the low player population, means I can't wholeheartedly recommend the online side of UMvC3, even though I didn't run into network issues personally.
(One note: If you do end up enjoying online play, watch what you say. I couldn't find an option to turn off my mic.)
For local play, though, this is a stable, good-looking port with few faults. I alt-tabbed out to write this—God, I love a game that doesn't struggle against being minimized—and have been popping back in over the course of the past hour with no trouble. (I leave it on the character select screen so I can hear 'I wanna take your for a ride!' loop endlessly, a strong side benefit.)
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 is $25/£20 on Steam. If that's too steep for you, or you want to save your fighting game money for Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite, then just enjoy this gif of Deadpool's stupid strut instead.

If you've played any of the previous Capcom Vs games in the past, you'll know the drill here: familiar triple tag-team one-versus-one bouts which often get lost in a blur of special maneuvers, high pitched screams, and finger-mashing button-bashing.
