Drift Stage – Post Gamescom Progress Report:
Gamescom has come to a conclusion; and with it – the Summer of 2026.

As of August 31st, 2026, the Drift Stage Q1 - Q3 timeline came to a successful conclusion. With Storm Electricity demoing the latest Unity 6 development build of Drift Stage at Gamescom, testing and Steam release preparations initiated immediately post event – signaling the beginning of the Q4 phase of the 2026 Drift Stage development timeline.
If you tested Drift Stage at Gamescom 2026 – you were one of the first people on the planet to play this Drift Stage build. Only Storm Electricity and Mobile Joypad had accessed to 0.5.0.5+, and the subsequent 0.5.0.8, 0.5.0.9, and 0.5.0.10 kiosk versions.

Attendee input and experience with these builds has proven invaluable to development – and progress on the physics engine calibration / tuning by Super Systems has jumped from 70% to 90% in under a week due to the input from attendees and play test footage. The sheer amount of different perspectives available at an international trade show like Gamescom can’t be easily reproduced; and the reception and energy following the event have allowed for an unparalleled circumstance to occur.
We would like to extend our thanks to Scene World Magazine, Storm Electricity - and all parties involved in the Gamescom Drift Stage demonstration.
All eyes are on Drift Stage – and the final act of our one year plan is now in effect.

Current Challenges:
Coordination of an event of this scale is has not been attempted by Super Systems Softworks in conjunction with a working development cycle since E3 2017. The combined effort and effective coordination of the respective teams, across Scene World – Storm Electricity, Mobile Joypad, and Super Systems Softworks is noted.
The process of working on a software project and running a polished “floor demo” are incompatible by nature – this necessitated mixed timelines, and staggered goals based on what was available to the project, accessible, or was in need to be addressed. Obstacles like this – including hurdles involving Humble Bundle and Kickstarter - presented a lot of challenges leading up to Gamescom; complicating the normal procedures and best practices typical of a video game project.
Delays and setbacks related to performing 10+ years of Unity version porting in under 6 months presented themselves– as well as problems related to the condition Drift Stage’s source code resulting in over four months of collective delays – however, overall; this did not present any substantial problems, and was successfully mitigated in time for post-Gamescom and the projects extended Q4 goals.
These delays did have an effect on the level of polish on the Gamescom build - featuring partially complete physics – both from a mechanical and implementation / control perspective. This was taken into account and presented valuable play-testing at a preliminary stage of physics engine calibration despite representing an incomplete game play experience.
With the hypothetical projections for September now a reality, focus on delivering the next Steam build has come into absolute focus. My initial projects prior to Gamescom were for an early September release – which may be possible, but adjustments to the release window will allow for a substantial increase in quality – and maintain multiple ideal release time-frames leading up to the end of the year.
2026 Steam Release Preparations and Release Date:
As of this update – a release is technically possible, but the next Drift Stage builds content – and the number of new features requiring polish and debugging have necessitated and early shift to “Release Candidate” considerations. This shift from a “as soon as possible” development build release model to a “feature complete” testing and debugging model was not planned – but comes as a result of the recent breakthroughs and progress jumps and is an overall positive development – as the physics tuning menu and other key features are still in iterative prototype stages; but are all demonstrating functionality amongst minor bugs.
With this in mind, Storm Electricity has opted to not set a release date yet – as only four months remain in the year; and the window for new builds is apparent based on the available windows left in 2026. Release date considerations are all set – but the decisions won’t be made until the next build review at the end of next week.

August Development Recap:
As noted in the previous progress-report, due to changes in newer Unity versions physics implementation, the “legacy” vehicle control physics present in previous Drift Stage builds required re-calibration, with the values being “reset” to new default values. Due to this, the “Legacy Physics” mode was not demoed at Gamescom – as the focus was the new “Arcade” physics option. Extensive testing and recalibration of this “Legacy Physics” and preliminary tuning has been completed – with initial testing resulting near-completion based on the new implementation of the physics engine. Further tuning will likely be required as refinements are made to the physics and control code, but progress has been fast, even with incomplete tools.
Calibration and “base-line” values are being actively tested and reviewed by Storm Electricity as of this update. New footage demonstrating tuning values and corresponding gameplay are in the pipeline and will be released in the following weeks after internal review.
Impact and Intended Use Case:
Observing the Gamescom Attendees performance and experience with the build demonstrated useful insights that translated to accelerated testing and calibration of the aforementioned “physics tuning”.
Mirroring the experience of the 2014 “pre-alpha” Drift Stage demos with the latest physics iteration has proven successful – with the learning curve balanced and a better entry-point for new players due to more familiar and forgiving mechanics.





Arcade Physics Mode:
“Arcade Physics” delivers a different driving experience then "Legacy Physics" - while remaining faithful to Drift Stage's core mechanics. This is different control implementation, using the same underlying physics engine but tuned based on feedback from the previous Steam versions.
“Hold Brake to Drift” – mechanic, simplifying the controls input and “on / off” logic of the grip to drift transition.
“Guard Rail Impact” – hitting the guard rail will propel you back to the course – speed loss is minimized, and more recovery is possible than in previous iterations.
“Off-Rails Steering” – steering your car, and corning now allow for a greater degree of angle, drifting is no longer necessary for every minor bend – allowing the player more options on how to navigate curves. Adjustment to the “tuning” values allows for variations on the extremes of “grip corning” vs “drifting”.
“Drift Fluidity” – The value that controls the point which the steering controls shift from “grip” steering to “drift” steering can be adjusted – and current tuning setups favors fast, responsive “grip” steering; with drift entry occurring shortly after the application of brakes.
“Drift Feel” - As a result of the different features of the “Arcade Physics”, faster rotation and grip resistance based on your throttle and brake modulation make for a more “dynamic” experience during a drift – where “Legacy Physics” requires more commitment to your initial “turn-in” and less modulation of brakes and throttle.
“Drift Chaining” – Re-centering your car after a drift no longer “disengages” a drift. So long as the brake is still being held – transitioning to a drift in the opposite direction is possible. This is in contrast to the “Legacy Physics”; which requires timing your brake points, and tapping them at the center point of your cornering pivot in order to chain your drifts.
Overall this new physics mode aims to allow for a simpler implementation of the Drift Stage “drift model” while maintaining a similar skill ceiling – and will feel familiar to anyone with experience playing the previous versions.
Efforts to restore the “Legacy Physics” have been largely successful, and offer the same tuning capabilities as the new “Arcade Physics” mode. Progress on both modes are a priority, but the menu toggle to switch from one mode to another still presents a hang / soft lock – despite saving the change and functioning as normal on re-launch.








Developer Tuning Menu:
The feature to adjust the values that control the behavior of the underlying physics engine in Drift Stage was planned to be user editable since the games inception in 2014. Despite being crucial to development, the addition of this feature was never delivered; and as a result raised many unnecessary problems in its absence.
Pressing the assigned function key will now open a menu on the left side of the screen displaying all of the simulated physics values affecting the car, and how it responds to your controller inputs, steering thresholds, the road, the amount of power being delivered to the wheels – the friction of the tires, and things like drag and down-force. This feature was announced in the last update – and has entered its 2nd iteration since the end of Gamescom.
These physics values affect the way the cars in Drift Stage handle, drift – turn, and dozens of other factors that change the way the game feels and controls. We are working towards balancing and providing an “intended” base line tune for both physics engines in order to provide players with the opportunity to adjust Drift Stage’s engine themselves – and share their tunes to demonstrate their changes to the current physics models – or present entirely new implementations based on new values.
Efforts to document the specific values and their functions are underway; for internal and tester use – and a general guide will be available on release of the next build to aid in user adoption and familiarization with the mechanics and tolerances of the engine.


With the resolution of the remaining “mystery bugs” last month, and the code restoration efforts yielding results in returning core features; Drift Stage has seen marked and demonstrable progress in the last month.





New/Returning/Prototype Features:
- Ghost Car functionality (fastest lap record). (WIP)
- Actual Lap Count (currently set to 3, needs interface).
- Functional Speedometer (Misaligned, WIP).
- End of Race Screen. (WIP)
- Lap Counters and Finish Line functionality.
- Reset to Track to account for out of bounds occurrences / due to bug or intentional. (WIP)
- Photo Mode in pause menu, with filters and saving. (WIP)
- Title Screen Skybox fixed (WIP)
- Two tuned and playable physics modes. (WIP)
- Rumble Features return working on impacts, drifting.
- New Radio Tracks with full functionality.
- Track Select Thumbnails with correct art. (WIP)
- Changing "Physics Modes" in the "Settings" menu still causes a soft-lock, requires restart.
- Mobile Joypad updates for increased phone support - stability. (Requires Bluetooth)

Photo Mode functionality has been restored; including working filters.

Bugs:
Since the Unity 2023 build was released, a priority based bug list has been in effect - with Storm Electricity squashing as many as possible in time for Gamescom. Due to this, many issues have not been investigated yet - but progress has been made on other features deemed more important. With the new phase of development - a new bug list is being complied - combining the remaining, unresolved bugs from the Unity 2023 with the new issues, currently being tested.
Most of the new bugs currently being addressed are related to the physics engine changes – clipping out of bounds – or having one wheels clip through the track – still need to be addressed. Issues mirror past problems with 2016 -2017 builds – related to down-force values. All currently being investigated and are inherent to the physics changes.
Misc “quality of life” issues with driving controls due to new physics calibrations. Undesirable results from standard inputs and physics engine performance discrepancies when exiting ad rift need to be addressed on a code level; normal part of testing and balance process.
“Reset to Track” feature partially working – conflicting with current “invisible barrier” hidden geometry. Currently being addressed – needs minor adjustments to barrier implementation – spawn clearance for player cars.
“Photo Mode” functional but not saving to desktop / designated folder. (WIP)
"Engine Audio" still plays on loop during pause. Misc. audio issues.
"Track Reset" only works 30% of the time; collision issues with "out of bounds barrier".
Unaddressed features like the decal editor, online mode, and manual transmission are all being investigated; priority based debugging is still in effect based on necessary features for viable Steam release candidates. Any remaining broken features will be addressed based on time and need.
The right set of wheels "clipping" into the road. Adjusting downforce and spring rates to compensate is necessary.

Track-out respawning is partially functional, but has a conflict with the invisible barrier.

Return to Production:
Drift Stage, Version 0.5.0.5+ and 0.5.0.7, 8 , and 9+ have been under development and review since August 25th, 2026; however - returning to full production was not possible until a number of contract goals were met - and Gamescom had passed .
The weeks prior to and post Gamescom have been focused on providing an overall progress report and recaps of events while maintaining testing obligations and supporting Storm Electricty with build development. Multiple other fronts are being pursued in order to streamline production and new update turn-around.
Media Focus:
The Q4 social media sync aims to see a full return to media based updates – in line with Super Systems Softworks production standards and projects reputation as a producer of high-volume, high traffic, critically acclaimed media and content.
This means a shift from strictly monitor captures and point-of-view “live” updates – to recorded game play footage and screen captures from active development builds. Live footage and phone-camera updates will still appear when relevant or necessary.
With the progress being made to Drift Stage steadily gaining momentum, multiple media projects are now in production – with .gifs and video footage demonstrating development progress, bugs, and new features taking a priority. Legacy account reactivation remains a goal, with new accounts being rolled into activity within the Q4 timeline.

Next Step:
This new phase of development is the realization of an email conversation with Scene World Magazine from almost three years ago; with the 2026 timeline coming into effect only after months of discussion in 2025 between the three parties involved in the preliminary structuring and planning of the whole endeavor.
End of the Beginning:
In conclusion – late 2026, Quarter four timeline and Steam release preparations or underway, with active development on Drift Stage 0.5.0.9+. In accordance with this new phase, the post Gamescom social media syncing has been initiated – starting with this update. Super Systems Softworks, Scene World Magazine, and Storm Electricity have individually diverged on parallel task lists – with weekly progress check-ins and goals continuing until the designated and currently confidential release window.
