We've just uploaded a new patch to allow for custom background images !
Now when selecting a level to play, a new "Choose Picture" button is accessible.
From that button, you can select any user submitted image.
You are also able to browse for a local file to use.
When choosing a local file, you will the be asked to position / scale the image according to the level bounds, with the level ice breakable areas visible over the image (to setup the image so that the best parts of the image can be under breakable areas of the ice)
You will then position the image to create a planet preview. and select workshop visibility (or local only)
All in all, this can be done in less than a minute !

If images are to be shared on workshop, please make sure they contain no nudity, no sex, no gore, no copyright infringement or any other objectionable content (use your judgment... more detailed rules will be written as we go)
(Manually) Distributing an entire image set
With this new functionality, it is now possible to replace all planet images + all background images. Currently, the only supported way is by the Choose Picture button on a level per level basis through Steam Workshop.
If you want to make a collection of images to replace all images at once, you will have to do it from outside of the game. Fortunately, it is an easy process. Just setup your local version to have all the custom images you want and then distribute this folder to your friends

**DO NOT distribute our images. They are copyrighted and not to be distributed by anyone else but steam and us.
The best use for this technique is too quickly distribute a collection of images. For example, to play the entire game will kitties or dogs on the backgrounds. Since this is done outside of Steam, it can also be used to distribute images that would otherwise get banned on Steam such as nudes.
(Manually) Future Developments
We decided to ship this patch ASAP because we think it is a killer feature for the game going forward. However, we do recognize that the current implementation has many possible improvements. Here's a list of improvements we might bring to the system if the interest is high enough. No guarantees any of this will actually get implemented.
-Rate/Report functionnality integrated directly in game
-Creating a a collection of images directly on Steam (rather than manually copying a folder)
-Allow more then 50 alternates per level (pages)
-Allow sorting of alternates (Most Recent, Best rating)
