Enter The Void!
Welcome to a sneak peak of GALAK-Z’s much anticipated and free downloadable content, The Void.
This content will be available starting Thursday, April 14th, 11pm EST until Monday, April 18th, 8am EST. It is an extension to the existing season-based story but with a twist—instead of continuing with the same story based missions, The Void is an endless mode in the chaotic depths of space where you can enjoy the core moment-to-moment gameplay at the heart of GALAK-Z. Every run in The Void ends only by perishing. There are no save points. There is no mercy. However, your score will be posted each time to online leaderboards so that you can compete against other players’ high scores.
Unlocking The Void
In order to access the Beta version and The Void content, you will need to switch to the Beta branch within the Steam interface. To do so, right-click on the game from your Steam library page and select Properties. Click on the BETAS tab, and select The Void.
How to play
Once you select The Void from the title screen in GALAK-Z, a cutscene will be triggered giving you a brief explanation of how the gameplay works. We recommend you don’t skip it, as it provides context for this new mode.

Wes Fenlon'S 2015 PERSONAL PICK
Along with our group-selected 2015 Game of the Year Awards, each member of the PC Gamer staff has independently chosen one game to commend as one of the year's best.
If the developers of '90s space shooters like R-Type and Gradius had been able to code complex physics and AI, they would ve made something pretty damn close to Galak-Z. It s a game I followed for more than a year, hopeful that its focus on physics would set it apart from the many twin stick shooters I d played before it. It delivered. Galak-Z may look like a twin stick shooter, but you can only shoot straight ahead, and that means positioning is everything.
A great dogfight in Galak-Z is like the most badass viper engagement from the Battlestar Galactica reboot (and not just because the ships look remarkably similar). The vipers use forward and reverse thrusters to flip around in an instant and point their nose at twisting, dodging Cylons, and that s what it takes to stay alive in Galak-Z. I love the acrobatic dance between firing and dodging using forward, reverse, and side thrusters. A few seconds of sloppy play can wipe you out in a second, but weaving through a cloud of enemy lasers is immensely satisfying. More often I survive by tapping the dodge button in a panic or boosting backwards while firing at the enemy ships hurtling after me.
Even though Galak-Z was designed for consoles, the PC controls are shockingly good, and after a couple hours of play I preferred them to the original. The precision of mouse aim and side thrusters on A and D help me dodge incoming fire while doling out my own damage. I still don t feel like I ve mastered controlling the game, but I m good enough to flip between the fighter mode and the mech mode on the fly, making use of each set of abilities when I need them most.
Often that means using the mech s directional shield to absorb an incoming attack, or grapple one enemy and toss them into another for two seconds of breathing room. In one of my proudest moments, I threw a sparking piece of debris into a mech five times my size, taking out its shield, then transformed into the jet and boosted backwards as it charged me, firing lasers and missiles into the irate mech until it exploded. Suck it down.
The quiet moments in between engagements are tense, and it s satisfying to stealth your way past enemy squads that may be too much to take on (that s actually a lot of enemy squads, when you re low on armor or missiles). Galak-Z is a hard game, and having the restraint not to fight is crucial. Death has set me back many times, often when an unseen missile nails me in a minor dogfight 10 minutes into a mission. I do love warping out of a level with one bar of armor left on my ship and my heart in my throat, narrowly escaping an Imperial patrol after distracting them with the squad of hungry space bugs on my tail. Every mission of Galak-Z offers an opportunity to recreate the climax of Serenity, and then run like hell.
I do wish there was more opportunity to heal up to full health during or after a mission. Surviving with one hit point makes winning all the more satisfying, but sometimes I just want to immerse myself in a big, messy brawl with a little bit of a safety net. Galak-Z needs a pure combat mode, if only to give me a playground to better hone my fighting skills. Maybe then I ll have what it takes to beat the final chapter in an uninterrupted roguelike run.

I got cocky. I d reached the objective marker, but found myself ambushed by an enemy fleet. Too many to take on in such an enclosed space, I opted for flight over fight, hoping to either lose them en route to the extraction point, or isolate them and pick them off one by one. Weaving through a labyrinth of tunnels, I passed by a spider s lure of space junk, wheeling away a split-second before it lurched forward and grabbed one of my pursuers. I blasted a bulbous plant which released electrically-charged pollen into the path of another, obliterating his shields just in time for him to see a missile salvo arc toward his cockpit. Laughing, I boosted clear…and straight into the hungry grasp of a giant space bug. I died less than a screen s width away from the exit.
Galak-Z is great when things are going right, but it s brilliant when they re going wrong—and there are plenty of ways for that to happen. On one occasion I decided to take things slowly, methodically advancing through a maze-like interior, staying beyond the sight cones of patrolling craft where possible, and luring lone ships into devious traps. Having amassed a tidy haul of scrap, I meandered toward the exit, only to be struck by a jet of flame that had burst forth from a hole in a pipe. Startled, I panicked, shooting a gas tank which whirled around madly before settling on a trajectory that saw it smash into my cockpit and explode, removing my final sliver of health.
So yes, this sci-fi roguelike has rightly earned its fearsome reputation. You will perish, and often, which will reset you to the beginning of that 'season' of levels. I won t lie and claim failure isn t frustrating, because it obviously is. But win or lose, you ll have a wonderful time doing so. It may not always be scrupulously fair, but then it wouldn t be a roguelike without an element of fortune involved. And, if only occasionally, it can and will fall in your favour.
Luck comes a very distant second to skill, though. Galak-Z might have a steep learning curve, but it s a reminder that mastering an unorthodox control system can be a hugely enjoyable challenge. At its simplest level, it s like Asteroids, in that you rotate to aim and thrust to move in that direction—but it s far more nuanced, giving you a finer degree of control over your ship s momentum. This is a setup that has clearly been laboured over, tested and retested, tweaked and tightened to something approaching perfection. At times I wondered if I would have preferred a touch more manoeuvrability at the cost of weight, but upon consideration I m happy with the balance: with maximum thrust speed, your ship is on the brink of feeling skittish. If the odds can at times seem unfair, you re given the tools to get out of even the stickiest situation, whether you re strafing, boosting, or even applying your rear jets and reversing out of harm s way.
Then there s the juke, which sees your ship spin out of the screen and dive back in. It s a showboater s dream move, designed to encourage dangerous play—like boosting towards an enemy, lifting off at the last second to land behind your opponent, and swivelling to unleash a barrage into its rear. Worth the risk? Undoubtedly, though the screeching insectoids, powerful empire fleets and snarling raiders you ll face are not to be underestimated. They re often unusually smart, yet capable of errors in judgement—with clever positioning you can get a larger craft to blast its diminutive allies before they race off to call backup, or get two factions to fight one another, distracting them long enough to peel away to safety.
And if the 25 randomly generated missions are all, broadly speaking, salvage quests, Galak-Z works hard to contextualise your adventures. It takes place over five of the aforementioned TV show-style 'seasons', with five episodes in each. It looks and sounds for all the world like a great lost Saturday morning cartoon from the 80s - a delightful touch sees each journey begin with a new episode title and writer credit—and while the overarching plot won t win any awards, the script is light and witty and the performances are terrific—likeable protagonist A-Tak and his officer Beam share a warm rapport. There s even something moving about the game over screen, which shows an empty helmet with a cracked visor floating by, a surprisingly brutal reminder of the stakes.
Not that you ll need any further motivation to hit restart. Much as it stings to lose a ship equipped with half a dozen permanent perks, a tighter muzzle combined with three-way fire and bouncing bullets, there are enough thrilling discoveries to dull the pain—indeed, by the beginning of the second season you ll have a whole new series of combat techniques to learn, though it d be remiss of me to reveal why. Its final surprise for PC owners is a mode that unlocks checkpoints after every episode rather than forcing you to survive an entire season with just one life. Reaching the end may still be beyond some players, but putting the bountiful rewards of Galak-Z within the reach of many more budding space cadets can only be a good thing.

Galak-Z, the (deep breath) 80s-inspired mecha anime roguelike space shooter (phew) finally has a PC release date. And, surprise: it s soon!
Galak-Z: The Dimensional is launching on PC October 29, with a ton of bug fixes and tweaks implemented since it debuted on the PS4 on August 4. More significantly, the PC version is releasing with a brand new difficulty option called Arcade mode, designed for players who found the roguelike structure too punishing. Developer 17-Bit gave us exclusive access to a near-final build of the PC version to play around with, and it feels fantastic on PC, with a new keyboard/mouse control scheme and rock solid framerate.
Galak-Z is mostly the same game that launched on the PlayStation 4 back in August, but Arcade mode is a significant addition. Designer Jake Kazdal told me that he was surprised by some of the feedback he got when Galak-Z was released; he knew the game was hard, but wasn t prepared to hear so many people say it was truly, seriously punishing. Death comes fast in Galak-Z. If you don t master its acrobatic controls, using forward and reverse thrusters, a strafe, and a dodge to avoid enemy attacks, you re toast in no time. And when you die in the original roguelike mode, you start over a season of five missions. Arcade mode is 17-Bit s solution.
It s a simple addition. Instead of starting over an entire season when you die, you simply restart from the mission you failed. The game s random generation functions just as it does in roguelike mode, which means you won t be replaying the same mission parameters each time you die. You don t get to keep the scrap (used to purchase ship upgrades) that you collected during a failed run, but you retain any scrap you d spent at the beginning of the failed mission. That offers an opportunity to make different choices, or at least tackle a new mission without being weakened.
Galak-Z running at 2560x1440.
After failing one mission a couple times, for example, I decided to spend scrap I d been saving to repair a point of HP on my ship, just in case that one hit point meant the difference between life and death. More than once I ve warped out of a level after just barely juking half a dozen pirates and space bugs hungry for my hull, HUD blinking with a single remaining bit of armor.
Progress in Arcade mode doesn t carry over to Rogue mode, which means if you want to fully clear the game, you ll still have to tackle Galak-Z s seasons in perfect runs. Kazdal told me he s spent a good chunk of time designing fun Steam trophies to give players goals to shoot for. After getting my ass handed to me a few times in Arcade already, I m planning to use the more forgiving mode to hone my skills before tackling Rogue.
PC Settings
Keybinding options: check, as you can see from Galak-Z's VCR-themed options menu.
High refresh support: also check.
The rest of the team s time since August has gone into fixing bugs and performance issues that caused frequent slowdown on the PlayStation 4. From the PC beta build I ve played, performance is flawless. Galak-Z never dropped a single frame from 75Hz (the panel's default refresh) on a gaming laptop I tested on, although that system was running a powerful Nvidia GTX 970M SLI combo. We also tested the game on a desktop rig with an Intel Core i5-4790K and a much weaker Nvidia GTX 950 graphics card. It ran at a flawless 60 frames per second. On a system with an Nvidia GTX 780 Ti and a 144Hz monitor, the framerate fluctuated from about 110-144 Hz.
The PC port doesn t have all the features I d love to see for Galak-Z; there are no individually tweakable graphics or anti-aliasing settings (just low, medium, high). There s no native mod support, though I m hoping easy access to the Unity files in the Steam folder will allow for some enterprising modders to have their fun with Galak-Z. 16:10 resolutions aren t currently supported. But the most important stuff is there: customizable keybindings, unlocked framerate, and resolution options beyond 1080p (although Kazdal told me the assets aren t at 4K, so it s going to look its sharpest at 1080p).
On a 144Hz monitor and 780 Ti, intense action dropped the framerate to 110 fps. 60 fps is yesterday's news.
The keyboard and mouse controls feel surprisingly great—actually more precise than the gamepad controls the game was designed for. My favorite part is being able to use A and D to strafe left and right, and aiming with the mouse is obviously snappier than using a stick. There s definitely a learning curve after playing with a controller, but I think keyboard/mouse will quickly become my preferred way to play.
17-Bit plans to release Galak-Z on Steam on October 29 for $20, with a 20 percent discount at launch. We'll be playing more of the beta build over the next two weeks. The season five DLC, which will be free for both PC and PS4 owners, isn't launching simultaneously with the PC release, but according to Kazdal, it's still on its way.
If you're hungry for more on Galak-Z, check out our making-of story from visiting 17-Bit in Kyoto, Japan last year.

After a brief stint in consoleland, it’s headed to PC on October 29th. There’s a new trailer below.
