Short note to let you know that Rain Tactics is taking part to Steam's Cyberpunk Fest, starting tomorrow (03/08/2026 @10 AM PDT) !

For this event, will be releasing a small demo patch correcting a few glitches and implementing a new version of the game engine (unity) that will help for next updates. So if you have not tried the game yet, this is the time to do so!
Otherwise Rain Tactics' game development is ongoing on two fronts:
First: improving upon the demo with extra characters and content as mentioned in my previous post. The next playable character should soon be ready to be included in the demo.
Second: building the levels and entire characters roster for the full game. Happy to report progress on this front as the the visual layout of six levels of the "Circle" (the second zone of the game) is already done.

Rain Tactics is taking part to this year #TurnBasedThursdayFest - which is happening NOW!! And to celebrate this event, a new version of Rain Tactics' demo is now live :)
This update is quite massive as it fixes a few bugs and brings various QoL improvements. But beyond that, and as announced previously, important changes have been implemented in terms of gameplay with (i) classes redesign, (ii) new progression system, (iii) revised boon/upgrade system (iv) new UI and camera/movement mechanics and (v) changes to some levels.
For those interested, more details about the changes at the end of this post. And in any case, this update marks a significant milestone towards the full beta demo release. So please check it out. And as always, looking forward to your feedback !

As for what will come next, I am happy to say that while we are improving upon the demo, we have entered full production mode and have started creating the levels of the Circle (the opulent parts of Shavanath). So things are shaping up ! But before you get a taste of this, next update of the demo will include:
Two additional playable characters
Interesting new mechanics to bring in companions mid-run
Additional events / dialogues to existing levels
At least one additional upgrade/boon category

Recap of implemented changes
Classes redesign: with revised set of abilities to make them feel more unique, some characters gameplay have drastically changed (for instance, Cyrus now can deploy Lizzy - her drone - which acts as an independent companion on the field of battle)
New progression system: "Out" the 3-class choice per character system, "In" a new ability tree per character that unlock new possibilities with each level up, and give you the opportunity to shape a character's evolution as per your needs (example of choice: is Cyrus to be more of a drone specialist, or hacker expert?)
Expansion upon gambits and talents: beyond their abilities, units now have access to unique set of talents, each providing various advantages in battle (from passive stat increase, access to new gambits, to getting steep discounts at the shops!). As for abilities, talents are unlocked through unit level up
New UI: following these gameplay and game progression changes, various UI updates were necessary, further emphasizing on the cyberpunk flair of the game; examples of UI refreshed are the level up menu, inventory, abilities selection

With the end of year approaching, I thought this was a good time to give you an overview of what we have been cooking since this summer.
Beyond various bug fixes and QoL improvements, the focus has been on bringing more depth to Rain Tactics and expanding upon the roguelite and strategy RPG aspects of the game. Hence, key gameplay changes that you can expect in the next demo:

Timing of the updated demo is still to be defined. But on top of these systemic changes, you can expect with the update (i) an improved boon system, (ii) upgraded levels and dialogues and (iii) at least one more character that will join the roster !

Now that the demo is out, wanted to share with you all some info about what is coming next.
Dev Roadmap
I will now be gradually improving upon the demo, while bringing the rest of the game to completion. What you can expect in terms of demo updates in the future (not necessarily in that order):
Various QoL improvements, bug fixes and proper save system
More types of Corporation upgrades and additional character dialogues
Expanded roster of Avowed that you can play with
More varied level objectives and Slums levels configurations
Implementation of more Avowed talents/gambits, and potential changes to the class systems
On the last point, I am still pondering whether the current class change system really works or not in terms of fun & strategic layer. So I might revisit this mechanic.
As for the timeline for all these updates... well they will come when ready ! There are still a few inhouse tools I need to develop to help with balancing out the game overall. So will see how all these things play out.
Patch v0.3.0.2
As for now, I just uploaded a small patch which addresses two points:
Bug: fixed a glitch in the fighting system that froze the game. Thanks to those who pointed that out
QoL: made the tutorial popups closable by simply clicking on them (vs having to click on the red X)

Very excited to let you know that Rain Tactics is taking part to the 2025 edition of the Turn Based Thursday Fest, starting this Monday June 2nd. And to celebrate this milestone, I am releasing the demo of Rain Tactics today ! So please enjoy it and provide me with tons of feedback !
The demo is building upon the input received during last year online playtest, and is set basically in two parts:

Part 1 consists of a first level that serves both as a small tutorial and as overall setting for the game plot.
Part 2 is actually the beginning of a standard "run", where you get access to your team of Avowed (unique characters with their own distinct classes, four available for now) and can start the exploration of the first levels of the Tower city of Shavanath.
So join Winter in his attempt to reach the Gate of Oblivion and make your way through the Tower City of Shavanath !

After posting last time about the battle mechanics of Rain Tactics, wanted to give a bit more info about the lore of the game and its world setting.

Overall game setting Rain Tactics takes place in a futuristic, cyberpunk world where large corporates emerged as the main organizing units of societies. Globalization of trade and international information exchange have grown exponentially. But culture and values remain mostly dictated by the ruling corporates in place, who wage a constant economic war between them. With time, magic which was once hidden to the crowd have now been unearthed with the resurgence of long forgotten deities who have decided to take an active part to the restructuring of the world. As such, the game follows Winter, an invincible god whose impact on the world has once been tremendous in shaping the rise and fall of civilizations.
The Tower City of Shavanath - a short history: The city of Shavanath, located in an island in the middle of the Atlantic ocean, is one of the few places that managed to escape the rule of the AAA corporations. This uniqueness is the result of the arrival of the mysterious Lady of the Dark, who engulfed Shavanath in a mist of darkness and propelled the construction of what is now an independant Tower City, some seventy years ago. The city is today considered a "neutral state". Its borders are open to all who accept to abide by the Mistress' rules. And most foreign corporations have setup local branches to capture a share of this 50 mn people market.
The main suburbs of Shavanath: Modern Shavanath is today structured in three main suburbs. The Slums constitute the lowest section of the tower city. One could typically describe them as a collection of low-life quarters where resides the workforce which maintains the city and handles its logistics. Most of these operations are unofficially managed by the Red Dragons, a local mafia gang. The Circle makes up the opulent suburbs that constitute the main part of the Tower. From luxurious resorts to trendy bars and fashion streets, The Circle boasts all the entertainment & services the wealthy citizens of Shavanath can dream of. Today, most of them are either working for a corporate local branch or for the powerful town administration office. Finally the top of the Tower City is dedicated to the Inner Sanctum, where the Mistress is said to be residing and where lies the Heart of Dark. This section of the city is off-limit to regular citizens - only a few privileged have ever set foot there. The Mistress having not been seen in decades, some say she never existed in the first place and is just a construct from the town administrators to ensure the city cohesion and rule of law. But this is probably just a despicable rumor spread as part of a corporate scheme, as who could deny the power of the Dark over the city?
Exploring Shavanath in Rain Tactics Winter has undergone a long journey in order to reach Shavanath and seek an audience with the Lady of the Dark. Unfortunately, Winter will have to go through various parts of the city to reach the Inner Sanctum. For that purpose, the player will get access to the Shavanath Elevator Network - or S.E.N - to quickly navigate through the city. But the Network connections are not open to all, and so access will have to be gained. Sometimes by force.
So that concludes this brief intro to the overall setting of Rain Tactics.

As announced in my last post, I wanted to give you an update on the main changes being implemented on Rain Tactics based on last year playtest.
As there is a ton of elements to cover, this first post will focus on the current state of the battle system, so that you know what to expect at the next playtest / for the demo release. Hope many of you will get the opportunity to try this out !

So about the battle system:

Combat system - the Core:

The fundamentals of the combat system rely on two pillars: a turn-based fighting mechanic, and a class system
The turn-based mechanic, heavily inspired from classic sRPGs:

Turn system: player and enemy units act in separate turns. Turn is over once all units from one party have acted
Auto-retaliation mechanic: a unit can typically attack one adversary, while the adversary has the opportunity to retaliate
Weapon triangle: a unit hit rate depends on the attacker / defender stats, but also on the type of weapons they are using
The class system:

Each character has an archetype that gives him/her access to 3 classes and some unique talents
The talents typically provide interaction options (like the ability to hack computer systems) , passive effects (see in the dark), or gimmicks on how to use the unit
Each class gives access to up to 5 abilities (whether attacks or heals) that can be learned and upgraded throughout a run
Each character in the roster can decide which class to embody at the beginning of a level, giving the opportunity to the player to adapt the team skills to the challenge ahead

The tactical twists, giving more depth to the Core:

Unit direction: will now influence a unit likeliness to get hit or not (backstabbing having a higher crit chance); giving more tactical weights to player's choice
Unit location: similarly, unit can get "cover" from surrounding objects, and can benefit/suffer from some areas effects (e.g mud slowing down movement)
AoE attacks: as in many regular t-RPG, some abilities now have the option to target multiple opponents; in that case, the "main target" will have the opportunity to retaliate against the attacker, while the others will be hit by a remnant effect (understand "weakened" version of the main attack - trying to balance things out here!). These attacks typically cost Energy Points, a rare resource in the game that allows you to use these powerful abilities
Opportunity attacks: sandwiching an enemy will give the opportunity for two units to attack an enemy successively (before the enemy retaliates). Considering the important advantage this gives, this is not an automatic setup, but more of a coordinated attack that requires Energy Points
Winter's Curse: each of Winter's Avowed (team members) can receive a temporary buff from Winter before launching an attack, at the cost of some of Winter's own self control...

The strategic Element: managing Winter's self control

Your main objective is to bring Winter to Shavanath's top floor where he will get access to the Gate of Oblivion
As such, Winter is always part of your starting team; he is both your trump card and vulnerable point
Winter as trump card: Winter is invincible and as such can act as a tank; furthermore, you can unleash his powers to one-shot almost any enemy or to strike with some of the most powerful AoE attacks in the game
Winter as a vulnerable point: but relying on Winter's power has a price; it will bring his self-control down, which you need to avoid at all cost
So it will be up to you to decide when to best rely on Winter's powers to clear the way through !

And that is basically the current state of the battle system. Sorry for the long post but thought it was useful (even for me !) to synthesize all this in a few lines. I also realize that a couple clips would make it easier to grasp the different elements. I will be soon be creating a short thread on Twitter @ErvyaStudios to illustrate all this !
I am constantly trying to deepen the tactical choices the player can make, while keeping the system not too complicated. So feel free to share thoughts, and hope many of you will get the opportunity to test this soon.

Hope you are all enjoying some well deserved time-off during the winter break.
From my side, as the end of the year is drawing near, I thought it was a good time to give you all an update on Rain Tactics' development.
As some of you may know, I conducted a playtest of Rain Tactics in May which was a great opportunity for me to receive early feedback on the demo. So first, wanted to thank all the people who took the time to play the game and give some input. It really was super helpful and quite exciting for me to get the demo live online !
Main points of feedback are the following:

Expand the battle system: by providing the playable characters with more abilities early on, by enabling more interactions between characters, and by making enemies more active
Give incentive to continue beyond the tutorial: by revising the tutorial setup and introducing additional characters early on
Make the demo less punishing: by revising the difficulty and relying less on "Hit/Miss" mechanics
All these inputs have convinced me to take the time to further improve the demo. Most of the updates I am implementing are either about i) addressing feedback received or ii) adding some content I did not have the time to put into the initial playtest (like allies quests). I will write a separate post to detail all the changes/ additions but as you may have guessed; this is taking a bit of time. So while I was hoping to release the demo by end of 2024, I am sorry to postpone (and this time, i will not abide by a specific timeline, I just want to take the time to make it right).
So all this to tell you all that Rain Tactics development is progressing, that I am really grateful for your support, and that I wish you all a great end of 2024 / wonderful 2025. Will try to post a bit more next year !
