You almost certainly noticed the lack of updates and leaderboard resets the past few months. Here is a post explaining why, and what changes are happening going forward.
Why the lack of updates and leaderboard resets? I'm busy, and only got busier. So to combat this, there will be two main changes, both of which kinda already happened
Leaderboards are moving from monthly to quarterly. The overall leaderboards remain unchanged, its only the resetting ones that will have their reset timings change
The highlighted levels will be ceasing. Their intended goal was to foster friendly competition in the community, and they unfortunately failed at doing so. They are not closed for good though, if there is interest revival is possible.
And lastly, a team update (no, nothing bad): The Hippos are continuing to plug away at our next title, though in general we all have been busier so progress has been slow. We will share more when we are ready, which has no timeline - this is a fun hobby project for us, and life does take priority. With that said, we are not dead (despite our artist(s) best attempts at murder via Baby Shark), there is still something in the works, just don't expect anything in the way of communication about it.

Development Update
No more planned updates - the game is on an indefinite hiatus. As members of the team want to work on it, they will. For the highlighted levels (these posts), I plan on continuing them at least into 2025. How deep into 2025 remains to be seen. Regardless of if these posts continue, the Monthly Leaderboards will continue to be reset monthly.

Meteor Basketball! Find this wonderful new gamemode under the "Minigames" section on Level Select! Also, make sure to play the tutorial so you know how it works.
Time slow mechanic! A Meteor Basketball exclusive, slow down the time (but not the timer!) to more perfectly line up your shots
No more replays in the tutorials. You know how you could race specific replays in the tutorial levels? Well, no more! Those levels, and Meteor Basketball ones, no longer have any leaderboard-based replays available.
Development Update
This is the last planned update for Disaster Golf. After 3 years of development (yes, that long, and including the process of taking the game out of university), we will be putting Disaster Golf on the backburner. Future updates are not impossible, but they will be as members of the team decide to make them, without a strict release timeframe or schedule.
Rest assured, the Hippos causing Havoc are not going away! We have started a new project, one that will be sure to excite! No, nothing else is getting said about that. Any more and our artist(s) will find me, and they will force me to listen to Baby Shark on loop for a week straight.

It's finally time: those things in the works from Update 1.3.0 are finally here! Those things, those changes and features as majestic as Margaret, what are they? They are as follows:

New songs! The game's original composer, Xavier Chapman, is back with two new tracks! Find them on any Jungle or Volcano level, there is a 50/50 shot you get it each time you play a level.
New sounds! Scrolling the leaderboard too dull and soundless? Now it clicks! Finding a David not give enough feedback? Now there's a sound for that! Those and many more, now in Disaster Golf!
New species have been discovered across the courses! Find the not-so-elusive long neck hippo in the Jungle, or the significantly more elusive baby dinosaur in the Volcano. Also our artist's thirst for vengeance is sated. Somewhat.
Original Soundtrack
That's right folks, Disaster Golf now has its OST for sale! Get some sick tunes to golf/destroy the world to today, including one never-before-heard (definitely not because we forgot to implement it years ago...) song. Hats off and major thanks to our composer, Xavier Chapman, for their wonderful work!

Tutorials: the undisputed most fun part of any game. And now, we have a brand new one to share! Presenting, the Meteor Basketball tutorial (minus any art, our artist has been ravaging a countryside and clearing it of any and all hippos)

Ability to race any leaderboard entry! You will find a button on each entry which will allow you to race, or ghost ball any entry that can be found. Yes, this is what the back-end change from last update was prepping for.
More back-end changes to better support race and ghost ball for any leaderboard entry
Development Update
We don't have any major updates at this time, we have been working on one of three things:

Changes that don't have visual impacts, yet. Let us cook.
Levels that we want you to experience for the first time in-game
Making sure to keep our artist appeased and live to see another day
Not a lot this time, but we have some pretty large things in the works. As soon as we have things solidified enough to share, expect to hear again!

I hope Archaeopteri is the plural of Archaeopteryx, it certainly sounds the best out of the various versions. Now, down to business, there's been another update! What does this one bring? New things, of course! Specifically:

Monthly Leaderboards! This will have its own entire section below, see that for details. Just know our artist made new icons, and seems to be appeased by this development.
Level geometry fixes. You can't escape your teenage math years, next up will be level trigonometry! Yes, math, not maths.
Some backend prepwork for a future update. This may result in slightly longer leaderboard submissions.
Minor bugfixes. If you notice any bugs, please report them on our Discord server (https://discord.gg/UNApuJcyxr)!
Monthly Leaderboard
Would you look at that, there is a whole new leaderboard in the game. Well, technically 36 whole new leaderboards, but that's a small detail.
Every level has a leaderboard that will be reset monthly. This is the new default leaderboard shown when selecting a level. Don't worry, the global leaderboards haven't gone anywhere. They are still accessible via a tab similar to the friends-only tab, and have not changed. I repeat: Monthly Leaderboards are the new default view, but the global leaderboards still exist and will be submitted to the same.
In addition to monthly leaderboards for every level, we would like to so something to highlight specific levels for people to compete in. So, each month we will make a Community Post (both here and on the Discord) specifying which levels are the focus for that month. And with each one of these, we will shout out the top players from the previous month's highlighted levels.
March's monthly leaderboards are starting now, have an extra two days! The highlighted levels for March 2024 are:

Island Hopping
Lava Falls
In addition to monthly leaderboards, we have a speedrun.com page! Well, we've had one since launch but kept forgetting to say something about it. The page is for entire game speedruns, so from Sweet Beginnings all the way through to Pyramid Scheme, the entire time counts! Check it out at https://www.speedrun.com/Disaster_Golf_

What's this? An update??? We've been listening to feedback, and have some bugfixes and QOL changes incoming (or, more likely, already landed)! These include:

Friends-only filter for the leaderboard! See which of your friends is the fastest, and compete with them, and only them! Note that scores will still appear on the global leaderboard, and your global rank will be shown
New disaster help button. When hovering over a disaster in the selection screen, a new "?" button appears in the top right corner. Click it to see what that disaster does!
Disaster Video changes. The disaster tutorial videos in the bottom right are now a global toggle, turning it off for one will turn it off for all.
Icon for David's! On the level select it will show if you have found the David for that level. This is retroactive to David's that have already been found.
Fixed bug with the tutorial controls panel on the right side of the screen. It shouldn't be there at all for non-tutorial levels.
Now, for a development update! We have a few things in the works for a larger update coming later. You've already been told about Meteor Basketball, here's a sneak peek at something else!
