What differentiates a story from the real world, or a simulation? A story is a series of choices, a set of moments captured, examined, and elevated. The real world goes on and on, but a story must have a clear beginning, middle, and end. And so the Talos Principle, a story we have worked on for more than a decade, must also come to an end.
When we were creating the original, at a time when the game had finally started to take form but before it was released, we asked ourselves: where does this story go? Not this franchise, not this product, but this story. Is there more to this that needs to be told, and what is it that needs to be captured by those hypothetical future games to create something truthful and beautiful? That's when The Talos Principle II and III were born, and they are so much part of the overall vision that we often think of the whole trilogy as one game in three chapters. Three moments in the history of robotic humanity that together form a bigger picture.
Just as Talos II was not the same game as Talos I, so this last game in the series will be unique in its own ways. But we've poured all the same love and consideration into this chapter as we have into the others, building the future world humanity created for itself after the events of Talos II, the mysterious place called the Anomaly, and of course the ingenious new puzzles you'll have to solve, featuring a host of new mechanics.

Remakes and remasters are not rare, but they are certainly not often seen in the indie space. Well, maybe they are in Croteam's little universe ːTheSeriousBombː
A lot has changed since the original's release, and our team is as passionate as ever. The lingering feeling that there is more to be done with it never disappeared, and it became more prevalent with the launch of The Talos Principle 2.
A Vision Reconstructed
Creating Talos Principle 2 was a long journey. We switched to a new engine, became proficient with various new tools, and finally built the next step in this future history. That enjoyable but frequently challenging process taught us a great deal.
As the tenth anniversary of the first game approached, and realizing that many new players may be reluctant to return to the original due to it being a decade old, we started to think about all the possibilities that a remaster offered more seriously. We realized focusing on a remaster could bring the game into the same engine as the sequel, upgrade the graphics, fix some quality-of-life issues that had bugged us for years, and introduce the world of Talos to a whole new generation of players in one fell swoop.
So, we decided to proceed! But like anything in life, we didn't want this to be a low-effort product, so we focused on providing tangible value.
On the technical side, there was far more work than just recreating the levels in Unreal Engine 5. We needed to blend old and new assets to create an up-to-date look. When we re-used the old ones, we put much effort into remastering them thoroughly upgrading meshes and improving textures.
Most environment assets were remade entirely using texture displacement, which is a perfect match for Nanite because it allows for high-detail geometry. We used many techniques we had learned from developing Talos 2, and in some cases, we improved them even further.
In combination with Unreal's lighting system, which allowed us to create more exaggerated lighting setups, these visual improvements enhanced the simulation's fantastical, hyperreal look. It is a place that is beautiful, eerie, lonely—and won't last forever.
The Puzzle Evolves
On the gameplay side, we introduced a brand new rewind mechanic to allow you to go back between 2 and 10 seconds and fix any missteps. This also helps you avoid being locked in a puzzle without knowing it. This change is based on feedback we received from folks being frustrated when a small mistake meant they had to redo the entire puzzle or situations where players would not be sure if their previous move meant they couldn't proceed.
For similar reasons, we also reworked the infamous time recorder; It now allows you to set up checkpoints (up to 20). You will no longer have to wait in one spot for a prolonged period of time in order to leave the room for later actions, removing the time pressure element. This makes for a more cerebral, less frustrating experience that all our testers describe as a huge improvement.
A more minor gameplay tweak, but one that was inspired by the great reception of a similar change in Talos 2, concerns the connectors. It is now possible to deselect connections individually, so you don't have to start from scratch whenever you want to change your configuration.
Finally, we've completely reworked the Messenger hint system, which everyone, including ourselves, found baffling, as the hints were incredibly hard to unlock and not particularly helpful. (Sorry.) Every freed Messenger will now give you three tokens that can be used to skip red sigil puzzles, giving players who are stuck some flexibility - although you still have to earn each Messenger's help!
A Familiar Future
With The Talos Principle: Reawakened, we don't want to change the fundamentals of the experience or transform it into something new. The core gameplay and storytelling principles remain unchanged. However, the game is visually refreshed, with many gameplay frustrations removed, and is now almost ready for its own journey into the future.
There are many more reasons we wanted to create The Talos Principle: Reawakened, including adding new story content and streamlining the user-generated content creation. We'll talk about them in our upcoming blogs, so stay tuned.

A decade ago, when we released The Talos Principle, we had no idea what to expect. We poured a huge amount of love and creativity into that project, creating a philosophical puzzle game that no-one had expected from the makers of Serious Sam. It was heartwarming to see so many people around the world embrace it.
Now we are announcing The Talos Principle: Reawakened.
After the success of The Talos Principle 2, we have some very cool projects going on, so why go back? There are many reasons, but the biggest one is simply that we love this game and while the original version is admittedly still pretty awesome, we wanted to create a definitive version that will keep the game fresh for years to come and allow a whole new audience to explore the Simulation.
Once again, we poured all our love and creativity into this project. We didn't just want to make a remaster with gorgeous graphics, although that's definitely part of it. But there's a lot more to this. There are quality-of-life improvements that make a real difference (seriously, the recorder puzzles are so much better now!). There's the puzzle editor. There's a whole new story to play! There are even developer commentaries.
Let's talk philosophy for a moment. We don't just think of games as products. These are the works that we will leave behind for future generations. The Talos Principle: Reawakened will both refresh and preserve this wonderful game that means so much to us.

Erin Fitzgerald as Alexandra Drennan was the heart and soul of the first game. She returns as Athena, the Founder of New Jerusalem. Because whose voice would she have taken if not Alexandra Drennan's?
Byron is an optimist, a believer in the humanist ideals of Alexandra Drennan, frustrated by the direction his civilization has been taking. He needed the charm and conviction that the amazing Peter Wingfield brought to the part, which was written for him.
Yaqut is a young explorer still figuring out his place in the world and struggling with some of the more difficult sides of humanity. We needed someone who could bring real heart, humor and vulnerability to the part, so we wrote it for Adam Green - and got him!
New Jerusalem's Chief Engineer Melville is a fascinating character, rough around the edges but with a lot going on underneath. She has to grapple with the implications of what you will discover in the Megastructure and Rachel Atkins brought that process to life beautifully.
Byron's best friend Alcatraz does not share his ideas and worries that humanity will repeat the mistakes of the past. We needed someone who could play this less optimistic perspective with warmth and honesty. It was hard to find the right actor, but Ian Porter blew us away.
Cornelius is a pivotal figure in the history of New Jerusalem, a figure of great wisdom and emotional depth, and we approached Sean Branney for this part because we were certain he could deliver. He did, in spades.
Miranda is a mysterious and important character tied to the history of the Megastructure. She sees a great deal of beauty in the world, and we needed someone who could really convey her sense of wonder. Grace Hogg-Robinson was absolutely perfect.
Trevor was a coworker of Alexandra Drennan's. His recordings give us a different perspective of the events at the Institute for Applied Noematics. Who could play this lovable working-class guy? Only the one it was written for: Joe Lynch.
The man who defined the Talos Principle itself also makes an appearance, and casting Straton of Stageira was not easy! Until we heard Howard Ward, who captured the voice of a brilliant, complex man who didn't get along terribly well with the philosophers of his own time.
Lifthrasir is a mysterious, eccentric explorer with a uniquely harsh philosophical perspective. He seems to have preceded you on the island - if you can find them, his recordings may challenge your views on Nature and humanity. David Annen really grasped the character's voice.
And of course it wouldn't be a Talos game without Tim Watson's flawless performance of ELOHIM, whose role in the story is much gentler this time.
