Dear Beecarbonize players,
It’s been a while! Be assured that we are still very much delighted how many of you played our humble climate strategy game. In many ways, Beecarbonize is baked into the DNA of our studio. Including our continuing interest in strategy/puzzle games and how they can intertwine with socially impactful topics.
That brings us to Playing Prague, our new puzzle/strategy game.
We think you might like it:
View game pagePlaying Prague takes you on a tour of Prague, a city we live and work in. The gameplay tasks you with combining symbols taken from historical houses into intricate patterns to clear each level, all the while discovering and collecting monuments and meeting historical figures.
These include Prague Castle, Franz Kafka, Old Town Square or the queen of Bohemia herself. That’s 60 collectibles in total!
The first level pack (6 levels) is free, but you can support the game by getting two DLCs (2x5 levels) for a price of a coffee.
Albeit not exactly like Beecarbonize, we see Playing Prague as an extension of our approach that was already there when we released our carbon-cutting game three years ago.
Hope you like it, leave a review and happy playing,

It’s called Playing Prague and design-wise, it follows in Beecarbonize’s footsteps. Playing Prague is a cozy puzzler, where you build your own bohemian city by placing cards with symbols from historical houses of Prague. It’s a challenge for both casual and experienced puzzle fans and during gameplay, you’ll also learn something about Prague, its history and important personalities like Mozart of Kafka tied with it.
Thanks to a partnership with city agency Prague City Tourism, it is 100% free.
We wanted to pay tribute to the city we live in and love. Inspired by cozy city-builder games, this mobile-first title is both a logical challenge as well as an atmospheric experience.
It’s a relaxing puzzle game in which Prague comes alive. Discover the bohemian city and make it your own by creating your own little Prague – all the while solving game levels by placing cards with ancient symbols from Prague houses.
And if you try it out, let us know how you like the game – preferably by leaving a review on the stores. Thanks for playing!

Hi! I am truly moved as I write this – more than five years ago, when I joined an informal group of developers at Charles University, I did not imagine myself writing an article to celebrate the fifth birthday of a proper studio that emerged out of it.
Yet, here we are! ⭐️ And since half a decade is not nothing, we have prepared some special things for you. Keep reading and remember: we are where we are in large part thanks to you, for keeping us company all these years. So, thank you from all of us at Charles Games.
To remind ourselves of the journey we've made so far, we created a little video. It is a look back at our humble beginnings as well as our subsequent accomplishments, featuring archive materials as well as commentary by our developers. We hope you like it – yes, you, specifically you, because without you, there would be no us.
Because we are truly grateful to you, our fans, without whom we wouldn’t be able to have made it so far. So, thank you, enjoy, and let’s meet soon. There will be many opportunities to do so in the near future.
The story of Charles Games begins way back in the 2010s, when people from multiple faculties of Charles University gathered to work on serious games. Their passion later made Attentat 1942 happen in 2017 – a game that went on to collect numerous awards, steering the direction of the then-assembling studio. Charles Games was founded in 2020, and Attentat 1942 was there once again, its mobile release being the first title the studio released, along with the next chapter in the form of Svoboda 1945: Liberation.
Since then, we have tried to craft a team and a company that wants something more out of games: to create titles that make an impact, that can be part of the conversation around important topics while remaining engaging. Now, in 2025, it is safe to say that it looks like we have succeeded.
A special occasion calls for special content, and what better way to capture one’s own path than with a timeline? Believe it or not, it also helped us put things in perspective – only after pausing in front of an empty document did we realize that we've done quite a lot over the last five years.
The fact that we’re still here and that we have multiple unannounced projects in the works is a testament to the demand for games about difficult topics, works that utilize interactivity in ways that go beyond entertainment. Not that there’s anything wrong with video games as leisure, but with our creations, we hope to push the whole medium forward at least a little bit. Because, in the end, we truly believe in the power of games to be an expressive medium of the 21st century.
And we can’t wait to show you more of what we’re working on. It’s going to be great, and it will come very soon.

Our dearest Beecarbonize players and emission mitigators, We are so excited to announce that our new game Velvet 89 is finally out and for free!
Velvet 89 takes you on a trip across the revolting country – from cautious ecology-themed protests to huge crowds. Investigate the moments before police brutally attacked a peaceful demonstration and unveil the stories of those who decided to speak up.
With Velvet 89 we put a lot of effort into a) making sure the history is represented in a nuanced and truthful manner and b) stylized visuals with a paper-like quality to them.
Velvet 89 is also available on both phone and tablet devices, on App Store and Google Play so you can explore it on whichever platform you prefer. Dive in and experience the story wherever you are!
We'd love to hear your thoughts! Leave us a review, drop a comment, and share your perspective on the power of protests—how they have shaped history and how they continue to inspire change today.

Our very dear Playing Kafka players, I am so happy to announce a new game by Charles Games coming in October 2024!
Velvet 89 is a free game that will take you to the streets of several Czechoslovak cities, full of people who decided to speak up against an unjust regime – and a title attentive to some of the overlooked aspects of it all.
It’s twice a first for Charles Games – a hidden-object game (we just love Hidden Folks) and a game about perhaps the most significant topic our country’s history in the last 35 years: The Velvet Revolution! We will let our new Steam page (including teaser!) to speak for itself:
With Velvet 89 we put a lot of effort into a) making sure the history is represented in a nuanced and truthful manner and b) stylized visuals with a paper-like quality to them.
You’ll be the judge of how successful we were in the fall, but until then, spread the word, wishlist (it helps) and look forward to the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution with us and Velvet 89.

Thank you for being along for the ride!
A lot of you keep asking us how you can support our game. The best thing to do is to sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop, check out our newest game and talk about what we do at Charles Games. Or come to our Discord. We are nice people, I promise.

It’s an adventure that adapts three works by Kafka, was made with Kafka experts, is fully voiced and takes about 1.5 hour to finish. A game full of impenetrable schemes, based on Kafka’s work and life.

It comes out May 21 here, on Steam, 100% free. The fully-voiced game (in English, German and Czech) was developed with Kafka experts.
We poured our hearts (and evenings reading The Castle, The Trial and Letter to His Father) into the game. If you like what you see, wishlist, spread the word and help us
Playing Kafka follows in the footsteps of Svoboda 1945 and Attentat 1942. A narrative adventure that adapts three books, but is still rooted in real-life: Kafka’s biography as well as his apt social criticism.
Check it out: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2911850/Playing_Kafka/
We are really proud, so I hope you’ll also allow me to share the latest trailer, showcasing all the three chapters, based on three Kafka’s books: The Trial, The Castle and Letter to his Father.

Hi everybody! We are so excited we can show you our next game: narrative adventure Playing Kafka!
To keep things short, let me just say that it will have three chapters, will adapt three works of Franz Kafka and it’s gonna be free and fully voiced in three languages!
Welcome to Playing Kafka, an adventure about the alienation of modern society as well as unresolved family issues. Created with leading Kafka experts.
Head below to our Steam page to learn everything about Playing Kafka, a game full of impenetrable schemes, insidious plot twists and conversations that slip out of hand:

Hello everyone!
In March, Beecarbonize turned one, so we figured we might make something special. And now, it’s here – a free anniversary digital artbook!
It includes 32 pages with highly detailed illustrations found on cards and elsewhere in the game. Perhaps you were too busy saving the world for check them out in detail. Now you can :)
For the sake of size, we did not include every single one of art present in Beecarbonize, but most of them made the cut.
Thank you for your continued support and for giving the game a lot of love! I really mean it. It is also nice you like the game so much you keep asking for updates – but with the funding the project had, it is not something I can really promise. Thanks for understanding.

Your interest in Beecarbonize has been both exceedingly heartwarming and higher than we anticipated – especially true here on Steam, where it’s been a joy to watch you discuss our game, reverse-engineer its systems, race to be the fastest player to save the Earth. Yet, in our case, a single game does not make a studio.
So, while Beecarbonize has kept us busy for a considerable while, there are other things we are working on and will be in the foreseeable future. So, I thought I’d give you a rundown of what to expect from Charles Games in coming months and years.
And trust me, I wish I would be able to promise you the DLC so many of you have been asking for, new localizations or new content, but I can’t. We are still looking for options, but since Beecarbonize was developed thanks to our partners and a grant opportunity, the constraints are many. Thanks for understanding-
Let me, then, point your attention towards what we are working on now.
This game has been keeping us busy a lot, it is a very Czechia-related theme after all, a light puzzle adventure to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this singular writer’s death.
It has three parts, each based on some of Kafka’s works – The Trial, The Castle and Letter to His Father. In the first, the protagonist K becomes a subject of perplexing legal process, unclear charges and thrown among characters who seem to want to help him, but can’t be fully trusted, either. Can you wrestle out of this unfortunate situation?
Second chapter, The Castle, takes place among the snow and starts in a village, where a land surveyor arrives for work, only to find himself accompanied by helpers he never asked for, affection he never anticipated and machinations happening in the castle he can’t understand. Is there even a job? Is, perhaps, he even a surveyor?
In Playing Kafka, dream logic is in full swing, a game where nothing can be taken for granted. Check out our teaser trailer for the first two chapters:
Third part, the Letter to His Father is a special case, as it’s not based on a novel, but on an actual letter Kafka wrote to his father, recounting his fraught relationship with him and working through many memories of the writer's upbringing.
Playing Kafka will be released in May 2024, on mobile and we hope as well on Steam (still working on this, if you’d like to see it here, leave a comment!)
The game page is incoming soon, but for now, follow our creator profile to stay in the loop. And there’s a website, too.
🧸 Project “Toys” (working title)
Next up is a three-year game we are creating with the War Childhood Museum in Sarajevo, standing next to our historical games Attentat 1942 and Svoboda 1945.
Toys is a narrative game that explores the fates of a group of children during war through non-linear storytelling. It takes players on an emotional journey about children caught in war zones, illustrates their daily struggles, and lets players uncover the story of a particular group of children across multiple decades.
The game is inspired by real stories about war childhood in three different conflicts. The branching story is intertwined with light puzzles. You will experience derelict playgrounds, impromptu shelters, and streets reduced to rubble - all from the often-overlooked perspective of a child witnessing violent conflict.
There is fear and grief, but also hope and resilience, perhaps more than you’d expect.
Toys will be coming to Steam in 2026.
🪧 Project “Velvet” (working title)
Would you play a hidden-object game about the fall of communism? Our next game after Playing Kafka will be just that, letting you explore protests that erupted in 1989 in many places of the Czech Republic during the Velvet revolution that ended the one-party rule. We want to focus on less known events and the game will feature memories of actual witnesses.
It is coming to Steam in 2024.
🍬 Unannounced fourth project, a sweet one
We can’t say much, only that this game will be our very own IP. And that history as well as pastries will play some role.
And, you guessed it, it is coming to Steam, too! Timeline to be announced.
—
So, there you have it! One of the perks of doing games in the style we do is that we always have multiple projects and games in mind and on our plates – so I hope at least some of them have sparked your interest!
We are thrilled to a) show you more b) bring them to Steam and see what you think.
And if you allow me to be a little personal, taking care of Beecarbonize has been such a community management treat in big part thanks to you and how vibrant you made it all to be.

Hi everybody! Hope you had a great start of the year. I spend the first weeks digging into some Beecarbonize numbers and I can show you now! So, if you are interested in some statistics about playtimes, players and devices, read on!
I decided to check on some non-Steam stats as well. So first up, a general platform breakdown:
Again, thank you so much our Steam players here as you make the biggest portion!
Up next, Steam-specific minimum time played. The percentage here is of all players and, kinda intuitively, it gets lower and lower as we approach the 10-hour playtime mark:
Still crazy tho that there are 2% of you who are 10+ hours in! Remarkable. It also means that half of you spent 1 hour in hour game which is honestly more than we could’ve asked for.
Speaking of playtime, two stats are interesting here – a median and an average playtime:
That’s beautiful! What this tells us, in lieu of the first graph, that there is a significant portion of hardcore Beecarbonize players, dragging up the average playtime :) Thanks!
Last graphs I have today are Apple-specific. Our game was actually first released on mobile and since Apple is the biggest mobile platform, I will just leave it here if someone of you finds it interesting:
Mad shoutout to these 0.1% of iPod users. Which is like 43 people. Wow.
We have a strong US game, apparently! But Germany being up there is indeed heartwarming.
So that is all for today.
We are still looking into some ways we might continue working on Beecarbonize, but nothing is sure yet. I will let you know! And thanks for still playing, reviewing and discussing our game. It keeps ups motivated with our otherprojects.
Talk to you soon and take care, Ondřej Charles Games

Dear players! First of all thanks so much as this year was such a joyride thanks to your overwhelming support and nice feedback. To recap all that, I have gathered some numbers from Steam, run them through our proprietary data analysis (me and Excel) and now I have some nice charts to show you.
So without further ado... region breakdown!
Asia was going strong particularly thanks to China. Thank you!
Then, we took a closer look at other player numbers. Over 7 thousand daily active users is a big heartwarming statistical hug for us!
And how many of you have played the game at the same time?
Now it’s time for the total number of Beecarbonize(s?) in the library:
Thanks to everyone who gave us a review. A ratio that I am inclined to printout and hang in our studio.
And last, but not least, the achievements. The data is a bit approximate calculated from the total downloads of Beecarbonize on Steam, but arguably big kudos to the almost 900 climate speedrunners!
So that’s a wrap for this year! We are thinking about ways we can continue working and expanding Beecarbonize, but I don’t have anything definite to share with you yet. Keep your fingers crossed!
And let me reiterate:
Thank. You.
When we launched Beecarbonize on Steam, we never would have guessed there would be over 160 000 of you, who'd be into playing a humble climate card strategy survival game, arguably a little bit roguelike-adjacent resource management sim game. But there was. Which is the best gift we could have gotten.
Hello! To be completely honest, we think we did something interesting with Beecarbonize. We reached 200k players with a game about climate crisis, in a genre that managed to entice so many of you. We did not plan on Beecarbonize getting so big, but thanks to you, here we are! 💚

And what is also upon us are the Steam Awards. This year, you can nominate US, if you like what we’re doing. Most innovative gameplay feels like a fitting category. What do you think?
If you agree with us, we’d be happy if you cast your vote! It might not look like much, but means a lot to us.
Let’s get those medals, maybe. Either way, the journey was amazing.

IndieCade is just great with interesting games nominated alongside with us - including our personal favorites Blue Suburbia, Dead Pets Unleashed, He Fucked the Girl out of Me or World of Horror. Congratulations to everybody!

Hi to all, hope your summer concluded in the best possible way.
Ours sure did – the past month at the office was so much fun due to all the fanart you sent us and all the debates we had about who should win. In the end, it was tough, but we decided. Let's take a look!
FAN ART CONTEST WINNERS ARE HERE!
About a month ago we asked you to make any art inspired by the world of Beecarbonize and boy oh boy you did not dissapoint. :)
As we promised the prizes will be sent as follows:
- 1st place will receive a very special set of physical Beecarbonize memorabilia. Stickers included! - 2nd place will receive codes for Attentat 1942 and Svoboda 1945!
So without further ado...
1st place goes to Victor Burel for his work "A Game of Balance"!
It is intricate, it is heartfelt and it beautifully expands on the topics we put into game. Btw I love how Victor reimagined the wolf from our cards at the bottom. Just gorgeous. Find him on LinkedIn and Discord as "yoshire".
Congratulations and we will be in touch!
Now for...
the 2nd place – Grim Solutions Card Pack by iВазовский
We were truly blown away but a scope of this! A whole bunch of new cards: Titan crack, Rule of Nature, Descent of God, Synthetid Evolution, we love the mall. Also the reverse-engineering and art-alingment care iВазовский took is tremendous. We would love if this would be a mod made for the game.
You can check the template by iВазовский for making your own cards in our Community tab. Give iВазовский some love and we will be in touch regarding the codes.
3rd place – pixelated bee by Kade Captain
We love pixel art and we love bees so this is a perfect conjunction of both. Great work with the background shading and the Bee’s shine. Plain nice!
And now for the honorable mentions...
A very, very kind bee by never-there (love the Windows XP throwback background and check their IG and DeviantArt!)
A bulgy eyed bee by Ruairidh (look at the smile!)
A bee in crayon and pencil by Alex H (we love how realistic it is!)
So thank you everybody! It has been a tough call and we are thankful to everybody who submitted their work! We will be very probably hosting more events like these in the future so be on a lookout. And thanks for playing and being in the community with us. A heartwarming place.

Hello and what a great day!
Thanks to a valiant effort of you, our community, Beecarbonize is now more accessible to more than a billion people 😲 💚
That hopefully means more climate awareness, richer community and possibly even more saved bees (the right ones) and sequestered carbon. The update is now live on Mac, PC as well as iOS. Android is coming a bit later. And we’d be grateful if you told your French, Portugese or Spanish speaking friends who might be interested!
Thanks for your continued support as we wouldn’t be able to do it without you.
Give it up for these community heroes and heroines!
We love you all! And we will think about some way how to give you even more glorious thanks.
Until then, take care everybody. And get in there to save some bees. They need it.

Amazing. Just amazing. And Steam accounts for more than 50% of players so that’s a big bow to everybody here, keeping Beecarbonize alive and well.
Thank you and we are off to celebrate... after we give the language update another round of testing and polishing. Drops really soon. Stay tuned and thank you so much. You give us hope that there is indeed a lot of players receptive towards environmental topics.

The support, the offers to translate, all your engagement is much more than we’d hoped for in our wildest dreams when preparing for the Steam release. We are also closing in on a 200K mark across all platforms (meaning you, dear Steam players, make more than 50% of our playerbase!) and I personally would not have guessed it. Blown aback, simply put.
More languages coming real soon, so hang in tight and keep on saving the planet. There’s a fanart deadline closing soon so be sure to check it out:
