Being the writer of The 7th Guest VR is a distinct privilege. I am incredibly proud of not just my role but the hard work of the entire Vertigo Games team. To reboot the 1993 classic PC experience by Trilobyte and Virgin Interactive Entertainment is an honor and responsibility I did not take lightly.

Fans are going to see so much of what they love about the original game, that melding of the classic haunted house dinner party genre with the video game form, resulting in something wholly original.

Honestly, we had the same challenge that had to have been faced by the original team: how do we write something that feels modern and relevant but also fits into the 1920s/1930s time period that makes this concept so exciting to our audience? Threading that needle is how you make a classic. And our hope is that this iteration of The 7th Guest will be a worthy successor to the original.

Replaying the original game as an adult allowed me to focus on the ideas that make The 7th Guest so appealing. In particular, I think the entire game hinges on Stauf’s quest for revenge. But, also, there is this humor in the self-absorption of the guests that is funny and weird and charming. We might live in a more enlightened time than when the game is set, but humans will always be self-absorbed and vengeful. That tension makes this story timeless.
The plot of The 7th Guest reminds me of those great stories that blend horror, mystery, and witty banter, like Clue or The House on Haunted Hill (1959) starring Vincent Price. In these stories, you have this big, mysterious place and these more minor, personal mysteries woven throughout.
Shirley Jackson is a hero of mine. And, her ability to bring together horror elements and social issues was groundbreaking and so influential. It is such a fantastic opportunity to play in that kind of sandbox. Not to spoil too much, but I think with Stauf’s story, we’ve channeled some of that, touching on themes of mortality and humanity in a fresh, fun, and frightening way.
One area I knew I wanted to interrogate was the character of Martine Burden. In the original game, her motives and desperation felt a bit too close to the surface. We created a more well-rounded, humanized female character by breaking open her backstory and delving into why she decided to go to the house (to reboot her once-glamorous theatrical career).
I imagined actresses like Susan Sarandon and Barbara Stanwyck embodying her clever and cunning air. In the end, it was Daniella Down’s uniquely specific choices that breathed life into this fascinating character.
Getting that tone right is tricky. While deeply inspired by and nostalgic for the source material, we also saw beautiful opportunities for world expansion and character development that could only exist in VR.
Collaborating closely with accomplished game director Paul van der Meer and his multidisciplinary team, we used creative problem-solving to write for the limitations of volumetric video and made the most cinematic experience possible.
Players can look forward to being inside full scenes, surrounded by world-class actors working at the top of their crafts. And the dev team’s ability to integrate this story with groundbreaking technology is awe-inspiring.

October 19 can’t come soon enough!

This week's dev update comes directly from the mind behind our eerie and atmospheric audio director, Jonathan van den Wijngaarden, and a special note & video from The Fat Man - original composer of iconic 90s The 7th Guest PC Classic.

'Working on the 7th Guest VR has been an exciting experience. When the team at Vertigo approached me first, I felt both excited and slightly intimidated! The original game is such a legendary title and still holds a very dedicated fanbase even today. From the very first moment I’ve felt doing right to both the iconic work done by George (Sanger) and to the fans would be my very first goal.

It quickly became clear that we’d be retelling the original story while adapting it for modern audiences and not in the least; the new platform. Music and sound should also follow this direction, and to me it felt doing a literal remake of the soundtrack would not do justice to this approach (also; it didn’t feel right to ‘redo’ the work done by George for the original). Instead I wanted to capture the essence and feel of the original music and make this the center of this new score.

That said, George’s work obviously was a huge source of inspiration and many of the original themes and motifs return. I made a selection of the original themes that to me felt most memorable and used those as a starting point for writing the new material. All music is adaptive in nature, which allows us to transition to a different variation once you solve a room.

The original had a very interesting blend of styles and instruments and I really wanted to bring this back in order to establish a unique sound. We have an incredible group of musicians lending their talents to this score; Lara Ausensi on vocals, Frank Klepacki on drums, Hannes Frischat on cello, Nathan Madsen on saxophone and even The Fatman himself on guitar and vocals!'

George, what can you tell us, as the original composer of The 7th Guest, what was your reaction when you heard that Vertigo Games was planning a VR remake of this iconic game?

'"About time!" It's a perfect fit. The original game introduced a million or two players to the world of content-rich games, of CD-ROM's, of General MIDI music, of digitally recorded sound and music and some cutting edge FMV. The game's atmosphere of exploration, immersion, and puzzle solving was just right for introducing new technology, and I can see it onboarding a lot of folks into VR in the same fun, cool, SCARY way.'

'Thanks George! We also made sure the house feels alive in terms of sound design and weird noises. There are quite some chilling ambiances throughout that are very surreal in nature at times. Everything works towards something that has the player on edge, not knowing what to expect next - to me this is what made the original game so impactful. Last but not least, seeing the volumetric video come to life with music, sound design and voices was a very cool experience. A lot of effort went into making this all work, hats off to the tech team for solving that puzzle!'

In the depths of another eerie week, a dev post emerges, beckoning you to peer into the shadowy realms of the illustrious volumetric shoots.

For those who remember, the original 7th Guest had a fun and engaging story told through full motion video. In those bygone days, the animated pre-rendered graphics and full motion video were absolute technological breakthroughs, made possible in part by the availability of cd-rom drives.

In our VR version we want to give that same sense of awe by putting the players inside the beautifully real-time rendered mansion and show the ghostly videos with a special 3d technology called Volumetric video. This technology allows players to experience the ghostly flashback from all sides, and as close as possible, in a way only possible in VR.

Since projecting anything on a flat plane in VR simply falls flat and hollow, we devised a different path, a path that would rekindle the essence of those bewitching filmed sequences. An obvious choice would be to use rigged 3D-characters, but that didn't feel in line with the spirit of the original which had 'real actors'. So we went with Volumetric Video, captured at 4DR Studios using a 4DViews system.

Plus, In order to get those impressive captures to work on standalone headsets we needed the amazing compression abilities of HoloSuite, using HoloEdit by Arcturus. This allowed us to film actual actors, complete in wardrobe, and play their captured meshes back in the game.

BUT WHAT ARE VOLUMETRICS, REALLY?

Volumetric video is like 'bullet time' from the Matrix. The actors stand in the middle of a circle while they're being filmed by cameras all around them. The result is a series of meshes with textures that update each frame. You really have that sensation of being in the same room as the actors.

The transition from the original capture to the in-game scenes is astounding, capturing every detail, from the folds in a dress to the subtle movements of a jacket. The actors' performances come to life with nuanced expressions like eye rolls and smirks.

We can’t wait for you to see it in ‘real life’.

It’s been a spectral soiree of emotions since the unveiling of The 7th Guest VR, and we are excited to share a little more on our beautifully haunting game, coming later this year!

For those unfamiliar with The 7th Guest, it was a supernatural mystery puzzle game that captivated audiences in the 90s. The game invited players to explore a haunting mansion where six guests had been summoned by the enigmatic and wealthy toymaker, Henry Stauf. Each room housed a unique puzzle, and upon solving it, players witnessed ghostly videos depicting the fate of the unfortunate guests.

As we stay faithful to the original story, we have expanded upon the characters, delving deeper into their backgrounds to enhance the overall narrative.

Moreover, we have meticulously redesigned the puzzles from the ground up, ensuring that each one takes full advantage of the immersive nature of VR.

For instance, the original cake puzzle is iconic with its sickly green glazing and skull and tombstone motif, but it was also in essence a 2D-puzzle and we wanted to add that third dimension to it. We stuck with the same principle where you need to make groups out of the pieces. But by placing it on a cylinder that you could rotate it became more tactile and also a bit more challenging as you couldn't ever see the entire layout at once. For those feeling peckish, there might still be some cake to be found.

Ideally we wanted the puzzles to be as integrated into the rooms as possible and for the library we took that very literally, by turning the walls and furniture into parts of the puzzle layout. We came up with a fun way to move life-size bookcases around the room. It also gives a nice sense of progression as you start in the Library without any books and by the end you bring it back to its original bookshelved glory.

The release of The 7th Guest VR is drawing nearer, and we can hardly contain our excitement. We invite you to immerse yourself in this hauntingly beautiful world, where mysteries await and puzzles beg to be solved.
