Hey everyone! Welcome to our fourth devlog about the development of Overhours! Today we've got the sound designer of Overhours- Darshan, to talk a little about the sound effects (sfx) he's designed for us over the span of 1-2 years 🎛️
🎙️ "I find inspiration in the sound crafting in the other games, shows, and real life influences. I love taking references from other media, as it helps me build my internal library on what something should, and could sound."
"An example of this would be Mai’s Skill, the Time Stop. When I think of anything that has an ability that stops time, I’ll always go with Dio’s 🗣️The World🗣️ from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure! Just the larger than life clock ticks, and absurd bass boosted style from the anime, tied to an iconic villain makes it so memorable."

"For the voices, we first thought of using voices for the characters, but eventually decided that it’s better for the game to keep it voiceless. The idea was then to have some kind of gibberish that is unique to the characters in the game. There were a few ideas for this! Main ones being Ace Attorney, and Undertale, to give the character text a texture, pitch shifts, and changes in speed to give their “voices” a sound that belongs to them. Jing’s voice in particular was very much inspired by Animal Crossing’s cutesy, yappy sounds, and was even sampled from a cat!"

"The environment, props and traps in the game have a lot of real world textures used in them. In populating the world with sound, I wanted it to feel alive, and referencing the works of Supergiant Games from Bastion, to Hades, is rich with sounds that make it feel rewarding for paying attention to their world. Even for the Traps and Towers, the goal was to use sounds I could find and make in an office, to keep it all thematic. Do stand by the tree trunks for animal noises, printers for, uh, printer noises, and even the doors for some magical (or not) aura sounds!"
