You find yourself in a mysterious room, dimly lit by the pale light of a fireplace. Before stepping into the darkness ahead, you grab a single match, which you can later use to briefly illuminate the gloom. Upon leaving the room, the game shifts you into a 2D perspective. From this map view, you’ll trace your steps through the rooms of the enigmatic Mansion, searching for puzzle pieces to assemble the bigger picture and uncover answers to what this place is, why you are here, and what is really happening.
The mentioned match will aid you in scouting around in 3D mode. You'll have only as much time as it takes for the flame to consume its wooden body before darkness falls and you find yourself back in the room with the fireplace.
You'll have to return to this place many times, retracing your earlier steps and using the knowledge gained to progress further and unravel the mystery.
The Great Below pays tribute to the classic horrors of the PS1 era not just visually but in its gameplay philosophy too. This is one of those games that doesn’t hold your hand, so brace yourself for some challenging puzzles.

"The Great Below Original Soundtrack" and “The Society Bundle” debut alongside the game today. The Great Below Original Soundtrack, crafted by indie artist abstraKt, is not just music – it's an atmospheric masterpiece, enhancing your gaming experience and immersing you fully in the dark, mysterious world of The Great Below. 🎶
Feel the nostalgia of the PSX era as abstraKt skillfully weaves a tapestry of sounds that will evoke a range of emotions – from helplessness and anxiety to a yearning for something lost, reminiscing about past hopes that never materialized, all the way to a murky acceptance of fate.
The first track, "Introduction to Decay," serves as the door to a spiral that only goes down. As you progress in the game, let the music guide you on the same path, descending in tandem with your journey through The Great Below. 🔊
🔥 Check out the “Introduction to Decay” song here:
From abstraKt: The music for The Great Below aims to convey a descent into madness and an ascent to enlightenment in a different way, using twisted pianos and strings stretched and distorted to the limit, along with cult elements like cathedral bells and choirs.
It incorporates a wall of textures and noise that corrupts everything at the same rhythm as you descend. As for influences, I've drawn more from outside the video game industry, taking inspiration from structures and textures from Post-Metal to Industrial, from Electronica to Ambient, with bands like Amenra, The Haxan Cloak, Forest Swords, or Lingua Ignota, and Akira Yamaoka as a major influence within the industry. 🎮🎶
Face the unknown, conquer your fears, and unravel the secrets within "The Great Below." 💀

You gaze upon the last page of the journal. There, you discover a tucked-away letter, written in a hand different from the journal's.
You are a Pilgrim of truth, your journey is just beginning.

You flip the pages of the journal. The sheets rustle beneath your fingers. A chilling stillness hangs in the air, as if the entire surroundings have frozen in anticipation. Silence hisses in your ears as you read the entry hastily scrawled by the author's trembling hand—a hurried account, perhaps born of panic, or maybe desperation. The air thickens with an ominous presence, as if unseen threats lurk within the inked words.
Here I am again. Back at the starting point. Everything begins anew. The walls, they morph when I look away. Everything seems somehow different, yet eerily the same. I recognize these places; I've been here before, but something has changed. Is it me who has changed?
Has it been 10 years, or just 10 minutes? I don't know. The Mansion torments me. It tries to break me. I won't let it. I'll show them. I'll show them all.
They think I'm oblivious. That I don't see! Their eyes gleam in the darkness when I look away. They're conspiring. I need to get out of here. I have no more ideas, nor strength left. I can't be here. No one should be here. Is someone there?
I'm so exhausted. This Mansion... What is this place?... What are these flashes!? Who am I when I look away?
Time flows, and you linger in this room, immersed in the journal. From behind the curtain of darkness beyond the room's exit, you occasionally hear unsettling sounds, and you can't discern whether they are real or if your imagination is playing tricks on you. You sense the mounti
Time flows, and you linger in this room, immersed in the journal. From behind the curtain of darkness beyond the room's exit, you occasionally hear unsettling sounds, and you can't discern whether they are real or if your imagination is playing tricks on you. You sense the mounting tension of the journal's author, which begins to affect you, but you continue reading.
How vast is this estate? Every time I think I'm nearing the goal; another place awaits me. More clues. More mysteries to unravel. More riddles to solve. What are the boundaries of this? When will it end?! I am not alone here. Though I'm uncertain. Sometimes, I see footsteps. Traces of another. They appear on the map. I am torn. Should I seek contact? Is it a friend or a foe? I fear to follow. And yet, I desire nothing more.
At times, I feel the urge to scream. To tear apart this darkness with my voice. I've forgotten how it sounds! But I'm afraid. Afraid that something will answer that call. Yet, what terrifies me the most is that an unbroken silence will follow.
I return to this accursed room. Each time, I leave it carrying what feels like a heavier burden. Though I may count on more light, my match has gained companions…. I must delve into this knowledge. Unravel it. Possess it! ... But despite my efforts, I return to this room. Again and again and again, into infinity.
You spend time in this room, though an irresistible feeling lingers that it's not to your advantage. Still, you can't tear yourself away from the journal, these few memories penned by those who were here before you. The crackling flame in the fireplace dances light on the aged pa
You spend time in this room, though an irresistible feeling lingers that it's not to your advantage. Still, you can't tear yourself away from the journal, these few memories penned by those who were here before you.
The crackling flame in the fireplace dances light on the aged pages of the journal as you continue to read.
I don't know how long I've been in this Mansion; it feels like time is slipping away, losing its meaning here. I wander through its corridors, each time stumbling upon something new that my hands hadn't sensed in the darkness before… But perhaps my surroundings are changing, maybe someone is playing with my sanity, trying to drive me into madness?
My expeditions have borne their first fruits. I managed to reach the upper floor, and the map changed when my feet touched the final step. This house defies the laws of physics; its construction eludes my imagination.
This success has a bitter taste; the fruits of my search are being devoured by larvae. Part of the floor is beyond my reach; I see it clearly on the map, yet no doors lead there. As I tried to open another one, I could swear I heard something, like scratching on the other side. Is someone cursing me? Has the time come to pay a steep price for my deeds?
In one of the rooms, I stumbled upon a peculiar symbol. If I've learned anything so far, it's that phenomena like this are significant to me. I recorded this place in the journal, but I must continue searching; I need more clues.
