System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Edition is the absolute gold standard of remasters

You ever watch those art restoration YouTube channels? The guys who have some bristling kit of arcane brushes, tweezers, spudgers and sponges, and who put them to use painstakingly removing a fine layer of yellow —origin indeterminate—from the surface of masterpiece after masterp

26 years later, System Shock 2's music is a crucial part of its level design, and turning it off is a tragedy

The worst thing I've ever read was this: "Just make sure you turn the music off before you start." It was a throwaway forum post around the launch of Nightdive's System Shock 2 remaster —advice given to a new player asking for tips before their first playthrough... Read more.

The original System Shock 2 is being delisted, so if you want it, act fast

We live in a work where remakes and remasters are a dime a dozen. Diablo 2 Resurrected, Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2: nostalgia sells, and we keep on buying. Earlier this year the titans over at Nightdive dropped a 25th anniversary remaster of System Shock 2 , which released to

Nightdive Studios / Atari have announced that the classic System Shock 2 (1999) is getting delisted from stores on October 10th. Read the full article here:

System Shock 2 (1999) Delisting Notice

System Shock 2 (1999) will be delisted from PC platforms on October 10, 2025. Existing owners of System Shock 2 (1999) will still be able to re-download and play it from their library, but new users will no longer be able to purchase System Shock 2 (1999) as a standalone product.

Adding controller support to the System Shock 2 remaster meant re-recording decades-old voice acting

System Shock 2 opens with playable character creation that also functions as a tutorial. Your trainee goggle-wearing badass walks off the street into a recruitment center and signs up to be a marine, or an engineer, or a psychic black ops agent. Then you choose where you'll be po

Nightdive Studios says System Shock 2's multiplayer was 'so hard to get working' for modern platforms, but you should still 'probably play it in singleplayer first to get the true experience'

One of System Shock 2 's more unusual quirks is how it supports four player co-op. This was extremely rare in PC gaming in general at the tail end of the nineties, and it makes System Shock 2 unique among the classic immersive sims... Read more.

Nightdive's System Shock 2 remaster now supports 26 years of mods and fan missions

Tucked at the bottom of System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Edition's 1.2 patch notes is the whammy I'd been waiting for: "Added support for custom campaigns (fan missions)." Balance mods were good to go from launch, but now 'Shock 2's extensive back catalogue of modded missions and

System Shock 2's alien 'sphincter doors' were made with photos from a dev's colonoscopy

In the latest episode of Nightdive Studios' Deep Dive podcast , System Shock 2 artist and industry veteran Nate Wells shared stories of his time working on the PC gaming classic—including how he sourced an unlikely art asset for the structures built by nasty worm aliens, The Man

System Shock 2 Remastered makes modern triple-A games look bad

When you meet Shodan for the first time in System Shock 2 , she gives you this slideshow recalling some of the events from the original game. Since I'm playing Nightdive's new remaster, and since Nightdive also did its own full remake of the first System Shock, I'd be unsurprised

Ken Levine wanted System Shock 2's final level to be set in outer space, but the idea was shot down by its senior designers: 'They're like dude, we have 14 months to make this game'

System Shock 2 is a PC gaming classic, but much like its spiritual successor Bioshock, its final act isn't as strong as the rest of the game. Its final level—The Body of the Many—swaps out the twisting spaceship corridors of the game's earlier levels for what is basically a giant

System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remastered review

There's a hubris to reviewing a unanimous classic decades after the fact—this mostly applies to guys on YouTube not named Mandalore . Yeah buddy, sure, you've got something to say about Earthbound that nobody cottoned on to before. You really couldn't have said it in less than f

System Shock 2's remaster is delayed for everyone but you and me

Bad news: after over six years in development, Nightdive's remaster of System Shock 2 has been hit by one last delay, for old times' sake. Good news: since you're reading about it on this website, it almost certainly doesn't matter to you... Read more.

The rights to one of the greatest PC games of all time languished in the vault of a Midwestern insurance firm until a frustrated player bugged them about a re-release, 'But they asked me if I wanted to do System Shock 3'

Speaking to Nightdive founder Stephen Kick and VP of business development Larry Kuperman at this year's Game Developers Conference, I was curious about how it felt to be returning to System Shock 2 for the studio's upcoming remaster . After all, I had a loose understanding that S

Nightdive's remaster of System Shock 2, the peak of immersive sims, finally has a release date

Here's my confession: I think I prefer System Shock 2 to Deus Ex. Not that I don't love JC Denton like a son, mind you, it's just that SS2's creepy hallways and pitch-perfect antagonists have taken root in my heart forever... Read more.

System Shock 2 remaster has a new name, and soon it'll have a launch date too

While Half-Life often steals the show and sits fondly in more players' memories, let's not forget that fellow sci-fi FPS series System Shock was just as brilliant and revolutionary. The original game recently got a full remake decades on from when it first opened the FPS genre up

Nightdive's spent 6 years on its update of System Shock 2, so it's now the '25th Anniversary Remaster' and will finally announce its release date on March 20

Being, as I am, a fashionable man with his finger on the pulse, interested in only the latest and greatest that the videogame world has to offer, the game I'm probably most excited about this year is System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition. That's Nightdive's remaster (not remake, let's

One of the greatest FPS games in all of PC history is now just $2

What are the most influential PC games in history? Civilization has to be up there. Doom. Half-Life . I'd definitely throw Baldur's Gate into the hat these days, likewise Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. And you know, it's hard to overstate the significance of The Sims. World of Wa
