Play with Friends (Join Codes)

Playing Nightingale with friends between platforms just got easier. You can now share a Join Code to invite friends directly into your game. The game will automatically find the host and connect using the best available method.

When hosting, select Join Code from the connection options.
Share the code from the Social tab.
Your friend enters the code and joins instantly.

If a direct connection isn’t possible, traffic will route through Valve’s Steam Datagram Relay, a global private network optimized for gaming. Join Codes also support seamless cross-play between Steam and Epic players.

Gameplay Updates

We also have a host of new gameplay and balance updates! This update adds visible wear and damage to tools and clothing based on durability, improves map completion clarity and Essence Trader item presentation, and delivers major reward and balance tuning. Vault Essence rewards are doubled, and chest loot is reworked (fewer perishables, more seeds, and realm-specific item targeting with stronger Ascended rewards). Combat tuning adjusts critical damage scaling and caps, and a broad pass boosts many characteristics to make rare resources more exciting. Augments also get wording cleanup, Danu’s Cauldron returns, and several augment types now apply more consistently across their related refinement stations.

This update brings a host of powerful new Charms, expanded decoration sets, and balance improvements to make your adventures smoother and more rewarding. From the strength of the Charm of Sisyphus and Charm of Atlas to the magic-enhancing Fabled Charms of Arcane Overcharge and Zephyr, there’s something new for everyone to check out.

We’ve also rebalanced one-handed weapons, improved Welkin’s Reach for an improved first experience, and fixed a wide range of bugs to keep you adventuring through the Realms.

New Content

Charm of Sisyphus
- A new charm the Progression tab unlocked in Gloriana's Tears, increased melee damage based on carry weight but lowers critical damage
Charm of Atlas
- A new charm unlocked at the Watch, removes the penalties for being over encumbered
  - This does conflict with Charm of the Mule (One of our most used charms) but now with Charm of Sisyphus it can be used in conjunction as Sisyphus is based on max carry weight if over encumbered. It's also at the Watch so there's plenty of time for Charm of the Mule to shine.
Fabled Charm of Arcane Overcharge
- A new fabled charm for magic which fully consumes stamina to deal additional damage.
Fabled Charm of The Zephyr
- A new fabled charm for magic which allows the player to remain airborne while casting spells and boosting damage while doing so.
Charm of the Nimble Jumper
- A new charm added to the Progression tab unlocked at Welkin's Reach that allows players to double jump.
Charm of the Labourer
- A new charm added to the Progression tab unlocked at Sylvan's Cradle that allows players to go longer between eating and sleeping.
New Decoration sets at the Watch Tileset Essence Merchant
- Crates Collection,

Tweaks for Welkins Reach

Welkins Reach is a divisive realm especially for newer players. It presents new traversal challenges and under prepared players can feel unable to safely move around the realm. So we’ve decided to try to soften players' first impression of the realm with few tweaks.
- Increased Duration of Empyrean Favour in Welkins Reach from 10 minutes > 120 minutes
- Empyrean Favour now persists on Death
  - These changes should prevent issues where players are unsure why they can’t access the well after getting Empyrean Favour
Added Stamina Efficiency buff to Thinned Veil Card.
Added Charm of the Wind to Umbrella gifted to you by Aurelio.

Balance Changes

Generally speaking one handed weapons were weaker than two handed weapons (~33% weaker), this was to counteract the versatility of having an offhand weapon or utility tool. However we may have over evaluated the value of those tools. So we've increased the damage. We've also increased the weapons with lower critical damage more to give them an opportunity to see use in the late game. Weapons like the Knife and Sword have been excluded as they don't need a power increase.
General increase to one handed weapon damage:
- Lancaster Pistols: +20%
- Revolvers: +30%
- Porter Pistols: +20%
- Sickles: +40%
- Build Hammers: +10%
All Mauls: +25% Melee Damage
- Without any crit the maul very quickly lags behind other weapons. Considering its slow attack speed, it's been given a sizeable boost to damage. It should now be able to output the highest non crit DPS in the game.
Increase Backpack Durability by 75 (outside of Tier 0 gear).
- This should curb the issue of your backpack breaking while fighting and becoming encumbered mid fight
Updated Rewards from Realm boss challenges to grant more and reflect the newly unlocked realm
- Ie. Jabberwock challenge now grants essence T2 Essence
Tweaks to Magic Ammo Scaling
- Fire Ammo Base Damage increased from 4 > 20
- Poison Ammo Base Damage increased from 10 > 60
- Cold and Lightning ammo increased Scale cap from 200 > 600
- Magic Ammo was in a weird position with fire and poison being far too weak compared to Cold. So we’ve boosted the damage and increased the Magic value for Cold and Lightning to max out. Hopefully Magic marksman builds will be viable and encourage a more significant dip into magick.
Charm of Blood now modifies magic damage by how much health is lost. Originally it was a 25% increase now it's 50% of the health lost.
- ie. 100 health lost is a 50% increase
- Charm of Blood no longer heals you if you use Charm of the Healer.
Charm of Discharge now uses injury resistance to determine bonus damage.
Buffed Poison Damage from Charm of Assassin by 300% and fixed issue where it wasn't using player melee multiplier to calculate damage
Buffed Bleed Damage from Fabled Charm of the Sickle by 66%
Resting now removes 10% of Hunger bar, unless you're below 25%
- In the previous iteration it would set your hunger to 33%. This created a bad player loop where if you ate before you slept you’d keep your food buffs but would be near starving, forcing players to eat twice or learn not to eat before you sleep. This change should be more kind to new players and not punish experienced players for applying their buffs in an “incorrect” order

How to Play with Friends

To play with your Friends in Nightingale, you have two options: rent a dedicated server or spin up a listen server directly from your PC. In both cases, you’ll need to either select one of your existing characters or create a new one to join or host a game. No matter which option

To play with your Friends in Nightingale, you have two options: rent a dedicated server or spin up a listen server directly from your PC. In both cases, you’ll need to either select one of your existing characters or create a new one to join or host a game.

No matter which option you choose, you can bring existing characters into a friend’s realm and carry progress back to your own world using the Play Solo option.

When starting, create a new character or select one from your roster. If you’d like to use a character that was previously online, choose Download Characters from the main menu to access characters created after the Realms Rebuilt update.

Dedicated Servers

Why choose a dedicated server?
Dedicated servers are ideal for groups who want a persistent world. Because the server runs separately from your game client, your friends can continue exploring even when you log off. If you’re comfortable with port forwarding and server management, you can self-host; otherwise, renting a server through a partner is a convenient option.

How to set up a dedicated server
Since these servers persist beyond your session, you’ll need to arrange hosting, either by running the dedicated-server app on your own machine or by renting one through a partner. See the Dedicated Servers page for detailed setup instructions and hosting partners.

How to join a dedicated server
To join, select Play from the main menu, pick your character, and choose Join a Game. From there, you can connect via Steam or IP/LAN. The host shares the server’s address and port, which you can enter manually into the IP/LAN field. Alternatively, you can use the Steam option to join directly from Steam.

Listen Servers

A listen server is the simplest way to play with friends. It runs inside your game client, meaning your PC hosts the world while you play. They’re quick to set up via the Host a Game option and require no additional software or rentals. However, since the server only exists while the host is online, the game is unavailable once they log off.

How to set up a listen server
After choosing or creating a character, select Host a Game and decide whether to host via Steam or IP/LAN. If you host via Steam, your friends can join you directly through Steam. If you host via IP/LAN, you’ll need to share your IP/LAN address with them and any password you have set.

How to join a listen server
Joining works the same way as with dedicated servers: connect via Steam or enter the host’s IP/LAN address. Remember, the host must remain online for the session to continue.

Realmwalkers, our new Dedicated Servers are now live. To get started, download this update and create a new character or download one of your online characters to play. You can choose to play solo, join, or host a Friend.

Your online characters will continue to be hosted by Inflexion and will be available to download for up to a year. For more information about this update, please check out our last blog post here.

Item Rewards: Players now automatically receive the Cleansing Card when its requirements are met
Fishing & Store: Fishing mini-games have been adjusted and issues in the Porter Pistol shop purchase have been fixed
Weapon Effects: The Ultimate Sickle weapon’s bleed damage has been reworked for clarity
Updated outfits and appearances of several NPCs
Building swapping - In placement mode, added the ability to swap targeted structures with the new structure, with resources being refunded and/or dropped to ground. Tileset pieces and hanging lights/decorations can be swapped out with tileset pieces of the same type (eg. doorframe and a doorframe, but not a doorframe and a wall). Freestanding structures can be swapped if their size matches.

Connect Screen: The Continue button on the host/connect screen now only activates when an address is entered
A Previous/Next host button has been added for easier navigation.

Parties: Parties are now based on who is on a server.
Players now see on-screen notifications when someone joins or leaves their party

Travel Invites: New safeguards automatically deny a travel invite if the host is still on the Continue Journey screen

With the release of our Dedicated Server update on the Public Test Realm (PTR), we hoped to validate two things. First, that the core functionality worked as expected. Second, playing on a Dedicated Server offered a good - or even better - experience to our own hosted infrastructure.

Thanks to those of you who jumped in, we were able to do both. We spotted bugs, got useful feedback, and saw players having fun with some of our new features, like the admin panel and Monikers.

Reevaluating Online Play

With the success of the PTR test and after talking with players in our Discord AMA, we sat down as a studio to talk seriously about Nightingale’s online future.

In our last Dev Diary, we mentioned that the original vision for online play never quite came together as we had imagined. Looking at the data, many players are using our hosting infrastructure to play solo, and only a small fraction are playing in larger five or six person groups. This reality has made it hard to justify continuing to maintain the online infrastructure when we could use those resources elsewhere in development.

With that in mind, we’ve decided to migrate away from the Inflexion-hosted infrastructure and instead focus our development efforts on where players are spending their time most while ensuring you can still play Nightingale for as long as you want.

This is different from our original vision of a connected universe of realms, but the mechanics remain the same. You can still realm dive with your friends by opening portals, or establish connections to Friends realms. Those realms will just be hosted on a distributed server infrastructure rather than a centralized one. With dedicated servers now in place, players can still host games and play with friends. It’s just happening in a different way than we initially imagined.

About Online Characters

It is very important that your online characters and Realms will still be hosted by Inflexion for the foreseeable future to download. We wanted to make it easy to transition to offline play and have made them available for download in the Main Menu.

Once downloaded, you can continue playing solo, join a friend's game, or host one yourself. We've tried to make the process straightforward and will continue to listen to your feedback as we make this transition.

Introducing GPortal Hosting

To support those who want the highest quality multiplayer experience, we’ve worked with GPortal for server hosting. This is a common setup in the survival crafting genre and should make it easier for players to coordinate and play together.

We’ll keep collecting feedback on how Dedicated Servers and GPortal are working, and use that to guide future improvements.

Looking Ahead

We know this shift may not be what some players were expecting or wanting. But it's important to make changes that support the long-term health of the game and the studio.

It’s been a few months since our Nightingale City update and we wanted to take a moment to step back and share where things stand, not just with Nightingale but with some of the broader work going on at Inflexion. More than anything, we want to share how we’re approaching the road ahead.

A lot of our recent work has focused on long-term planning for Inflexion. That of course includes Nightingale, but also other projects we’re exploring as a studio. It’s not always the most visible kind of work, but it’s important, especially now given the realities of today’s games industry. Taking the time to plan well means we can keep developing the games we love.

Reflections on Nightingale

Nightingale has been at the center of many of those conversations. We care deeply about this game. It’s ambitious and complex, and we’ve poured a lot into it. It hasn’t always been easy, but we believe in its potential and in the community that’s come with us this far.

One of the biggest considerations has been our online architecture. From Nightingale’s earliest days, we aimed to create a shared-world experience that let groups of players join together to adventure in the Fae Wilds. The back-end architecture we created delivered that vision, with players connecting realms to other realms with magical portals. The team did a great job. But at the same time it meant constraints and limitations on our overall development speed and on gameplay elements that we’ve never resolved. Now with more than a year of early access, it's clear that many players prefer to play solo or with a few close friends, further complicating what we do going forward.

The other difficult truth is Nightingale’s review status on Steam. It’s nobody’s job but ours to make a game worthy of good reviews. But we’ve been sitting at “Mixed” for a while now, and that hurts because it reflects a gap between what we want the game to be and how it’s being received. Steam reviews matter because they shape how new players see the game and we know we have work to do if we’re going to improve them.

What We’re Doing Next

To address the first challenge, we’re nearly ready to release our dedicated server. This has been in the works for a while, and it will allow you to host a dedicated server the way you do with many other survival games: privately, reliably, and on your own terms, while still enjoying diving realmdiving from realm to realm through portals you build or discover. We’ll have more to say about the specifics on that soon.

As for the Steam review score and the broader player experience, that’s a bigger challenge. There’s no single feature or fix that will solve it. But we’re spending this summer focused on finding the right path forward, one grounded in what we’ve learned since Nightingale's launch.

Humanity’s last stronghold is besieged. The Fae and their formidable Automaton Queen have unleashed chaos, and it falls to you to reclaim our home. Leap across rooftops, clear enemy-infested streets house by house, and explore the intricate network of sewers beneath the city.

Fight your way through three massive city quadrants, confront Bound invasions head-on, close the dangerous Transepts, and activate Pale Pylons to regain control. Your bravery and skill will be tested like never before when you face the fearsome Automaton Queen herself.

Tier 5 weapons have unique visual treatment options both in crafting and in glamour
Tier 5 Fabled Charms can be purchased with the new currency.

Fabled charms will make fantastic changes to the behaviours and powers associated with your weapons and tools. You can earn these as rewards in Nightingale City.

Fixed Tudor Shelf to allow object placement on its shelves.
Fixed an issue preventing the Porter Pistol from appearing in the glamour station for customization.

Nightingale has officially reached its one-year milestone, and we’re here to celebrate with our next update. From a new dyes and customization system to tilesets and long-awaited bug fixes, this update brings plenty to help with your adventures in the Realms.

Dyes and Customization
One of the most anticipated features is finally here: dyes and customization! As added functionality to the Glamour Station, you now have the ability to change the materials and colors of your clothing, gear, and weapons. As soon as you unlock this station, you can start customizing.

Here’s how it works:

When you acquire an item with a specific characteristic that impacts its appearance, that characteristic is permanently unlocked at the Glamour Station.
For example, if you obtain an item with the Gold characteristic, you’ll be able to apply Gold to metals in the dye system from that point forward.
This system does not work retroactively, so you’ll need to obtain new items or pick up items you already have with desired characteristics to unlock their appearances.
For endgame players who’d rather not chase down every material, bundles of appearances are available at the Clothing Vendor in The Watch.

New Tilesets, Outfits, and Furniture
This update also expands building and fashion options with a new Western themed set:

Frontier Tileset – A rugged new aesthetic for those seeking a bold frontier style.
Wrangler Outfit – A stylish new look fit for any adventurer.
New Furniture Sets – Enhance your homestead with additional pieces for the Crude and Tudor tilesets.

NPC Card Game
Looking for a break from exploring the Realms while earning some Essence? Just speak to any of the NPC Survivors to play a match card mini-game where you can bet and win Essence.

Bug Fixes and Quality-of-Life Improvements
Here are some of the most notable improvements from this update:

Fireplaces now stay lit but only consume fuel when actively crafting.
Fixed flickering and blown-out VFX, providing a more visually stable experience.
Controller fixes: LT/RT are no longer double-bound to the Estate Cairn screen.
Improved Portal Meshes: No more squashed platforms when adjusting height.
Lancaster guns now deal proper secondary ability damage.
Essence Trader in Welkin’s Reach no longer gets stuck in an endless question loop.
No more spontaneous umbrella drops! Stay airborne as intended.
Quest NPCs now behave properly, without floating grenades or potions.
Correct climbing animations when injured.
Unique crust effects on tools and weapons now work correctly.
Smoother sprinting mechanics, even when moving toward the camera.
Missing quest markers fixed: The “Talk to Nicolas” marker now appears correctly.

Today we've put out a new update that upgrades Nightingale to Unreal 5.4, as well as bug and quality of life fixes.

Highlights

Engine Upgrade: Updated to Unreal Engine 5.4.
Character Customization: Improved the appearance of lipstick; you may need to re-edit lipstick in the character creator.
Gameplay Mechanics:

Reduced stealth attribute on gear for better balance with other attributes.
Removed structural support requirements, allowing objects to float when building.
Campfires and other fueled structures now turn off automatically after crafting is complete.

Gamepad Updates:
