Say hello to the adorable and cheerful Lily Greenfern, your guide to all things plants, seeds, and garden magic. She’ll be teaching you how to care for your crops with spells!
🐱The spirit cat
The spirit cat that goes along with you in your magical journey has got an update. The previous version was a blob, but this cute new version looks like a gummy cat.
✨Character Customisation
We've made some improvements to the character customisation screen and the uniforms that all apprentices and players will wear in the academy.
We've put special care into the character customisation system, which is the first thing you will experience in a new game. They get to select the uniform colour, hairstyle, and eye colour...
We've even added a special feature to randomise the character selection, and it's a lot of fun to see what apprentice you get.
🐇Creature Care Class 🐇
This is a new class we've implemented, which comes with a new outdoor location in the Kitori Valley, where you will take on fun assignments such as gathering adorable creatures that roam the area and learning how to care for them.
Classes are held in a relaxed, outdoor setting with wooden benches where apprentices can sit back and listen to the lesson while surrounded by nature.
As we implemented this new class, we've also improved our old rabbit, and as part of this class, you will have to understand their behaviour and learn how to properly care for them by feeding them, healing them, and treating them with kindness.

We’re happy to share a new Steam update with you finally.
Over the past months, we’ve been working on many parts of the game behind the scenes, from new areas and characters to gameplay systems, UI improvements, and world details.
There’s a lot we want to show of what we've been working on over the past year. This update will be split into several parts. This is only Part 1; more updates and reveals are coming soon as we continue sharing what’s been added to the game.

📖 The Library 📖
The Academy Library is built as a giant maze-like structure, filled with layered corridors, towering bookshelves, hidden reading halls, and staircases that lead to unexpected passages suspended high above the lower floors.
Different routes connect to study rooms, archives, classrooms, restricted sections, and forgotten corners of the Academy. We wanted the library to feel mysterious and slightly disorienting, like a place that has grown and changed over centuries of magical use.
Strange things happen between the rooms of the library.
The library is not just a place to read books. It is one of the central gameplay spaces in the academy, combining exploration, social interactions, quests, classes, and magical events in a single, connected environment.

👻Unexpected Events👻
We’ve also continued expanding the “Unexpected Events” system.
Unexpected Events are magical anomalies that can appear dynamically throughout the academy and temporarily alter areas by introducing unique objectives, creatures, threats, and rewards.
Here is an example of an unexpected event.
Floating, squid-like creatures are invading a section of the library, tinting the walls, floors, and furniture with ink.
The affected rooms become corrupted by magical residue, creating unstable zones that apprentices have to navigate carefully.

You, as an apprentice, will have the chance to contain the situation with spells, avoiding the squids and the ink.
We designed these events to make the academy feel alive and unpredictable. A regular visit to the library can suddenly become a magical cleanup operation full of environmental changes and hostile magical creatures.

Unexpected Events can appear across different academy locations, each with its own mechanics, rewards, and magical phenomena.

This is Agatha, the spell-caster teacher, who will teach you all about spells.

We've been working hard these past months, brewing tons of new features and improvements for Kitori Academy. The magic is starting to come alive!
🌱Greenhouse and botanic classroom🌱
Little by little, we’re filling the Academy with classrooms, hidden rooms, hallways, and exciting secrets waiting to be discovered.
Our latest addition? The Greenhouse! 🌿✨ This is where players will dive into the world of crops, plants, and harvesting. Just like the other classrooms, it will have:
🕰️ Scheduled Classes – Attend at the right time to participate!
👩‍🏫 A Dedicated Teacher – Ready to guide you through your botanical journey.
🎁 Fun Rewards! – Expect seeds, buffs for your crops, and other surprises.
✨NPC Schedule✨
One of the most overwhelmingly popular requests from our community has been to make the academy's students feel truly alive, creating a more immersive and vibrant world for players to explore.
For the past months, we have been working on the NPC system to make the Apprentices NPC feel like real people walking. So, for this huge task, we've added a few more exciting things:
✨They have their schedules during the day; they have a stack of behaviours that are selected depending on the weather, the day of the week and other conditions.
🗣️They can also interact with other NPCs and talk among themselves (just like in real life!)
🪑They also do other things, such as sitting on benches and leaning on walls.
We hope to have this system more refined and show you a little video of how it looks. For now, you can look at these pictures; we use those dummies to simulate these behaviours and save them in memory but don't worry, they will become proper NPCs when the player is around!
🌟Miscellaneous Updates!🌟
NPCs now appear in class cinematic when players decide to start a class to keep up with their magical studies!
We've added 4 new crops, but as you can observe in the picture, they are not regular crops; we enjoy taking vegetables and fruits and giving them a little twist.
In the following picture, we have crops that could resemble berries, turnips and peppers.
Currently we have a mixture of special and regular crops!

We've been busy busy this past month, adding tons of new cool things to Kitori Academy. The game is looking great!
🎭Unexpected Events🎭
We are implementing a new exciting gameplay feature, Unexpected Events!
This has always been in the game, but it needed some integration with the rest of the game systems. We are also creating content for this feature, the UI, and 3D assets, which is progressing very well.🎨🛠️
These unexpected events will involve casting spells✨🔮 crafting, little demons... you will see.👀
It is going to be very fun to play!
📚🌟New interiors🌟📚
We are also creating study rooms to place at the Academy. These rooms are secondary and not required for the main story, but they give the Academy a vivid touch. 🎨🎓 Plus, these new interiors play a key role in Unexpected Events.
🔮🌟Potion Classroom Gets a Magical Makeover🌟🔮
Alongside the new rooms, we've been improving other areas of the Academy, making them performance-ready, improving graphics, and improving the overall look and feel.
The Potion Classroom has also changed, with improved graphics and a new layout.⚗️🌿

For the past months, we've focused our efforts on implementing the class progression game feature. This important game mechanic will mostly happen at the academy, where you will attend various classrooms, such as the spell and potion class.
We've also been integrating this critical feature in the game and improving the academy look and field to better suit the gameplay.

🌲Tree plaza improvements🌲
The other important area we've worked hard on is the plaza where the ancient tree rests. It has a new, fresh look and improved buildings.
The tree plaza is surrounded by other buildings where the classrooms are located, and it's the first thing you will see when you enter the academy through the apprentice town.

In this blog, we have even more creatures in the world of Kitori Academy. This time, they are babies! 🐣
🐉Baby fruit dragons🐉
Last time, we showed you the adorable dragons that rest on the trees. The dragons are born from eggs and grow to adulthood along with the tree!
Dragons don't require much attention, but they enjoy a healthy snack and the occasional pet; most of the time, they guard the fruit trees and just be nice little pets to brighten your garden.
But this blog has more cuteness; we also have Jackalope babies 🐇 and Owl babies🦉!
You can care for these babies so they grow strong and happy by petting and feeding them.
We're adding a birth system 🐣 and creatures can become sick as well.
🌽New seasonal crops🌽
We've extended the range of crops you will be able to plant in your garden, as well as pumpkin, carrots and blue tea flowers; we now have:

Strawberry
Turnip
Belladonna
Rosemary

We've been busy adding new creatures, such as fruit dragons, these past months!!
🐉🍓Fruit Dragons🍓🐉
You might remember from previous updates that Kitori Academy's world is filled with cute creatures like owls and jackalopes.
And even more special, you can care for them in the ranch creatures; you can feed and pet them and ensure their homes are clean and tidy.
We went beyond that and added a new type of creature: fruit dragons!
You will be able to raise and care for these adorable dragons as part of the Ranch.
You can think of them as what you might see in other farming games with trees but with a twist.
They won't require as much attention as the other creatures, but they will still need food and sometimes pets...
The tree starts with a dragon egg and a tiny sprout.
Soon after, a tree will fully grow, and your dragon will guard it patiently.
Giving them fish is your task; you will receive fruits and other gifts.
🏕️Improved the ranch creature homes🏕️
We've decided to polish the aspect of the creature's homes, and this new direction looks much better.

Here is a round-up of all the new things we've been adding to Kitori Academy since the last update.
🧙Absorbing Spells and other sparks🧙
Several times, we've presented you with the fire spirits, which will help you with your daily endeavours as a wizard in training.
One of the curious characteristics of these little naughty fires is you can't hold them with your bare hands!
For this reason, you will have to use the absorbing spell you will learn in class.

📜Gameplay Quests and NPCs!📜
We implemented the initial quest system a few months ago and created some basic, simple quests.
Since then, we've been improving this system with more complex quests that involve talking to NPCs, crafting potions, finding places, etc. It's progressing very well and giving Kitori Academy a richer gameplay experience.
We are very excited about this.
Alongside the quest system, we've implemented daily schedules for the NPC that live in the apprentice town.
NPC has their daily schedules and wander around the Town freely; we want to keep improving this system so every corner of the world feels alive.
✨ Front Academy visual improvements ✨
We've made some improvements to the front academy, we've changed the windows and the aspect of the walls.
👀 Secret hideouts 👀
As we build the world of Kitori, including the academy, the apprentice town and the valley, we want to include secrets along the way.
Here is one of the secret hideouts we've already included in the apprentice town, a hidden cave where blue spirit fires await.
Finally, we want to share our TikTok account, where we enjoy posting quick, funny videos about the game's progress.

In this update, we want to show you the new creature of the Ranch: Owls!
We want to include different types of owls you can care for on the Ranch, and here is one of them:
We've also implemented the following features to the ranch system:
You can build different houses for your creatures in dedicated spaces near your cottage.

Owls, Rabbits and more creatures to come will wander around these houses and will have different states. For example, the owls sleep during the day and are more active when the sun goes down
Rabbits sleep at night and are graciously livid, jumping and running during the day.
All creatures will take cover when it's raining!
You will have to put food on their houses, clean them and interact with the creatures.
🐈The Apothecary Shopkeeper🐈
We have a special guest on this blog: The quirky Apothecary shopkeeper!
You will find this intriguing character if you pass by the apothecary shop in the apprentice town.
The shopkeeper will happily sell you seeds, ingredients, and other witchy trinkets for your journey to become a wizard.
You might remember that the shopkeeper is not just the regular shopkeeper; it hides a (well, it's not so well-hidden) fluffy secret under their attire...👀
🤗Last but not least, the HUD!🤗
In the following pictures, you can see the player interface, with a clock on the right side, which indicates the time of day, the weather, and the date...
We've added a broom indicator that will tell you whether you can ride the broom in certain areas. At the bottom, there are 2 different hot bars, the hot bar for items and a secondary hot bar for the spells.
We've also added a mana indicator, indicating how much mana you have left to use with spells. Look at the new interface for the inventory and workstation such as the cauldron.

We are thrilled to announce that Kitori Academy will be part of Simfest 2023 – the Steam festival celebrating all things related to simulation games.
From today through the 24th of July, July 20th at 6pm BST/ 7pm CEST/ 1pm EDT you will be able to experience some of the latest and greatest simulation titles, in addition to what the future holds for the simulation genre with other coming soon games.

We've been working on a new building for Apprentice's Town, the Apothecary.
The Apothecary is a handy shop where you can buy all sorts of seeds, materials and raw ingredients, so you can keep practising your witchy skills and advance in your lessons.
We have a curious feline at night time...
🔥 The spirit house and the Shed🔥
Do you remember those little spirit fires that help you with your potions? Well, they deserve to have their own space!
We've completed the spirit houses, where the fire spells are chilling out, waiting for you to use them under the cauldron.
We also want to show you the Shed, a dedicated space where you can build spirit houses, cauldrons and other workstations. This Shed is located in the back garden, and it will be an essential place whenever you want to practice your witchy skills and feel like going outside the academy.

We've been populating the Apprentice Town with some apprentices scattered around the corners of the Town..
We want to make Apprentice Town and the rest of the areas in the world of Kitori feel alive; for that, we will have simple NPCs wandering around minding their own business.

Hey there!
Kitori Academy is becoming more magical day by day. In the pasts months, we've added new areas, buildings and little critters!
Let's take a look! 👀
🏕️The apprentice Town🏕️
This area is a little town outside the academy, where your cosy cottage is located. It will feature a variety of houses, a town square, a river and some hidden paths and secrets.
Other apprentices and common townfolks will live in this area as well.
The apprentice town is the area between the academy and the valley, and it will allow you to enjoy your time while you are not learning new spells, potions or other witchy things.
🐇The creature ranch 🐇
We are so excited about this new feature! On the back of your cottage, there is a nice area to grow crops, but! You can also place little houses for critters like horned rabbits, owls and bees!
It goes like this; you can place a cute shelter for creatures you must take care for. They will give you resources to craft potions or other witchy things in exchange.
🎮Steam Deck 🎮
We got our hands on a Steam Deck a while ago, and promptly we exported a first build on this console to test. And Kitori Academy will be completely compatible!
From the beginning of the development of this game, we've put a lot of effort into ensuring the game runs smoothly on consoles such as Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch.
We've also made sure you can enjoy your favourite cosy witchy game with a controller, mouse, and keyboard.

Daniela, our new character
Daniela has a unique ability; she can charm ghosts. She enrolled at the academy when she was old enough to study this incredible new ability.
You will usually find her wandering around places with ghostly auras where she feels the most comfortable.
Although she came from a very wealthy family and grew up in her family's manor, she doesn't care much about all that.
And floating around her, we have Tubby, Mochi and Cosmos, the 3 playful doggies you can only see at night. They never leave Daniela's side and are very protective.

What we've been up to in the pasts months? We've focused our efforts in the outside areas of the game, the Valley.
The Kitori Valley
This beautiful and extensive area is full of colourful flowers, leafy trees, bushes and tons of mountains and rivers. 🌠
While living as a wizard apprentice, you might decide to skip your daily magical lessons and explore the Valley with your broom.
It will be an excellent chance to collect ingredients, meet creatures, and find hidden spots.

The cosy cottage
Every day you wake up in your cosy room where your cat companion awaits for pets and treats. Your room is inside the lovely cottage located in the apprentice town, right outside the academy and next to the Kitori Valley.
As shown in the following picture, we've improved the cottage's exterior. The cottage is looking as adorable as ever. A tiny spoiler, right behind the cottage, you will find the garden, where you can harvest fresh crops for your recipes and potions!

We are also very excited to share that we recently moved to Unreal Engine 5, and Kitori Academy looks as impressive as ever.

I would like to formally present you to the first possible character you will be able to be best friends with.
Alexandra is a very sweet and kind apprentice who enjoys quiet times reading books.
She is very shy by nature and will hesitate to approach you for the first time, but she will be very happy to meet you and have the chance to be your acquaintance.
She always carries her umbrella shaped like a hat to protect her from the sun, where the tiny cute Honduran Bats spend most of the day sleeping or fluttering around at late hours.
She has extensive knowledge of ancient magic history and will be of most help if you need to find some facts about a spell or potion.
Home sweet home
You might remember that we showed your several times your cosy home where you will have your bed, a cosy firepit, and books, and don't forget your companion cat will be there waiting for your pets and treats.
And here is a surprise for you, your room is part of a larger cottage outside the academy, where you will cohabit with other apprentices and will be perfect for relaxing or, if you prefer, practising what you've learnt during the day!
The cottage has a common area with chairs, a table, and a basement where you will have some of the workstations you can use to practice potions, a kitchen and other small rooms that will be revealed in the future!

Spells, creatures, unexpected magical events...

We've being working very hard to add exciting new things to Kitori Academy over the past months.
We want to bring you more magic with spells. You will learn different ones in the Spell classroom, and you will have the chance to cast them in different situations.
One exciting feature we are introducing is the concept of unexpected magical events! And what is this? They are... well... unexpected! On a sunny day, you're minding your business caring for your crops, and suddenly Hopinkson asks for your help.
The flying imps, Tignis, are causing trouble in the spell classroom. Run, go and catch them with your new catch spell!
Some apprentices are getting stuck in the library on a green goo that covers the walls and floors...

We have added lots of new cats, from fluffy to hairless. We've also included different types of tails, ears and faces. With all of these variants, you will customize your companion in many different ways!

We are also working on adding more ways to engage with your cat and get bonding points, which will be essential to develop your magical skills...
If you get close to your companion, you will have the option to select pets, minigames or feed.
One of the minigames we are refining is the magical pointer that your cute companion will try to catch.
The magical garden

We've revisited the garden in the botanic class, and we've added more magical elements to the harvesting system. Now wizard apprentices will create patches of soil with the hoe spell where fantastical plants will grow, like the Morning Pumpkin and a flower with the shape of a teapot.

The Ancient Tree plaza

We talked in other posts about the Tree Plaza, the academy's centre, and where other classes and places connect.
We've been rearranging some of the elements of this lovely space and making new flowers, fluffy bushes and other plants.
We want to make this space calming and mysterious.
Apprentices teams

We are introducing something new to Kitori Academy, teams! You will pick a banner to represent your team and add other characters to your team.
This will bring some secret perks that we will reveal in the future...

We are excited to share with you our latest additions to Kitori Academy, spells!
One of the new tools you can use to train your magical skills is the staff that you can see in the picture.
You will be able to aim with the staff, and magical things will happen!
A magical trail will be seen on the floor, walls, and objects when you aim with your staff.
This spell effect will change if you find an interactive object, and the cat rolls on the air!
The cat will also look at where you are aiming!
Friendly wizard duels

Not only you will be able to use some spells around the academy, but there will also be a dedicated area to duel against other apprentices.
Agatha, the spell caster teacher, supervises these duels, and they are completely friendly.
Other apprentices will cheer and contemplate the duel.
Duels will give you rewards, for example, points on the spell duel class. They will also benefit you to improve your relationship with the other apprentices.
