A major update for The Neon Boy is out, bringing new visuals, refined controls and online races with friends. The game has moved to a new engine, and familiar levels now feature new backgrounds, scenery and effects.
What has changed
- New visuals across all acts. Backgrounds and scenery have been reworked, along with the hero’s appearance and animations, trap effects and portals.
- Refined jumps. Jump height depends on when you release the button. If you press jump just before landing, the hero jumps on contact with the ground. You can also jump off a wall when you touch it in midair.
- Attempt replays. After completing a level in more than one attempt, you can see all your attempts play out together. Race replays show the attempts of every participant.
- Updated interface. Menus, settings, the lobby and results screens have been redesigned. You can use a controller all the way from launch to exit.
- New music and sound effects. The music and sounds for jumps, portals, buttons and menus have been replaced.
Race your friends
Choose an act and invite friends through Steam for races with 2–4 players. The first player to reach the exit wins each level. After a race, watch the replay and compare times and attempts. At the end of the act, see the overall standings based on wins.
Familiar levels and new personal bests
The game keeps its 80 main levels and 9 secret levels. Collect all 27 hidden artifacts to unlock the bonus act. Return to completed levels, try new routes and improve your times.
The original version and your saves
The original 2018 version remains available in the original-2018 branch. To play it, right-click The Neon Boy in your Steam Library, open Properties > Betas and select original-2018.
You will need to start the campaign again after the update. The save format has changed, so local progress from version 1.2.1 — completed levels, collected artifacts and best times — does not carry over.
Your unlocked Steam achievements are retained. Steam Leaderboards are shared with the original version and are not reset.
