With Radiant Wilds arriving April 13, our latest Dev Talk shifts focus to the update’s gameplay features and technical improvements. Alongside the visual overhaul, the team has prioritized performance, new systems, and long-requested changes from the community, while also improving the experience for new players.
In this video, Game Director Moritz Bokelmann and Technical Director Jon Davis walk through the key additions and improvements coming with the update.
Performance Improvements
A major focus of Radiant Wilds is improving performance, especially in demanding situations like large-scale battles. The team has worked to identify and address systems that create bottlenecks under heavy load. This includes:
- Improved task handling, with more systems running concurrently
- Background loading for environmental objects, structures, and visual effects
- Optimization of over 600 visual effects for more efficient rendering
- Updated processing for certain spell effects
These changes aim to reduce stutters, minimize frame drops, and deliver a smoother overall gameplay experience.
New UI indicators will also provide clearer visibility into network connection status. Further optimizations are already planned beyond this update, including a Unity 6 upgrade and improvements to the ingame UI system.
The Armory
Radiant Wilds introduces the Armory, a new extension to the Loadout system designed to help players find effective equipment builds for all of Albion’s features and activities. The system analyzes real gameplay data to identify builds that perform well in specific situations. Players can:
- Select an activity, such as solo play, group content, or PvP
- Browse builds that have consistently performed well in that activity
- View full loadouts, including equipment, spells, and consumables
- Compare builds using performance metrics
Because the system continuously evaluates gameplay data, it adapts over time and reflects changes in balance and player behavior. The goal is to make it easier to discover builds, experiment with setups, and understand what works best for different types of content.
Arena Changes
Two updates are coming to the Crystal Arena:
- It receives a new map, introducing fresh choke points and additional flanking paths
- Players will also be able to queue in groups of four, improving matchmaking flexibility and queue times
In addition, a new 1v1 Arena mode is being introduced.
- This offers structured one-on-one combat in a ranked format
- It has separate ratings and leaderboard from the 5v5 Arena
- Uses a best-of-three match format
- Features an overtime mechanic that shrinks the arena to force a conclusion
At launch, the 1v1 Arena will be available as a limited-time mode during the Guild Season, allowing us to gather feedback and evaluate its long-term role.
Battle Mounts
Radiant Wilds introduces changes to Battle Mount usage in large-scale fights.
- A new Battle Mount Disarray system adds a shared limit for each alliance within a region:
- Each Battle Mount contributes to this limit
- Exceeding the limit increases Disarray penalties
The goal is to encourage more deliberate use of Battle Mounts and reduce the need to bring large numbers of them into fights. This system also provides a more flexible foundation for future balance adjustments.
Other Features
Additional improvements in Radiant Wilds include:
- Party Leave Protection: players who leave or are removed from a party, guild, or alliance cannot immediately attack or be attacked by former allies
- Destiny Board improvements: a clearer and more readable presentation, especially for new players
- Loot interface updates: a larger window and a new Loot All option
Radiant Wilds brings a broad set of improvements across performance, gameplay systems, and core features, and we’re excited for you to experience them firsthand when the update goes live on April 13! Check out the official update page here.
