Stick Life: The Daily Grind came out on Steam on October 6. In the week since, the city has had more than 30 updates, often several in one day, so it's easy to have missed some. Here's everything that's new or changed since launch, in one place.
Quests
- Every quest step pays cash, from $100 for getting a job to $10,000,000 for the deed. Older saves were paid for the steps they'd already done.
- Ten new quest roads, taking the total from four to fourteen: Clocking In, Open House, Neighborly, Second Chance, The Bank, Keys, The Ring, Night Out, After Hours and The Crew.
- The Quests tab folds each road away, shows the locked ones and what opens them, and lists the reward on every step.
- The city map is now a full screen, with framed districts, the route to where you're going, and a quest panel. The minimap points at quest spots.
- The tutorial now ends with a night of smoking, drinking and gambling.
Crime
- Break-ins. Shops and offices closed for the night, and some houses, can be broken into. Pick the lock by feeling for the sweet spot before your pick snaps. Locks run from novice to master, and the new Lockpicking skill only grows by picking them. Search the place, then fence what you find at the pawnshop.
- Hotwiring. After closing time, steal a car straight off a dealer's lot. Cheap cars are easy. The halo car is rare.
- Heat and police. A heat bar sits next to your health, and the police come out when it gets high. The phone's Scanner app shows where the officers are.
- A weapon slot on your character sheet. Carry a gun and the drunks leave you alone. Carry the copper pipe and it becomes a move when somebody jumps you.
- Kody the Connoisseur's coat of bootleg goods now goes all the way up to a $10,000 replica painting. He also grills Questionable but Delicious Meat on a drum barbecue at Main and Uptown.
- Third Hand Pawn's back room: used cigarettes, a stolen TV, the Mystery Stain Mattress, a scratch ticket that's already a loser, and a stolen arcade cabinet with three crime games for a quarter (Cuprum Caper, Catalytic Crusher and ATM Smash & Dash).
Cars, bikes and boards
- Every car has been redrawn with its own body and its own engine sound, and cars now face eight ways down the road. Look out for the Golden Box Bling.
- Ten motorcycles, from a $5,000 moped to a $5,000,000 superbike, with a bike space in every garage.
- Apex Customs uptown and Certified Crankers downtown (Ferro's old shop): window tint, vinyl, body kits and neon underglow in eight colors, plus paint, wheels and neon for bikes.
- Street racing. Jack runs drag races down Main Street around the clock: ten rivals, a launch on the green and four shifts on a retro tach. Racing trains the new Driving skill.
- Skateboards, scooters and running shoes at Third Hand Pawn. Each step up costs more and goes faster.
- The phone's Ride app calls a cab to any door in the city, and the Garage app tows a car that won't start.
Homes and property
- No. 11, the Mews: a $250,000 townhouse uptown that you can buy and walk into.
- The Crack Shack: $150,000, behind the pawnshop. No rent, no power bill and no property tax, ever.
- Rental property: ten buildings that pay you 2% of their price every night, from a $100,000 Fixer Upper to the $50,000,000 Pinnacle. Buy the Slumlord Specials and your own apartment there is rent-free.
- Both realty offices now split Homes from Investment Property, with a photo on every listing.
- 39 new house items: fireplaces that cut your heating bill, instruments that train Popularity and play the Half Moon's songs, cardio machines, games room pieces and seasonal decor. Plus fifteen fish tanks.
- The Homing Rod takes you to your front door in one press.
Pets
- No more pet limit. Adopt as many as you like, and the shelter will take any of them back.
- The pet wheel: press E on an animal at home to pet it, feed it, or pick it up and carry it around.
- Dogs and cats can wear hats, sunglasses and chains. There are fourteen hats now, including a trash can lid for raccoons.
- Pet beds and bowls that your pets actually use.
- The shelter, the dogs and cats, and the Menagerie's animals are all redrawn, and the elephant finally has a paddock of its own.
- Small mishaps: the dog might eat your shoes, and the elephant might sit on your furniture. You bought an elephant. What did you expect?
People
- The city's fifty citizens are personal now. Each has their own lines, remembers you, and greets you (or scowls at you) on the street.
- Conversations go deeper the better you know someone: replies to everything you say, stories, gossip, and things they remember from last time.
- The People tab shows everyone's face. The phone's Contacts app lets you text friends and plan date nights.
- Citizens have habits: walking dogs door to door, playing fetch at the dog run, and pickup basketball and tennis. Some live on Acorn Row in the Oaks, and you can knock on their doors.
- Fresh Fades barbershop is open with seventeen cuts, Bad Decisions has new face tattoos, and the crowd wears both. Fighters keep their hair and ink in the ring.
Work and money
- Job pay is up: five times as much on the lower half of every career ladder, and ten times from halfway up.
- Overtime: after a shift, take one errand a day across town at time and a half.
- Every clothing slot has perks now. Hats, shades, chains and pants all do something.
- Full Circle: give your billion away at the statue and start a new life with your perks. Each new life pays less and costs more.
- Seven new phone apps, including LinkedOff for job applications and Stocks for the exchange.
- Every shift and class scene is redrawn inside the room where it happens.
- Easy, Normal and Hard for the bench press, game night and the Headline Set.
A city rebuilt, room by room
Almost every interior in the game has been redone, and a few places have moved or opened.
- Downtown: the Chrome Griddle, Uncle Mikes Truck Burger, HARD AND WHERE?, Third Hand Pawn, Ashtray Acres Casino (bigger and sadder), Big Ray's Bowl-O-Rama (cosmic bowling), Bad Decisions Tattoo, Bring Back Asbestos Realty, Second Chance Animal Shelter, both furniture stores, both clothes shops and even your starter tent. Fresh Fades is new.
- The Salty Soup moved to Cutter Street as a biker bar with a real bar band.
- Uptown: the four tower lobbies, BusinessCorp's five floors and the corner office, the Decanter (now a wine bar with trivia), the Gilded Spoon, Bling and Blang, Ohm Sweet Ohm, the Vanishing Point, the Menagerie, Meridian Trust, City Revenue and Civic Center Holding. Apex Motors and Skyline Realty were rebuilt as luxury storefronts, and Golden Hour General and Forklift State University have buildings of their own.
- Stadium West: the Half Moon is a nightclub, the Velvet Riff is a comedy club, Southpaw MMA is a working fight gym, and the Crucible's Gate A is home to the West End Volts.
- Foundry Flats: the Builders' Yard is a showroom and Construction Co. is a dispatch office.
- Each of the three schools has a classroom of its own.
- Eleven places got new names, like Jorts & Sorts, Big Ray's Bowl-O-Rama and Bring Back Asbestos Realty.
- Public Works: a new floor at the Civic Center where you pay to fix the city. Sidewalks, potholes, streetlights, a park, a library, a stage at the Salty Soup and a new hospital wing.
- Buildings turn see-through when you walk behind them.
Sound and music
- Real recordings for the streets, rain and thunderstorms, crowds, shops, the casino, fights, Foundry Flats, gardens and birds. Every fight move has its own sound too.
- New music at the Salty Soup, uptown by day, Foundry Flats, Big Ray's and Bad Decisions, plus six new club tracks for the Headline Set at the Half Moon.
Screens and controls
- Every door, counter and conversation opens full-screen, and nine screens were redesigned, including the character sheet, People, Quests, your pockets, achievements and the shops.
- A new title screen with the real downtown behind the menu.
- The day, the time and your money show on every menu.
- Instructions are rewritten in plain words, naming the tab, the key or the place.
- In shops, click a card to pick it, then Buy, or Shift+Buy to get ten.
- Wide and ultrawide monitors are filled edge to edge.
Performance and stability
- Rooms draw much faster, and so does Stadium West.
- The game recovers from graphics crashes instead of closing, and keeps a log you can send me if something goes wrong.
- Controllers work on the new screens too: the lockpick, the hotwire, the stolen arcade cabinet and Travel on the city map.
- Seven new Steam achievements, for 60 in all, and dozens of new ones in the game.
Free demo coming soon
A free demo is on the way. You'll get your first full day in the city for free, and if you buy the game afterwards, your demo save comes with you.
Thank you
To everyone who's played since launch: thank you. You've watched this world grow up around you, sometimes a few times in one day. I always love to hear from you, whether it's what you love, what's broken or what you want next. Leave a note in the Discussions tab or write a review, and I'll read it.
