This is a milestone for me in my lifelong pursuit of game creation.
I was reflecting the other day on how far back my love for making games goes. I used to make adventure game levels out of Legos with my friend Nicky, putting studs on top of minifigs to represent health and we laid out entire levels to explore. In high school I got a hold of GameMaker and began designing little game adaptations of a derpy superhero comic series I wrote about my classmates. And then for the past ten years, I’ve been starting and stopping video game projects ad nauseum.
I know that anyone can pay $100 and slap whatever they want onto the Steam store, but I am really proud of myself today. I’ve been saying that I would make a video game for so long that I began to seriously doubt myself.
But this process has reminded me that I love this process and that I can reach my goals if I set realistic standards and pace myself. I started with the aim to have a technically functional game where you could have a high score, get points, and lose the game. From there I continued building, which I want to do in the future with any future projects.
This season of my life has been marked with some difficult adjustments and things I’ve had to surrender. But I saw my creative side come alive with this game, almost in concert with my pain, like seedlings sprouting from the snow.
