Fixed worlds with short years are classed as deserts. Rain was counted per month of the planet’s own year, so a planet that circles its star in a few weeks never reached the thresholds for a wet climate, no matter how much it rained. Rain is now measured per Earth month in the climate zones, the Precipitation layer and the yearly total. Earth is unchanged; worlds close to red and orange dwarfs can now be jungles.
Polish language. Choose Polski in Settings.
The Topography Creator’s Terrain Base now separates importing a heightmap from creating a terrain. An imported file is shown first, with its size and any problems, before it replaces anything, and image files can be dropped onto the window.
Imported 16-bit heightmaps keep their fine height detail instead of being reduced to 256 levels.
New Global Topography Edits in the Topography Creator: sea level and a height curve that reshapes every height on the planet at once, previewed on the globe before you apply it.
Guide Overlays now explain what they are for, and the Data Bank’s Topography Creator article covers the new layout.
Perihelion Longitude sets the season in which a planet passes closest to its star. Set Earth’s near the northern summer solstice, as about 10,000 years ago, and the African monsoon reaches deep into the Sahara.
Axial Tilt now runs to 180 degrees. Past 90 the planet spins backwards, as Venus does: its trade winds and ocean gyres turn the other way and its sun rises in the west.
A Spin choice replaces the tidal lock box: Free spin, Tidally locked, or the 3:2 resonance Mercury is held in, with its two hot poles.
Star Overhead At picks which longitude faces the star on a tidally locked world. On an elliptical orbit the star now swings a little east and west of that point through the year.
While the climate settles, the top bar shows about how long is left, worked out from the recent pace on your own computer.
Through the orbit: a slider under the key of Temperature, Precipitation and Pressure steps through the year in 30-degree stops of the orbit, so you can watch the seasons move. Export’s All Phases saves the whole set at once.
Contours: a switch in the key shows Temperature, Precipitation and Pressure as bands of colour with a line where they meet, like a weather map. Exports follow it.
The Precipitation layer has two new views: Relative Humidity and Dew Point, yearly averages of the air near the ground, with the most humid and driest times of the orbit in the readout.
Export has new Map Options: Temperature and Precipitation can show their values over the sea as well as on land, and coastlines can be drawn over the map or saved on their own, white on black, to lay over other maps.
Sea Surface Circulation is now called Ocean Circulation.
Pressure’s four orbital-phase maps are now part of the orbit slider, with a stop every 30 degrees.
The Mars presets now pass closest to the Sun in late southern spring, as Mars does.
Fixed the Companion Moons window showing its readouts in English whatever the language.
Fixed an error when choosing some entries in the Topography Creator’s brush shape list.
Fixed climate maps, keys and exports stopping at 60 C on hot worlds and at minus 70 C on cold ones, and monthly rain stopping at 500 mm.
Fixed tides becoming unstable on fast-spinning worlds where shallow seas meet deep ocean.
Fixed the Temperature layer’s Live view and the hover’s current temperature on very hot and very cold worlds. Venus now reads about 160 to 175 C rather than about 75 C.
The Temperature layer’s Live view now stands on the planet’s own terrain: mountains and high plateaus are cold where they rise, and the view is smooth instead of blocky.
Fixed the top bar pushing Reset and Pause off the screen on narrower displays in German, Spanish, French and Russian.
Fixed the Export panel’s buttons and menus not responding in Sphere View when the panel sat over the globe, which also kept the image size stuck at 2048 x 1024.
Fixed very large heightmaps freezing the Topography Creator’s import. Maps wider than 8192 pixels are now reduced as they load.
Fixed the Topography key in framed exports stretching into a tall column when climate names were shown.
Fixed the top bar’s Total Energy Flux and Insolation disagreeing with the Stellar Parameters panel around stars unlike the Sun.
Fixed the orbit strip in the planet’s interior view losing the habitable zone around cool red dwarfs and brown dwarfs.
After a change to the star, orbit, spin or planet, the old world’s climate now leaves the map until the new one appears, and the year counter starts again from zero.
Fixed changes to the star, orbit or planet during a climate settle being ignored until Reset.
