GRID MASTER REBUILT - Mods, Demo & Combat Update
Hey Snakes!
This update brings a major rebuild of the late-game Grid Master encounter, makes modded runs dramatically safer to continue after Workshop changes, improves the demo ending, and adds a large pass of combat feedback, leaderboard, save, UI, and performance improvements.
GRID MASTER - FULL ENCOUNTER REWORK
The Grid Master encounter has been substantially rebuilt.
New animated boss
The Grid Master now appears as an animated armored mask matching the character seen during transmissions.
New idle, charge and hit animations.
Improved visibility during teleports and attacks.
Cleaner shield markers around the boss.
Updated Codex artwork and descriptions.
Reduced Motion remains supported.
Three distinct combat phases
The Grid Master now changes both its attacks and movement as the fight progresses.
Phase I
Moves in 1-cell steps.
Uses consecutive cutting attacks.
Continues moving during attack sequences.
Phase II
Begins flanking by 1-2 cells.
Can create dangerous echoes based on the Snake's recent path.
Uses temporary cell locks.
Can summon up to 2 Hunters.
Phase III
Blinks 3-6 cells at a time.
Uses large multi-lane sweep attacks with escape gaps.
Stops summoning additional Hunters and focuses on direct pressure.
Movement also becomes faster between phases:
Phase I movement attempts: every 2.2 seconds.
Phase II: every 1.6 seconds.
Phase III blinks: every 1.2 seconds.
Attack warnings remain deliberately readable:
At least 3 seconds in Phases I-II.
At least 2.4 seconds in Phase III.
1.5 seconds of recovery after attack sequences.
Attacks that would leave no valid escape route are skipped.
More readable Grid Master abilities
Several attacks now happen visibly instead of changing the board instantly.
Enemy summons are projected from the Grid Master's portrait as holograms before landing on the board.
Food corruption now travels from the portrait toward its target. Food becomes poisoned only when the effect reaches it.
Cell locks receive a 0.9-second warning. The targeted cell remains passable until the lock actually activates.
A lock is cancelled if the target becomes occupied before activation.
The Grid Master also reacts visually to several events, including your first power-up and your first long flawless stretch of play.
THE DEMO NOW REVEALS THE THIRD BIOME
Finishing Level 7 no longer immediately ends the demo.
You can now enter Level 8 and see the beginning of the third, lava-themed biome before the demo completion screen appears.
The preview survives saving and reloading.
The completion summary once again shows the full reward information.
Large unlock lists can be scrolled.
Saved-progress information is now shown more prominently on the completion screen.
Demo messaging has been corrected so features already available in the demo are no longer advertised as full-game-only features.
SECRET ROOMS - A BETTER FIRST DISCOVERY
Secret Room entrances now have a proper reveal sequence.
New breach-forming animation with movement, debris, dust and a nearby glint.
The reveal happens after the board becomes visible instead of during loading.
The first Secret Room entrance on a profile receives an additional coin placed near the breach to subtly encourage investigation.
Later Secret Room reveals are intentionally quieter.
Reduced Motion uses a shorter, simplified reveal.
LEECH ATTACKS ARE MUCH EASIER TO READ
Resource theft now has direct HUD feedback.
When a Leech steals from you:
The actual coin or score icon travels from the HUD toward the Leech.
Rapid thefts are combined into readable loss indicators.
Health damage and resource theft are displayed separately.
Leech descriptions have also been corrected and simplified.
The rules are now stated clearly:
Leeches steal coins first.
If you have no coins, they steal score instead.
Resource theft can still happen while you are otherwise invincible.
Their movement and pursuit behavior is explained more accurately.
SWAPSMITH FEEDBACK & CHASING
Swapsmith board rewrites are now much easier to follow.
Instead of hiding the affected area:
The original object remains visible as the rewrite begins.
A directed pulse connects the Swapsmith to each affected target.
The replacement appears immediately.
Fragments of the previous object show what was changed.
We also fixed a chase bug that could cause Swapsmiths, Echo Wraiths and some Leeches to stop pursuing correctly after contact or direction changes.
WARDEN WALL IMPROVEMENTS
Warden wall attacks now communicate their timing more clearly.
The Warden visibly performs the cast.
Planned wall cells remain visibly passable before activation.
Each wall becomes solid only when it actually activates.
Walls receive a visible warning shortly before expiring.
A gap opens as soon as collision ends instead of visually lingering.
Replaced walls now keep correct ownership, preventing an older timer from removing a newer barrier.
Warden wall charge and impact sounds have also been removed to reduce unnecessary audio clutter.
COMBAT FIXES & READABILITY
A number of enemy interactions have been tightened up.
Frozen non-boss enemies can once again be safely devoured on contact with Frost Tail or Freeze Time active.
Frozen Hunters no longer leave a stuck sprite behind after being devoured.
Bosses continue to use their normal HP-based damage rules while frozen.
Fixed a Crawler interaction that could charge the player for the same frontal collision twice.
Ice Shards now physically reach the Snake before resolving contact, preventing remote-looking hits and sprite snapping.
Enemy descriptions across all supported languages have been shortened and corrected where they previously implied inaccurate rules.
Boss descriptions avoid unnecessarily revealing encounter surprises.
FORTUNE RIFT FEEDBACK
Fortune Rift evolution thresholds now receive a proper visual response.
Crossing a threshold sends an energy impulse from the counter toward the portal.
The portal transformation follows when the impulse arrives.
Rare reward feedback happens afterward instead of overlapping the transformation.
Patch's eyes react when his portrait is already on screen.
Loading a save does not replay old threshold effects.
MODDED RUNS ARE NOW MUCH SAFER
This update contains a major overhaul of how active runs interact with Steam Workshop mods.
Runs remember their exact mod environment
When a run begins, the game freezes the important parts of its mod setup:
Enabled mods.
Versions.
Load order.
Workshop identity.
Resource-pack configuration.
A Workshop refresh can therefore no longer silently change what an existing run expects.
Dependencies now load in the correct order
Required mods always load before the mods that depend on them.
The Mods screen also prevents manual reorder operations that would create an invalid dependency order.
SYNC & CONTINUE
If your current mod setup no longer matches a saved run, Continue can now offer a Sync & Continue workflow instead of simply refusing to load it.
Depending on the situation, the game can:
Restore the saved enabled-mod set.
Restore the required load order.
Subscribe to or download required Workshop content.
Disable additional mods for the run without unsubscribing from them.
Show download progress.
Recheck compatibility before loading the save.
If synchronization fails, the previous configuration is restored and the active run is kept.
Unsafe situations - such as an unavailable required mod, incompatible source, invalid mod, missing DLC or an impossible resource-pack configuration - remain blocked rather than using a risky "Continue Anyway" option.
EXACT WORKSHOP BUILDS ARE CACHED FOR ACTIVE RUNS
Steam Workshop folders can change automatically when an author publishes an update.
To protect saved runs from this, the game now keeps a local cached copy of the exact Workshop build used when the run started.
This allows an active run to continue using the version it was actually created with rather than silently switching to a newer Workshop version.
Cached builds can also be restored when the live Workshop folder is temporarily unavailable.
New runs still use the latest installed Workshop version.
Builds required by active runs are protected from automatic cache cleanup.
The Mods screen displays cache information and allows unused versions to be cleared.
MOD STARTUP RECOVERY
Bad or incompatible mods should no longer be able to trap the game in a repeated startup crash.
The game now detects when the previous launch stopped while mods were being initialized.
On the next launch it can enter a safe recovery mode before discovering or mounting the problematic mods.
The recovery screen can offer:
Restore Last Working Setup - restore the exact previously working Workshop builds where possible.
Start Without Mods - disable mods without deleting your active run.
Try Current Setup Again - retry the current configuration.
The Last Working Setup also checks local mod files. If a local mod changed since the successful startup, the game will not silently pretend that it is the same build.
If recovery reaches a state where some resource packs have already been mounted and the session can no longer be safely repaired, the game requires a clean restart before another recovery attempt.
COPY MOD DIAGNOSTICS
The Mods screen now includes Copy Diagnostics.
It creates a support report containing information such as:
Enabled and active mods.
Load order.
Invalid or inactive mods.
Conflicts and dependency problems.
Resource-pack state.
Categorized errors and warnings.
The report is sanitized before being copied and does not include your local user folder or absolute filesystem paths, making it much safer to paste into Discord, Steam Discussions or a bug report.
LEADERBOARD RELIABILITY
Steam and local leaderboard handling received several reliability improvements.
Steam leaderboard operations now recover more cleanly from timeouts.
Verified score reports have a more robust retry queue.
Long runs no longer lose most of their score-upload retry window simply because the run itself lasted a long time.
Expired queued reports are cleaned up correctly.
Corrupted receipt data is rejected during recovery instead of being carried forward.
Local leaderboard history is kept bounded while preserving the records needed by every available filter.
Your latest local run remains visible even when it falls outside the normal displayed result slice.
When enough historical data is available, the pinned latest run keeps its real rank instead of receiving an artificial position.
Gridbreak bests are read from the appropriate leaderboard history.
Epic Games leaderboard uploads and downloads are currently unavailable while the Epic implementation is being completed.
SAVE SAFETY
Additional protections have been added around active-run and profile saves.
Malformed or corrupted active-run snapshot structures are rejected before they can partially modify the current game state.
Newly written saves are validated before the previous known-good backup is removed.
If final validation fails, the game attempts to restore the previous valid save.
Recovery has additional fallback handling for filesystem rename failures.
Existing backups are preserved more carefully when recovery itself is interrupted.
PERFORMANCE
The board and several frequently executed gameplay paths received another optimization pass.
In internal Godot 4.7.1 benchmarks on a 30x30 board:
Reading all 900 grid cells dropped from approximately 334 µs to 185 µs.
Board setup dropped from approximately 37 µs to 7 µs.
400 Snake movement operations dropped from approximately 1250 µs to 1085 µs.
Several collision, enemy movement, food and Snake-pose operations were also reduced.
These changes preserve the existing save format and gameplay behavior.
UI & ACCESSIBILITY
Desktop loading-screen text is approximately 27% larger and easier to read.
Compact and portrait layouts retain their existing sizing.
The main-menu Discord link has been redesigned as an animated community ribbon.
New Grid Master, Secret Room, Leech, Swapsmith and Fortune Rift effects include Reduced Motion behavior.
New and updated gameplay text has been localized across all 18 supported languages.
THANK YOU
This was a large update touching combat, mods, saved runs, the demo, leaderboards and several existing enemies.
As always, if something behaves strangely after the update - especially with Workshop mods - let me know. The new Copy Diagnostics option should make those reports much easier to investigate.
Thanks for playing Snake: Gridbreaker!
