This week has been all about making sure that my tech base is working as intended. I've created a batch of content to test everything out, and I'm happy to report that it's all working as planned. While creating all this new content, I also ended up making some technical improvements to the game. They turned out so well that I wanted to showcase a couple of them here.
One of the biggest things I completed this week is actually rather small, but it had a huge impact on the flow of the game.
The dialogue system felt a bit stale, so I decided to juice it up by adding some subtle camera movement. Now the camera moves towards the person who's talking.
I'm honestly surprised by how big of an impact this small change had on the vibe of the game. The dialogue sequences now feel much more like actual conversations.
The second thing I want to showcase is actually a major feature that has been missing until now.
At its heart, *The Polar Darkness* is also a detective game. You are a journalist trying to figure out what's going on, so you need the proper tools to do some actual investigating.
This is the new keyword system. Anything interesting you uncover can be saved as a keyword. You can then use these keywords almost like inventory items to extract new information from people.
The system adds a really nice layer on top of the traditional adventure game mechanics and gives the investigation side of the game a whole new level of depth. I've already integrated it into the puzzle logic, so you can start brushing up on your research skills while waiting for the release of the game.
