Mayday Is Going Multilingual!
I’m excited to announce that localization support is officially in development for Mayday!
Until now, Mayday has only been available in English. After seeing players from different parts of the world discover the game, I wanted to make it more accessible to people who may prefer to play in their own language.
The game is currently being updated to support the following languages:
English
日本語 — Japanese
简体中文 — Simplified Chinese
繁體中文 — Traditional Chinese
한국어—Korean
Русский — Russian
Português (Brasil) — Brazilian Portuguese
Deutsch—German
Français—French
This won’t just apply to the main menu. I’m working toward localizing gameplay menus, HUD elements, upgrade descriptions, tutorials, mission information, results screens, and story dialogue as well.
Because Mayday was originally built entirely around English text, this also means updating parts of the game behind the scenes to support different alphabets and writing systems properly. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Cyrillic, accented characters, and other text must display correctly throughout the game.
The localization system itself is already up and running, and seeing Mayday’s menus appear in languages like 日本語, 简体中文, 한국어, Русский, Português, Deutsch, and Français for the first time has been incredibly exciting.
As a solo developer, this is a fairly large undertaking, so localization will continue to be tested and refined before the update is considered complete. I want to make sure the translations are understandable, consistent, and fit properly within the game rather than simply dropping machine-translated text into every screen.
Thank you to everyone who has downloaded, played, or simply checked out Mayday. Seeing the game reach players outside of the audience I originally expected is a big part of why I decided to take this step.
Mayday is getting a little bigger — one language at a time.
More updates soon!
