v0.54.0 - The Soul Update
Biggest update since launch. 55+ bug fixes, full balance pass, and new systems that bring the world to life.
The Soul Update
Vex's Disease Actually Works Now
Vex is supposed to be dying. That's his whole thing. Turns out the disease was never wired up and he could live forever. Fixed. After about 30 in-game days, the disease catches up with him. His bucket list quest actually matters now. Aldric's moral crisis (where he turns on you if you go too dark) also fires correctly.
All 15 Awakening Moments Count
We were tracking 15 different spiritual milestones but only counting 7 of them toward your awakening level. Forgiving a betrayer, accepting grief, sacrificing for another. All of it counts now. There are way more paths to the True Ending than before.
Moments of Silence
The screen goes blank for a few seconds after the heaviest moments in the game. After a companion dies. After you bring down an Old God. After the final endings. Just a pause. Let it land.
Your Companions Talk Now
68 lines across all 5 companions that trigger while you explore the dungeon. Aldric watches your back. Vex eyes the loot. Lyris reads the air. Mira worries about your wounds. Melodia hums. About 15% chance per room, and they don't repeat.
You Can Overhear NPCs
Walk into the Inn or Main Street and sometimes you'll catch two NPCs mid-conversation. Gossip about what happened on floor 30. An argument about the king. A quiet prayer at the Temple. Real names from the actual NPCs in the room.
The World Looks Different Now
Blood Moon makes everything red. You can feel the rumble when a world boss is active. Guards get nervous after a coup. The mood goes quiet when someone dies. Morning light, evening shadows. Small stuff, but you notice it.
Inn Overhaul
X-bit the Bartender
The Inn has a bartender now. His name is X-bit. Old adventurer, seen too much, runs the bar. You can buy drinks, ask him for rumors (he knows what's going on in the dungeon, he'll comment on your companions, ask about your spouse), or ask him about any NPC in town. He'll tell you what he knows.
Real Food Menu
The old "Order Food" was broken (permanent stat boost for 10 gold, infinite times). Replaced it with 6 actual dishes:
- Hearty Stew: heals 10% HP
- Grilled Dragon Steak: +10% damage, 5 fights
- Elven Honey Bread: +10% defense, 5 fights
- Dwarven Iron Rations: +15% max HP, 5 fights
- Mystic Mushroom Soup: +15% spell damage, 5 fights
- Seth's Mystery Meat: could be any of the above, could be food poisoning
Prices go up with your level. Three meals a day.
Inn Fixes
The Skull and Bones card game was erasing your hand after every draw. Seth Able's lifetime defeat counter was resetting every time you logged out. NPC duels were sharing a daily limit with Seth fights. All fixed.
Moddable Game Data
You can now edit the game's data without touching the source code. Run --export-data and the game dumps 6 JSON files you can modify:
- npcs.json: the 60 town NPCs
- monster_families.json: all 16 monster families
- dreams.json: every dream and vision
- achievements.json: all achievements
- dialogue.json: NPC conversation lines
- balance.json: combat tuning, crit rates, boss settings
Drop your edited files in a GameData/ folder next to the exe. The game picks them up on startup. If you mess up the JSON, it just uses defaults. No crashes.
Balance Pass
Combat
- Monsters past floor 50 got a lot weaker. They were scaling way faster than players and one-shotting people at high floors. About 40% reduction at floor 100.
- Artifact weapons get their full power now. The old soft cap was cutting them off too early.
- Potions cost more at higher levels (55g at level 1, 550g at level 100). They were basically free before.
- The trap resistance buff from the Settlement prison actually works on dungeon traps now. It was only checking puzzles and riddles.
Economy
- New weapon reforging at the Weapon Shop. Pay gold to reroll your weapon's stats, small chance of a rarity upgrade. Gives you something to spend gold on in the endgame.
- The Inn food buffs give you a reason to eat before heading into the dungeon.
Online XP Pacing
- After earning 50,000 XP in one session, gains start tapering off. Bottoms out at 25%. Encourages you to take a break and come back tomorrow. Resets when you log in.
Class Tuning
- Barbarian: less raw STR (+3 instead of +4), more stamina for ability use
- Sage: less mana per level (14 instead of 18). Still the biggest mana pool, just not absurd.
- Mystic Shaman: weaker melee stats. You need to use your totems and enchants now, you can't just play it like a Warrior with bonus spells.
- Shop items stop pretending to be "Artifact" rarity. They're Common or Uncommon, and that's fine.
Equipment Fixes (11)
- "Equip Best" at the Inn doesn't eat your items anymore
- Gear you put on NPC teammates in the dungeon actually sticks now
- Equipment restrictions (class locks, armor weight, alignment) survive save/load
- World boss special effects (BossSlayer, TitanResolve) don't vanish when you equip the item
- Waist and Face slots show up in the Team Corner and Home equipment screens
- Failed equip attempts don't destroy the item anymore
- If you have two items with the same name but different enchants, it picks the right one
- Equipment saves are properly awaited instead of fire-and-forget
NPC Fixes (10)
- NPCs dying temporarily (and respawning 10 minutes later) no longer permanently wipe their marriages
- NPCs can't get stuck permanently dead because of a name mismatch in the respawn system
- Short-lived races (Gnolls, Orcs, Trolls) get replaced faster when they die of old age
- Old saves no longer randomly assign NPCs an age right before their natural death
- Nine NPC data fields that were getting wiped every 5 minutes in online mode are now saved properly
- Your own team members and spouse can't get picked as random street enemies anymore
- The fake "permanently killed" news message is gone (they always come back)
Gameplay Fixes (17)
- Aldric can actually sacrifice himself to save you now. The check was looking for an ability that didn't exist.
- The secret ending (Dissolution) is reachable. Memory fragment progress was resetting every logout.
- Beating the final boss is required for the ending. Dying to him was triggering it too.
- /tell and /group work with character names now, not just login usernames
- Dead characters don't show up in the arena anymore
- Blood Moon works properly in multiplayer
- Prestige classes and Mystic Shaman get training points now
- Changing your color theme takes effect immediately
- Kids actually generate daily gold income like they're supposed to
- Random number generation is thread-safe in Wilderness and Settlement
- Gambling bets are capped by level now
- PvP gold penalty math is in the right order
For Modders
- Run UsurperReborn --export-data to dump all the default JSON files
- Edit whatever you want, delete the ones you don't care about
- Restart the game
For BBS Sysops
The auto-update scripts (updatecheck.sh and updatecheck.ps1) ship with the release now. Set up a cron job or scheduled task and your server stays current on its own.
