I always wanted to make a video game but didn’t think I could. I set out at the beginning of 2024 to make my first game. I chose Godot because I wanted an open-source program. I wanted to make a hidden-object game. After about six months of drawing vector assets, I realized this would take forever, and I didn’t know how to code it. I decided to make another game, this time a puzzle game. After struggling with how the art would look and whether the game should have a story, I realized I wasn’t feeling the project. At this point, I had wasted a year. I started thinking about simple games I really enjoyed. Mini Motorways was at the top of my list. I also liked Train Valley. I decided to combine the two games with my own spin, and Toxic Trains was born.
It took about a year to go from concept to completed demo. The process was fun since I like variety and working solo. The game turned out pretty much exactly as I envisioned. The only thing I’m not in love with is how the trains look. But after doing almost a dozen mocks, I realized it wasn’t that important. The only issue is I can’t tell if the game is fun to play. It’s super weird playing your own game. The game is a part of Steam Next Fest, but I don’t know if the demo will be approved before it ends. The game will release in early access as I continue to add Steam Features, level maps, and game modes. I appreciate any and all feedback.
The game should be out in mid July.
