As you prepare to lace up your boots and grab your ice axes for the Early Access Launch of Ascenders: Beyond the Peak, you might be wondering which dangers and challenges are waiting for you up on those treacherous slopes.
Surviving the elements is one thing, but the mountain is far from empty. From mutated wildlife to a dangerous secret society, and unpredictable weather hazards, here is a breakdown of the threats waiting to end your expedition.
Weather Events: Wildlife & Environmental Hazards
Every environment in Ascenders features its own unique ecosystem of aggressive creatures and localized weather events. To make matters worse, these beasts carry dangerous elemental buffs, like venomous strikes, burning attacks, or aerial mobility, that will force your team to adapt on the fly.
The Universal Hazards
No matter where you climb, the mountain itself is constantly trying to break you. Across all biomes, your team must be prepared to survive sudden natural disasters and extreme atmospheric phenomena, including:
Geological Hazards: Falling Rocks, Earthquakes, and Landslides.
Atmospheric Disruptions: Bursts of Wind, Squalls, and Sudden Eclipses.
Vision Threats: Intense Fog and Haunted Fog.
🧊 The Ice Biome
High-altitude terrors await you in the freezing cold.
Local Wildlife:
Condors, a massive flying beast that crosses the level and inflicts injuries on climbers.
Insects, relatively simple enemy, 1 stamina point with a basic attack
Rats, another trivial enemy with a hit & run strategy
and frost-resistant Spiders, which can create spider web on attack
Local Hazards:
Icy Patch
Frozen Ledge will apply the Cold debuff if you rest on a ledge covered with it - (Movement reduction)
Cold Mushroom, apply the Cold debuff when something enters their range
Ice Block apply the Cold debuff, but can be seen through and shatter in one hit (No fall damage)
Ice Stalactite will fall when hit or shaken, applying a Bleeding debuff
Unstable Rock will explode and shake nearby elements when struck.
Exclusive Weather Event: Blizzards arrive after a few turns, they will increase stamina loss by one and prevent stamina recovery on ledges.
Dangers from other biomes haven’t been uncovered yet, we’re hopeful the current expedition will return with valuable information we will share with you at a future date...
Threat Profile: Who are the Cultists?
While the wildlife and weather are deadly, your true rivals on the mountain are The Cultists. You will encounter these zealots across all biomes, acting as a constant, coordinated threat to your journey. But who are they, and why are they trying to kill you?
The Cultists are members of an ancient secret society. Driven by greed and ambition, the cult spread across the globe over the centuries, quietly infiltrating and corrupting other religions to place its members in high positions of power.
For generations, the cult scoured the earth in search of powerful artefacts. They tried to climb mountains for centuries, but were always turned back by brutal weather and primitive gear.
That all changed with the early 20th-century boom of modern mountaineering. Now, with the proper equipment finally available, the cult’s actions have become loud, reckless, and desperate. They have waited hundreds of years for this exact moment, and they are throwing everything they have into reaching the summit.
We do not know what their utter motives are, but their increased activity raises a challenge that should not be ignored.
