The node-based climb map was not the experience we wanted for Escape Ruin. We know we went quiet for a while, but we needed to take a step back, reconsider the direction of the game, and dedicate our time to building this new vision.
This update represents a major reworking of Escape Ruin, from its world and exploration to its combat, progression, encounters, and rewards.
A NEW OPEN WORLD
- Replaced the node-based climb map with a new open-world map.
- Players can freely travel across the world and choose which Lairs they wish to visit.
- Lairs are now large, interconnected areas containing numerous rooms to explore rather than fixed sequences of five combats.
- Introduced a room-hardness system to better control the difficulty of individual rooms.
- Added roaming enemies and patrol tracking throughout Lairs.
- Added step-ladder passive buffs that develop as players progress through an area.
- Some rooms now contain unique Events that can grant powerful boons—or dangerous banes.
GODS AND HEAD RELICS
- Gods can now appear during a run and offer the player their blessing.
- Refusing a god’s offer may result in a curse.
- Introduced the new God and Head Relic economy.
- Players can equip up to five Head Relics.
- Enemy Heads are granted freely when earned and follow a fixed offer schedule.
- Added more than 15 new Head Relics.
- Added several new relics and reworked existing ones to better support the game’s builds and progression.
QUESTS AND DYNAMIC CHOICES
- Quests can now retain their progress between runs.
- Added a new progression-gate quest-injection system, replacing the previous Hub-based quest logic.
- Added Choice Echoes, allowing quests to remember the decisions players made during previous branches.
- Added dramatic events that can trigger in the middle of combat.
- Choices made during quests and events can now influence later moments within a run.
PRE-COMBAT APPROACHES
- Added the new Sneak and Greet system.
- Players can attempt to sneak past enemies before combat or approach them directly.
- Sneaking is influenced by the player’s Stealth.
- Greeting enemies can produce different outcomes based on the player’s Reputation.
- These approaches introduce new ways to navigate encounters without immediately entering combat.
ENCOUNTER AND DIFFICULTY OVERHAUL
- Reworked approximately 58 encounters across the Castle.
- Revised enemy stats and abilities to bring them in line with the intended difficulty.
- Reconciled the Castle’s encounter design to create a more consistent difficulty curve.
- Built a dedicated burst-safety simulator to identify encounters capable of dealing unreasonable amounts of damage.
- Reworked encounter pacing to create a better balance between danger, recovery, and meaningful decision-making.
CARDS AND COMBAT
- Added card rarity tiers ranging from Common to Legendary.
- Card names and effects are now color-coded according to rarity.
- Revised the Castellan’s cards to better suit the character’s intended playstyle.
- Added an action queue to improve the flow and readability of attacks.
- Added hitstop to make successful attacks feel more impactful.
- Added a Combat Speed setting.
- Improved the way status effects are communicated during combat.
- Added and improved card animations.
- Made numerous improvements to the overall feel and responsiveness of combat.
REWARDS AND RUN ECONOMY
- Reworked reward scaling so higher-tier challenges provide more appropriate rewards.
- Added a Soul reward multiplier.
- Added Early Bounty Merit.
- Adjusted reward faucets throughout the game.
- Fixed several reward exploits and unintended sources of excessive resources.
PERMANENT PROGRESSION
- The Witch now offers multiple permanent buffs that enhance future runs.
- Each Witch upgrade only needs to be purchased once.
- Purchased Witch upgrades remain active permanently.
THANK YOU TO OUR PLAYTESTERS
We would like to sincerely thank everyone who participated in the Escape Ruin playtest.
Your feedback, bug reports, and time spent exploring the game have been invaluable in helping us shape this new direction.
With this major development phase complete, we will be closing the playtest for the time being. This is only a temporary closure while we work on new content and prepare the next version for testing.
We look forward to welcoming you back when there is more of Escape Ruin ready to explore.
Thank you for being part of the journey!
