The dream has changed.
For the past few weeks, I’ve been tearing into Obscura: A Sleep Worth Dying For piece by piece.
Some systems had been with the game almost since the beginning. Others worked — but simply didn’t feel as good as they should.
So instead of putting another coat of paint on them…
I rebuilt them.
And after many very late nights, a ridiculous amount of testing, tweaking, breaking things and fixing them again, the new Playtest update is finally here.
Combat now hits harder.
The Sai system has been heavily expanded and polished, with distinct elemental identities, stronger visual feedback and a new Precision Targeting system that lets you deliberately hunt down targets instead of simply throwing and hoping for the best.
Ice. Fire. Poison. Electricity. Irony.
They’re no longer just different colours attached to the same weapon.
They have jobs.
And enemies are going to notice.
And yes… you can ride the spider.
Meet Noctilo.
Traversal has gained another wonderfully strange layer, allowing you to use your eight-legged companion to move through parts of the world in ways Obscura simply cannot on her own.
Walls suddenly become paths.
Because apparently normal horses weren’t gothic enough.
Movement and combat now belong together.
Jumping, attacking, aiming, dashing and repositioning have received a lot of attention.
The goal wasn’t simply to add more mechanics.
It was to make the existing ones flow into each other.
Faster reactions. Cleaner transitions. Better feedback. Less fighting against the controls — and more fighting against whatever is waiting in the dark.
But Obscura is still about the nightmare.
Fog. Light. Ruins. Silence.
A strange street disappearing into darkness.
Something watching from just outside the light.
Alongside the gameplay changes, a huge amount of smaller visual, audio and atmospheric polish has gone into making the world feel more alive — or perhaps a little less alive.
What else changed?
The update also includes improvements and additions across:
Sai combat and elemental effects
Precision targeting
movement and game feel
enemy interactions
equipment and abilities
traversal
visual effects and animations
sound feedback
environmental polish
loading and general performance
numerous fixes and smaller quality-of-life improvements
And quite a few things that are probably more fun to discover than to list here.
The new Playtest is live now.
If you played Obscura before, this is a very different version of the nightmare you remember.
And if you’ve never played it…
this is the best time yet to fall asleep.
