The Nightmare Stirs Again

Things have been a little quiet around Obscura: A Sleep Worth Dying For for a while.

Over the past few weeks, however, I've returned to the nightmare with my full attention – and instead of simply adding more rooms and enemies, I decided to focus first on something that affects the entire game:

How Obscura feels to play.

Movement, collisions, traversal, and many of the small ways the world reacts to the player have been reworked. Much of this work happens beneath the surface, but these systems ultimately determine whether a jump feels right, a wall behaves reliably, or the world responds naturally to what the player is doing.

Building a Stronger Foundation

A major focus of the past few weeks has been physics and movement.

Collisions have been made more robust, numerous edge cases have been addressed, and parts of the technical foundation have been restructured. In a platformer, even small inconsistencies can quickly become frustrating, so I want these systems to be as stable and predictable as possible before Obscura continues to grow.

It may sound less exciting than revealing a new boss.

But it improves practically every second of the game.

Eight Legs. A Lot of New Possibilities.

At the same time, one of Obscura's most unusual traversal mechanics is taking shape:

the spider mount.

It changes the way certain areas can be explored. Walls suddenly become paths, vertical spaces gain entirely new possibilities, and places that would normally be unreachable can be approached in a completely different way.

Over the past weeks, I've continued refining wall climbing, transitions between floors and walls, animations, and how the spider behaves across different surfaces.

And yes – apparently even a spider simply hanging from a wall needs a proper idle animation.

The World Reacts

The environment itself is also becoming more alive.

Breakable stone and wooden platforms now provide much clearer feedback before they give way. Dust, splinters, movement, and small animations are designed to tell the player intuitively:

Something is happening here.

Plants and other environmental elements react more noticeably to the player's movement, while several smaller but important issues involving mounts and interactions have also been improved.

The goal isn't to cover everything in effects.

The goal is to make the world feel less static and more like a real place inside this strange dream.

Small Details Change the Whole Experience

Some of these improvements may sound small on their own.

A plant moves.

A wooden platform begins to crack.

A spider follows a wall correctly.

A mount appears somewhere it actually has enough room to exist.

But all of these details add up.

And Obscura has now reached a point where it already feels noticeably better to play than it did only a few weeks ago.

What's Next?

Technical polish will continue, but the focus is also shifting back toward levels, enemies, traversal, and the next playable areas.

The Playtest remains an important place for testing new systems and changes under real gameplay conditions before they eventually make their way into a future public version.

In the upcoming development updates, I don't just want to tell you what's changing.

I want to increasingly show you.

The dream is far from over.

Thank you to everyone following Obscura, testing it, or already keeping it on their wishlist.

See you in the nightmare.
