The Little Details That Bring Our Characters To Life

We've been working on something pretty simple lately: teaching our characters how to look at people. 🙃
Because apparently, having a bunch of people in an office who completely ignore you isn't very convincing.
So, we've added head and eye tracking to our characters.
Get close enough to someone and they'll notice you. If they're sitting at their desk working, they'll look up, turn their head, and focus on you. For a moment, you're the most interesting thing in the office.
And then they wait.
Maybe you're about to say something. Maybe you need something. Or maybe you're just standing there awkwardly. If you don't start a conversation, they'll eventually decide you're not going to say anything and get back to work.
But they won't completely forget about you.

We've also made these reactions work while you're moving around the office. When you pass someone in the hallway, you might catch their eyes for a moment before they go back to whatever they were doing.
There's no dialogue trigger or scripted scene behind these moments. It's just the characters reacting to where you are and what they're doing.
It's a small thing, but these little interactions make a surprisingly big difference.
We're trying to make the office feel like a place where people actually have their own lives — not a room full of NPCs patiently waiting for you to press the dialogue button.
