Ravaged by the horrors of the warp and rotting from internal corruption, the Imperium survives not through mercy but through vigilance and fear.
Lurking far beyond the sight and understanding of common citizens, the Inquisition endures as the Emperor’s unseen hand and silent judgement. It moves through the Imperium like a shadow cast across a dying sun, ever watchful, ever listening, its vigilance unceasing. This secretive organisation is divided into the three Major Ordos, each specialising in eradicating a specific kind of existential threat to the Imperium.
Wishlist Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, and brace for a harrowing journey into the shadowy corners of the Imperium, where every choice courts damnation.
Ordo Malleus
Perhaps the most secretive and dangerous branch of the Inquisition, the Ordo Malleus is dedicated to combating the forces of Chaos and the daemonic entities of the warp.
The Ordo Malleus, whose members are known as “Daemonhunter”, was established to confront the corruption of the Chaos Gods and the daemonic legions that serve them. Like all Ordos of the Inquisition, the Ordo Malleus answers to no earthly authority and operates with absolute autonomy, standing as the Imperium's foremost defence against the daemonic and the unknown.
As with Inquisitorial strike forces across the wider Inquisition, those of the Ordo Malleus are intentionally small and precise, typically consisting of a Malleus Inquisitor and a hand-picked retinue of acolytes and Throne agents. When confronted with the most dire threats, the Ordo will often work alongside the formidable Grey Knights, a secretive and incorruptible chapter of Space Marines created for one singular purpose: the utter destruction of daemons wherever they manifest.
Some within the Ordo bear ritual electoos, each a testament to a coven destroyed or a servant of Chaos slain. The eldest may be covered in ancient sigils recording the daemons they have vanquished. Others cloak themselves in black robes and deep hoods, their features hidden in shadow. Yet each bears a grim aspect uniquely their own. The enemy they face is not confined to flesh and steel but seeps into the very essence of existence, a blasphemous contagion that taints the soul, festers in hushed whispers, feeds upon fear, and spreads through even the faintest fragment of forbidden knowledge. For this reason, many members of the Ordo Malleus choose to operate in absolute secrecy. Entire regiments have been quietly erased from Imperial record, and whole worlds consigned to flame, not solely to annihilate daemonic incursions but to ensure that no memory of such abominations endures.
Among the many formidable agents of the Ordo Malleus is Inquisitor Ahmazzi, a relentless servant of the Emperor whose investigations push the limits of authority. In Warhammer 40,0000: Dark Heresy, players will encounter him firsthand, as his actions influence key missions and unfolding events.
Ordo Xenos
The galaxy is not merely hostile, it is infested. Predatory hive fleets descend without warning, while cold, alien intelligences pursue schemes beyond the limits of human comprehension. Against this vast and merciless void, the Ordo Xenos stands sentinel against the alien blight that festers among the stars and wages an unending war of vigilance and extermination.
The Ordo Xenos have dedicated themselves to eradicating the alien menace in all its forms, and its members are often referred to as the “Alien Hunters”. The Ordo Xenos stand watch against threats from both beyond and within the Imperium’s borders. Even among its own ranks, vigilance is crucial, as some radical Inquisitors have been known to consort with xenos, believing they can harness alien knowledge without consequence. Such folly is regarded by many within the Ordo as heresy in all but name. To them, the alien is not merely an enemy but a contagion, one that must be excised without hesitation.
It may watch in silence for years, gathering fragments of truth from ash and shadow, or descend without warning, its judgement falling like a blade from the void. When xenos powers rise to challenge the dominion of Humanity, the Ordo answers, often working alongside the veteran Kill Teams of the Deathwatch Astartes. These warriors, clad in sable power armour and wielding powerful weaponry share a similar goal; the eradication of the xenos threat, at any cost.
A member of the Ordo Xenos, Inquisitor Millicentilia is one of the high-ranking Imperial agents you will encounter in Warhammer 40,0000: Dark Heresy. Dealing with xenos threats, she embodies the Inquisition’s cold vigilance and strategic ruthlessness.
Ordo Hereticus
Few understand better than the Ordo Hereticus just how destructive corruption from within could be. Heresy lies buried in sealed archives and private letters, in the pride of governors and the zeal of preachers who mistake their own voices for divine authority. It grows in shadowed shrines, where forbidden cults claim to interpret the Emperor’s will and in so doing set themselves above it. Where the Ordo Malleus hunts daemons and the Ordo Xenos pursues the alien, the Ordo Hereticus, also referred as “Witch Hunters”, concerns itself with far more insidious foes: traitors, apostates, witches, and seditionists operating within the Imperium itself.
Born in the aftermath of betrayal and religious excess, the Ordo Hereticus exists to discipline the very soul of Humanity, ensuring that devotion to the Emperor remains absolute yet strictly controlled. Like their peers throughout the Inquisition, the agents of the Ordo Hereticus are figures of dread, personifying the Imperium’s uncompromising creed: Humanity survives only through sacrifice, and purity must be enforced without hesitation. In Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, you will encounter one such figure — Leander de Taraal. Assigned to a matter of particular importance, he will accompany you on a special mission on behalf of the Inquisition, one that will lead to several possible outcomes.
One cannot speak of the Ordo Hereticus without mentioning the Adepta Sororitas, the Sisters of Battle, whose ancient pact with the Ordo has endured for millennia, binding both in the unending pursuit of heretics, apostates, and the enemies of the Imperial Creed. Clad in ceramite and fortified by their unwavering faith, they were sanctioned by ecclesiastical will to bring cleansing fire to the condemned.
The three Ordos of the Inquisition represent the relentless vigilance of the Imperium. Each serves as a shield against a distinct form of existential threat: internal heresy, the horrors of daemonic corruption, and the constant danger posed by xenos races. Ruthless in action and absolute in authority, they embody the harsh reality of an age where survival outweighs mercy. Together, the Ordos illustrate both the strength and the moral ambiguity at the heart of Humanity’s eternal war in the grim darkness of the far future.
In Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, you will encounter agents of every Ordo, uncover their doctrines, and experience firsthand the stark differences in how each of them wages its secret war for the Imperium’s survival. From ruthless purges to forbidden investigations, every path reveals another facet of the Inquisition’s relentless struggle against heresy, daemons, and xenos alike.
