How's everyone doing? It's been a while and we hope you're all having a great start to your week! As Summer Game Fest is approaching quickly, we thought that it would be great to get a head start to show off some new features, along with a brand-new character featured in today's MIX Indie Showcase. 👊
Discovering Rivals
Each character selected in Poly Fighter will present uniquely assigned characters that you will have the opportunity to face off against known as Rivals.
There are 3 rivals per character, 1 can be found in each act.
These rivals can only appear in the path when using certain characters. (Some characters will share certain rivals) This means that you'll have to master not just one character, but most of the roster in order to reach these challengers. (Good luck!)
Backstory & Dialog
Right before facing off against a rival, dialog between your character and the rival will take place. We wanted to add personality to our very lively roster by giving every character a backstory, and connection that they have with other fighters. It's up to you to discover your fighter's story, and unwrap their distinguished personality amongst the cast. 👏
We're so excited to see who you all fall in love with, at a first glance... to their playstyle... to finally, their story and personality. We expect your "day 1 favorite characters" tier list, to change drastically overtime. The dev team's favorite picks are constantly changing, and we believe that's a good thing! 😄
Defeating a Rival
Once you defeat a character's rival, you'll be shown a "Character Discovered" screen. There are two big rewards that come from this achievement:
Discovered characters will appear back at the character select screen from now on. This, however, does not mean that they are unlocked just yet. (See our next point for more) They may be there to tease you... or to tempt you to push even further than you expected to in order to play as them.
The discovered character is now released into the pool of Poly Fighter. This means, any character that you select, will now have a chance of finding this character on their path. This also means that when you defeat these characters, you may now obtain their moveset for your fighter.
Unlock Conditions
Back at the character select screen where your newly discovered character is, you'll see that the character is locked. When hovering over one of these discovered fighters, you'll be met with Unlock Conditions or... challenges (if you will). Each character to unlock have a set of 2-3 conditions to complete in order to finally unlock them as a new, and playable fighter.
From not dashing for a single match... to not using any projectiles in a single run... these challenges will sure to keep you busy for quite some time. Don't worry about a loss however, conditions will save the progress that you have made towards them and will not reset when getting a game over unless the condition itself, says otherwise.
Secret & Unlocking Fighters
When playing as the newly unlocked characters, they will present their own set of rivals and secret fighters that are waiting to be challenged, discovered, and later unlocked. This leads us to the "Discovery Loop" shown on today's Summer Game MIX Showcase.
Step 1. Select a Fighter
Step 2. Find & Challenge a Rival
Step 3. Win, and Discover the Character
Step 4. Return to the character select screen, and view their Unlock Conditions.
Step 5. Complete the Unlock Conditions, and Unlock the New Fighter!
Step 6. Select your new fighter, and find new rivals!
Repeat.
Muscle Horse
During the MIX Showcase, we introduced our beloved Muscle Horse to the world! 🐴
Muscle Horse was a quiet, shy and awkward kid who always hid behind a mask. Training his body and mind has given him the control needed to feel comfortable in society. Though he still feels shy when looked at... he fights against his feelings by making "Muscle Horse" his identity.
He has become loud, theatrical and is always posing for the camera. He has created the idea that everyone thinks that he is breathtaking, and is magnificent which.. can come off hilarious at times.
Behind all the fame, and power that he has built behind the body, he just wants to be validated and accepted for who he is behind that mask. Hopefully, you can be that person to give him the validation that he seeks...
Coming Soon!
The replay value of Poly Fighter is ever growing, providing you all with a quality filled experience that holds tons to do for a very long time. We want players to be challenged, but to also feel accomplished when discovering secret fighters, and mastering challenges just to unlock them.
We're excited to see how many unique movesets can be constructed, what power can be displayed, and the dedication that it took to find every little secret at every corner.
We appreciate you all for supporting the development of Poly Fighter, as we continue to work hard every day to bring you the special single-player roguelike fighting game to call your own! See you soon!
